Hi,

I have a R32 with a RB20DET and I want to raise the boost.

Im buying a boost controller and I was wondering how high could i raise the boost? I was hoping that I could raise the boost a bit without buying more parts.

Will I need a bigger fuel pump and other parts or can i just raise the boost??

Any Help would be Great!

It has:

R34 Turbo (running 7psi, stock boost)

3 inch excust system

Front Mount Intercooler

K&N Air Filter

Lighten Flywheel

Dear Matt,

Firstly, look up Cubez on the members search. He is a expert on the R32. I would suggest the R33 High Flow as it makes a huge difference and to get a electronic boost controller as it holds boost much longer. You can just wind it up yourself and the good thing is these turbo's are cheap at $600 so it is a good risk. Just dont go over the 12 pound mark. But truth being, a dyno tune would really hit the spot and make it all worthwhile.

You definitely need a fuel pump before that. I got a Walbro on mine and picked it up for only about $200. It worked wonders and is alot cheaper than a Bosch 0.40. PM me if you want more info

will i need a fuel pump? yes

how high can i raise the boost (safely)? 12-14psi is ok with that turbo on an rb20

what other parts will i need? a boost controller. the fact that you already have full exhaust / FMIC is great and this is the enxt logical step of modification

I ran 16psi on mine constantly without a fault, but i could have been lucky...

From memory (which is far from faultless), you should be able to get 200+rwkw from the stock injectors. Even if it was within your fuel pump's limits, i'd get a new one cos the extra stress on the probably 10+yr old pump might end its life prematurely.

The 2 best mods i made on mine were the S2 RB25 turbo, and possibly the best, a chipped ecu afterwards. Its a pretty good street combo after.. Nice power, and hardly any, if any more lag than stock. Good luck!

Changing fuels pumps doesn't affect anything except it's ability to give more fuel up high with more boost.

That said I put a walbro in once and the pressure increased dramatically at low revs making it run too rich. A second hand GTR pump fixed that and is a good cheap upgrade for you too.

Bosch pump will be harder to fit than the GTR pump but one would expect it to be more reliable than an old GTR pump. With the level of mods you have you would benifort greatly from an ECU tune this will iron out any problems the new pump may cause.

Id leave it at 1bar if your someone who wants occasional drags and doesn't drive the car hard all day everyday. If you are abit like that try 12psi as the turbo will last longer.

    • Exhaust end of this month, and then tune after that whenever there is availability. Still tossing up between a pure 98 tune or a flex 98/e85 combo.  The (lack of) milage in e85 isnt great. Start to get anxiety if i go for a long drive and there arent any united servo's nearby
    • I mean I can be OCD'y but this is really over the top. At that point why not just run a full wideband fuel controller? Especially if you run 3 widebands. The system works pretty well, which is trimming low load stuff to be within a few percent of the base map. Pre-engine _change_ the base map was only 1-2% off, depending on ambient temp, elevation, etc. Under load the LS is really very straightforward to tune, enough that a wideband closed loop would be overkill. If I really cared (and I hope I don't) I can always just go back to the MAF system the car actually came with. Which does all those nice calculations for me (temp, altitude, etc), now that you can buy 102mm MAF's that do not cause restrictions.

    • I'd be installing 2x widebands and using the NB simulation outputs to the ECU.
    • Nah, it's different across different engines and as the years went on. R32 era RB20, and hence also RB26, the TPS SWITCH is the idle command. The variable resistor is only for the TCU, as you say. On R33 era RB25 and onwards (but probably not RB26, as they still used the same basic ECU from the R32 era), the idle command is a voltage output of close to 0.45V from the variable resistor.
