Had a run with one about a month ago...did pretty well considering my car is 'mainly' all stock (except BMG filter, 10psi).

He whooped me on take off, but when boost came on, it was all over...as the fat lady said waving her wooden leg in the air...

Was right on his bumper - he couldn't get away, and I couldn't gain - plain even except for launch.

The car suffers from poor ecu management, small and badly placed intercooler and silicon/rubber pipes from the intercooler to the turbo. The latest, issue 29, HPI has a write-up on it. Just like any turbo car, a front mount intercooler with better pipes and new ecu would see huge gains. The turbo only runs 5psi stock, the stock r33 turbo runs 7psi stock.

I also remember reading somewhere that the EMS has data logging and any discreprencies in boost, power, a/f ratio etc will be recorded and may void warranty.

I also read in "autospeed" that the gearbox is fairly weak and may be prone to breaking with any serious mods. Apparently, the auto gearbox is stronger.

Anyway, I doubt that the Ford engineers would too keen to let the XR6 turbo outperform the XR8 which is rated at 260kW and 500Nm.

True Kichigai,

they don't want the 240kw to outperform the 260 kw V8 so they have made strict rules.... you touch the turbo you lose our warranty and our love:uh-huh: but yeah as mentioend they can be wound up a bit and outperfrom the v8 which is what i like to hear... however still carting around HUGE amount of weight!

Skyzer:.... happily pulled over 281 at the rears last thursday.... still using standard clutch!! ahahaha!! Brett recons that it is amazing that standard clutch has last this long but new one is needed I am takeing off at lights like a grandma at the moment, .... soooo next thursday 9 puck going in.... PLUS ITC STILL NOT BLOODY INSTALLED!!! so looks like will be going higher.... Ummm still a few more other things going on... i don't want to really post figures till we have finished kinda keepinh a bit hush hushish for auto salon not everything i wanted done will be finished in time though which i am upset about but oh well...... PM me :-)

oh can you guys please let me know limitations of fuel pump, injectors, standard turbo.......

probably going for the malpassi fuel regulator however have heard good and bad things about this... I think Killer T have probs with this?

Check out the weight on the GT  Sure, its got 290kW, but it needs every last one of them to keep pace with the similar priced, lower powered HSV. Don't know how they compare handling wise, but I can't imagine that kind of wieght doing it any favours. I was excited about the Fords new performance cars - until the weight issue reared its ugly head.

Although newer models tend to put on weight, it needn't be that way at all. Look at the 350Z, at 1440kg its a clean 50kg less than the 300zx. (14.5@159km/h for the 350z if anyones interested).

According to the article in "carpoint" the FPV GT was aimed at the HSV Clubsport & R8. Although the Ford has more power, it needed it to compensate for the extra weight. They mentioned that it handled better than the Holden due to the Blade IRS, but it suffered from a lack of LSD (I think).

Ford wants to leave room for the GTP and GTO in the future which would target the HSV GTS.

From what I've read, the GT does absorb bumps better than the Clubby but its steering is lighter and doesn't offer as much feel for the road. Which is really saying something considering that even with all the improvements the VY brought to steering, I found the Clubbie to be not as direct or "involving" as your garden variety R33. All of Fords and Holdens recent performance cars have LSDs, btw.

I don't think the GT is up to competing with the Clubsport in serious driving. Standard brakes on the GT are 325mm twin pistons vs the Clubbies 330mm twins, which means slightly less braking torque on a heavier car. Upgraded GT brakes ($6k option) are an improvemnt, 355mm Brembos (+ braided lines) vs 343mm 4 pot on the Clubsport R8.

I'm sure the GT would make a nice cruiser for an elderly gentleman (or woman). But I don't buy cars to cruise.

I had the opportunity of taking one for a test drive around northbridge (so I couldn't fully open it up) and the dealer wouldn't let me take off the traction control.

I was quite impressed.

As already said it runs at low boost and has a small cooler. Any modification whatsoever will void the warranty. Ford are a bit concerned about the gear box not holding up to much more boost.

But let the xr6 mature- it could turn out to be a true monster. Once the warranty run out watch as people do the same things to them as get done to skylines and vl turbos, cooler, boost etc.

ps. the rumour is that all ford testing was done at 270kw and then it was engineered back to 240 to preserve the warranty- but the point is it is good to go at 270 as is.

the weight will be a big problem and dont see how they will get around it. People buying an xr6 apparantley want all the fruit- half a cow, arctic a/c etc.

Should be interesting to see if holden try and keep up by putting a huffer on the new v6 comming out of fishermans bend in a couple of years. supposed to be a very nice mill.

And after all this would not be holdens first flirt with a turbo commodore. All hail the vl!
