depends on how heavy modifications you have... This is from my experience others may encounter different things, the guidelines to what can be permitted what cannot be permitted is quite vague, also depends on connections. I’ve heard ppl not allowed to have Tein suspension, however when a certain mechanics (connection) brought the same car to the pit, he managed to get the permit.

three methods of obtaining permit

-you get a yellow sticker, went to pits and pits will remove the sticker provided your mods are allowable. They will then ask you to pay something like $35 for a permit

- you can go get the permit straight at the pit without getting the yellow sticker at your own risk, because if your tyres are bald or your horn are not working etc, etc...you may get a yellow sticker for trying to get the permit, the pits more often are more lenient in this case, they will only give warnings but not actually issue yellow sticker, I think they trying to encourage ppl to obtain a permit

-last one, a more tedious and usually done for more extreme modification. Write down a wish list, of the modifications you wanted to perform. The form for this is available in licensing centre just asks for it. The road authorities will decide if your modification is safe or not. If it is, you have to go to a road authority recognized mechanics for your modifications to be tested. I’m not really sure what happened after I haven’t got a permit this way before….but I think it’s relatively expensive….

The carbon fiber bonnet is legal for cars produced prior to 1993. The Carbon fiber bonnet ban was introduced after 1993. Therefore later models of R33 and R34s are not allowed to have carbon fiber bonnets.

Same with BOV, the pits have stopped giving out permits for BOV when they realized that the loudness of some BOV can be adjusted + BOV volume is dependent on pressure as well, higher boost you have, louder BOV is…

Alloy wing have to stay within the body of the car itself, no part of the wing may protrude the car body. The radials of the spoiler cannot be sharp. Also make sure the permit describe specifically the type of spoiler you have on. I’ve got a full carbon fiber spoiler including the radial portion however the permit states carbon fiber spoiler (black plastic radial). Cops pulled me over and they suspected I changed the spoiler.

Parts which came standard with the car are generally allowed, therefore keep as much as possible the Japanese writings on your engine bay as they make the parts look authentic.

Tinting is allowed up to a certain grade, your tint shop will tell you what is legal and what is not.

The body kit in general are legal, however there is a minimum allowable height all around the body kit (body kit copies tends to differ in depth). The cop car when they pull you over the one with bright orange checkers will have with them a measuring tape to measure the height of body kit leaving the ground.

Front mount intercooler are legal as long as they do not have the NOS kit or water spray sytem.

These are all I can confirm

The others I am not sure. I have heard ppl saying that exhaust are not allowed to be modified due to emission problem, unless you can prove that the exhaust is still within the limits

I haven’t heard anything about vertical doors, it cost $900 to get a duplicate not much ppl are keen…

getting a permit does not stop you from being sent to the pit. they will just find somethingto blame....I have a yellow sticker on atm, the cops saying my suspensions are too stiff. It's a factory suspension......and the pit don't issue permit for stock standard parts....so there you go a loop hole...

in to the pit $35 poorer, pits refuse to issue permit but your car is legal..back on street caught again $35 back to pit again...and the cycles continue once a year every winter around the auto salon season~~

they wont issue permits for things you are allowed to have either.

ie, strut braces are now on the 'allowed to have' list.

when i got my yellow sticker, he noted down the suspension was too stiff. (teins, which ill admit are too stiff formy liking)

they passed over the pits like it was factory. but i didnt want to ask for a permit just then, incase he didnt pass them!

and he also noted down my BOV was too loud.

its a stock BOV, plumbed back, so again, it wont be permitted.

it all ultimately depends on who you see at the pits.

the pits and the police surprisingly dont have much to do with eachother, its a bad system.

i have relations in the traffic police dept, and they were telling me the pits will tell them one thing, but the actual law is another.

carbon fibre is a common one.

the police are told *all* carbon bonnets are illegal.

so they slap a dpi racing sticker on your 1992 r32 with a carbon bonnet.

you take it to the pits and it gets removed because its legal.

then you go and rant on why this cop is a wanker, because he lickied you legal car.

unfortunately there will be discrepencies.

but when you buy this kind of car, you should know the connotations that go with it.

alot of it is attitude based too.

if you do what your told, and even if they are in the wrong, bite your tongue, you might just come out alright.

Mitchy is 100% right...when I got a yellow for height, the guy at the pits (east perth) listed a heap of things i needed permits for, including BOV, strut brace, pod filter. Failed for still being too low...and an apparent locked diff. So went to pits again (welshpool) and they guy there laughed and basically called the east perth guy an idiot for listing some of the things needing a permit, like the pod and strut brace, but still gave me permits for them, and the diff passed fine.

The BOV was totally atmo (Greddy Type S) and I got a permit for that too :D although at the moment there isn't one on there at all since the power upgrade

Cheers,

JB

Jason - yeah, its unfortunate, but different pits have different opinions too, and then at those pits, different inspectors have different opinions too. ie. my exhaust sits about 10mm off my rear bumper, and legally it should sit 25mm from all parts of the vehicle. one inspector listed it on my work order, and the next one ticked it off without even measuring.

hell, it comes down to if that inspector got any last night or not either :D

Flash89 - what did you get a yellow for?

its a pain in the ass when they write down 'check bov', or 'check height'.

what they should be doing, is saying 'ride hieght is 92mm, needs to be raised' or 'bov is making noise, to be made silent'.

ok, generally you know if something is illegal or not, but if they just write down 'check ***' people will just change it, take it over the pits claiming the cop was a tosser, and swap it 15 mins after they get the yellow removed.

however, dont be fooled.

even with a permit, they can still give you a yellow sticker..

my car has a permit for the 'induction system' which consisted of a AFM-less pod filter, and a ARC fmic.

on the permit it just says 'induction system (pod filter and front mount intercooler'.

since that permit was issued almost 3 years ago, ive changed the pod to one which now has an AFM bolted onto it, and the intercooler has changed to a bigger intercooler, with different piping.

now if the cops have reason to believe the mods are different from the permit (ie, youve changed it) or if they seem to be dangerous in some way, they can give you a yellow.

ive seen people with permits for pod filters, and get a yellow sticker because their pod filter wasnt properly secured.

best bet is to see old Reno @ welshpool pits he is the most knowledgable about permitsand any modifications u may want in the future

he passed mine no probs with 17x 9 rims which are illegal coz you are only allowed a maximum rim width of 8 inches

I'm sure I read somewhere an exception to that rule. From the factory wheel specs, you are legally allowed to increase the size (width or diameter) by 2". Therefore, 9" wide on a 32R is legal because they came out with 8" :)

Agree that welshpool is good though! The inspector that saw my car for registration last year only failed it because the exhaust scraped really bad and the other inspectors were standing infront of their pits ready for the first cars of the morning, and they just turned and looked lol! He said he didn't like failing cars like ours because they are good cars, and a nice change from the *quote* " pieces of sh!t we get in here every day"

as per http://www.dpi.wa.gov.au

Alternative road wheels

Alternative road wheels are permitted under the following conditions :

Rim width must not exceed the maximum rim width specified by the manufacturer by more than 25mm (1") (for passenger vehicles manufactured after 1st January 1973, the manufacturers rim width shall be taken as that specified on the tyre placard).

In any event, rim width shall not exceed 177.8 mm (7") unless specified by the manufacturer as standard equipment for the vehicle in question. "No increase in rim width is permitted for vehicles fitted with original equipment rims in excess of 177.8 mm (7") width."

this means we still can not go wider that what is the original width of the rim eg r32 gtr is 16 x 8 factory we can legally put a 17 x 8 but nothing wider

correct.

you can go up 2" in diameter, but only up to 7" wide, unless wider was a factory *option*.

(ie, if a gts-t came with 16x7" standard, but there was an option for 17x8", you can have up to 19x8")

the above wasnt a option, merely a example.

like a set of teins, or D2's or something

ie..

d2shocks.jpg

i think D2's are something about $1200 now?

(correct me if im wrong)

and will be alot better than just springs and stock shocks.

gives you height adjustabilty too. (and possibly damper, again not sure with the D2's)

    • A little follow up here on the ceramic coating.  We've had storms galore here and I've done a few ks, enough to gross them up  Consensus is that they didn't get as dirty as usual, the coating definitely repelled a little of the dirt and I think they kinda snowball. They get a little dirty and then they get dirty faster which makes sense. Cleaning them regularly would allow them to protect better.  Cleaning was a breeze. I tried first to just hose them off which, unsurprisingly, did nothing. But, making the wheels wet and then just wiping them over with a used but clean microfibre cloth was all that was required. I didn't need any cleaner at all, just water and a cloth. The wheels look amazing again.
