'86 R31 Gx Skyline Speedo Problem

I need some ideas on what could be causing the speedo to not work when I'm driving. I have seen it flick a few times but most of the time it just sits on 0. Also, the fuel and battery gauges don't work.

Can a complete car noob fix it or would it be best to get a mechanic to look at it?

I'm also fully aware it's illegal to drive without a working speedo. But you won't tell will you?

Could be the gauge, they are pretty shithouse, try and find a cheap one to test.

Or the wires for the speedo sender on the gearbox have broken, happened on a couple of 31s I know of, but not massively common. Have a look on the drivers side near the gearbox crossmember, there ill be 3 wires on a plug, check them out.

replacing either isn't too hard, only basic tools required.

It will be the gauges, get a new dash cluster from a wrecker, cheapest way to fix the issue.

seriously the connections on all the gauges wear out, tacho volts and fuel level gauges never work until I give the cluster a good thumping

check obvious things first like if your speedo drive is plugged in.
