Hi All,

My brake pads are just about Fubar, so its time to upgrade!

Now, i was thinking, seeing as i do some sprint/circuit stuff, and intend to do some more this year, i would like something that brakes well...

I'm looking at getting:

Standard Size DBA4000 Slotted Rotors for the front

Machine Standard Rear Rotors

Ferodo DS2500 Pads on both Front and Rear

Brake Master Cylinder Stopper

i already run fresh Motul RBF600 Fluid in the lines, so i don't think i'll need to do anything there...

*If needed* possibly a caliper rebuild...

what are your thoughts on this combo? yes? no?

Anything else i should look at that isn't going to break the bank?

The brakes on the 33s arnt that bad. With just pads and some decent fluid and master cylinder brace mine has stood up to a summer track day @ wakefield and pulled up time and time again.

So i think that a rotor + pad + mcb + the fluid you will have a decent combo indeed.

Imo the brace works wonders

pretty sure a 324 will require a 17" wheel.

a rotor upgrade will be heaps better than the 280mm because braking is a function of

1 - torque that is applied to the rotor (increased rotor diameter, higher torque)

2 - rotor's ability to dissapate the heat (larger rotor, more mass, more heat capacity)

3 - caliper itself and ability to consistently provide an even force across the face of the pad

consider that the factory 4 pot nissan caliper is a pretty good thing, just that the rotors are a bit small for dissapating track heat. go the 324s and you will find that you might not even need a caliper upgrade. what may be of worth is a caliper rebuild kit (all the rubber seals) and a bit of time to rebuild the factory caliper... don't think the seal kit would be more than $150 at a guess?

Yeh, need 17" wheels, and sure using the std caliper on a 324mm rotor may not be as good as running an AP 4 pot, or even a Brembo, but you also have the $1600 in your pocket for other things....and i have found it to work quite well for me the past 5 or so years.

Im actually about to attemptto run a 340x32mm rotor with a tsd R32 GTR caliper...so will see how that goes. Got the rotors foe a reasonable price so figure its worth a try...worst case i may have to hunt down some new calipers if it doesnt work as well as the 324mm rotors...but thats ok as at least i will have the rotors and hats and mods are always easier when you can have small bites at them :)

You may not necessarily want/need to run the DS2500's on the rear. I have seen a lot of people run 2500 front & 2000 rear. That way you get a less aggressive pad on the back end & never have to worry about getting temperature into the rear.

Also would be worth looking at getting some braided lines for the front end to held banish the muchy brake pedal that Skylines can have.

You can have a look at mine Tuesday at the track day if you want as I am running what you are thinking of getting -

DBA 4000 slotted rotors up front

Brake master cylinder stopper

Motul RF 600 fluid

But I am running the Hawke pads front and rear, I had them on my GTR and rate them very highly.

My next thing will definately be braided brake lines as the pedal feel isn't that flash atm. . . .

I'd add braided lines to your list at only $50 a corner done on car if you want, You can't go wrong!

I'd also go the same as JL newton and have hawke pads all round

But as it always comes down to Jas, it's your money

Sounds like a good list otherwise. :(

so you can run GTR rotors with the GTST calipers can you?

Bolt straight on no worries?

Im looking at upgrading my brakes and was going to get the DBA 4000 and get some Bendix Metal pads and a cylinder stopper.

If so and its easy i might look into getting GTR DBA4000 rotors for it and motul fluid etc.

Also what is the advantage of having braided brake lines apart from the obvious being strong?

The idea of the braided lines is to eliminate line expansion. When the old rubber lines expand you get a poor pedal response...the s/s braided lines which are teflon lined can handle the pressure and dont expand...increases your pedal feel and response. Its a definete for track work if you do it often.

Where are you getting the Standard Size DBA4000 Slotted rotars from??? ....And what would I expect to pay for all four?

....I'd like to get some for my car :)

EDIT: Just realised ur in Brissie(im in melb)... Would I be able to get them from say a REPCO or something like that?

no, to run a GTR rotor you'll need an adapter bracket to use a GTSt caliper

in fact i think GTR rotors are 32mm vs 30mm thick for GTSt so might not be able to use a GTR rotor with GTSt caliper at all...?

Ask Roy :ermm:

I think it is possible, there are kits being developed for it at the moment

Yeh they are good value, but I tend to think the upgrade best suits R32 GTST. The 296mm to 324mm upgrade only represents a 28mm increase in diameter, which is 14mm in radius, so the bracket to offset the calliper is difficult to do properly as you end up with such a small bit of steel/alloy with 4 big 10-11mm holes in it 

I think the NS person is also the same person doing these kits in the Group Buy section of SAU. IT will be interesting to see if ppl start running them and get the same results as I have…but Im just paranoid that the bracket isn’t strong enough. On the other had the 280 to 324mm upgrade is 22mm radius change and much more meat in the bracket…so, who knows

Hi everyone

I got some rims that were the wrong offset (i live in Broome WA, no good rim wheel shops, and prices are ridiculous anyway) and grinded a bit off the calipers to make them fit, but ive got some new calipers on the way, and was thinking of doing the GTR 324mm x 30mm DBA4000 slotted rotor upgrade.

Roy - where did you get the brackets from for your conversion? As this is the only part i will now need so i can get the clearance i require.

cheers

Evil

BTW sorry for the post hijack :)

    • Out here E90s are the cheapest way into a sporty-ish car because everyone knows just how expensive the repairs can get. 8-10k USD for an automatic 335i.
    • Noted. Have noticed BMW are more 'high maintenance' for sure. They've attracted my attention as I think the used car prices seem reasonable vs other options, and the extra quality overall vs a commodore / camry / corolla or similar of the same vintage is appealing, especially the interior, and they are more on the sporty side whereas the others mentioned can be more cruising or economical A-to-B only.
    • Haha yeah I know, this is SAU after all, why are we talking about BMW's of all things!? I hear you on the 'don't have to worry about it' side of things. Having been fortunate enough to be have been able to buy a brand new motorbike or two...never really enjoyed them as much as I'd have liked as you worry so much about where you park it, will it get scratched, stolen, attempted theft, knocked over, etc...and yes dirty. Older less valuable bikes you can just go where you want and park it wherever and not really worry that much in comparison. And who cares if it gets dirty! Never owned a V8, and have had my eyes on VE / VF commodores for years but with their prices climbing so high, the M3 has come into focus more as prices are much closer than I've ever seen...is it a potential contender now?...of course need to factor in the S65 'maintenance' especially and like you said general M car 'tax'. One can dream anyway. But more on the reality front - did read the whole 330i thread as well and was a great read too, both threads enlightening as I've never even driven one of these cars! I do recall 330i didn't seem to have the same amount of issues for almost the same car (turbos and related differences notwithstanding)...perhaps down to getting it earlier in it's life so looked after better than the 335i? Perhaps so as your 130i has been good and quite similar, so finding a car that's been looked after well is the especially-crucial-BMW-first-step.
    • Nice. Dont worry about the time of not running. My current skyline hasn't run since I bought it. About 8 years ago.
    • It's also worth noting that I am heavily and unconditionally biased. I've had a lot of cars including some GTRs a fair while ago. I love my BMW's now a lot. They make no sense a lot of the time and the guys on here remind me regularly that I could get something else that does what I want better and cheaper. If you're going to take on an older BMW it's definitely a commitment. If you bail on it early you'll lose money and also the ability for it to put a smile on your face. Stick with it and it just gets better.  f**k I should get into advertising.
