I found that by holding the remote against the windscreen where instrument cluster is will arm/disarm the car.

Can someone give it a go next time and see if it works for them?

I assume the box is behind the dash somewhere?

Perhaps, but ideally a very good & experienced installer will hide it so good behind your dash or even somewhere else in the cabin that it'll take hours to find it unless he tells you where it is.
