For the first time today, the fuel gauge has started playing up on me.

Got in the car this morning, it was full.

after work driving home it was halfway, then started to rise againe, then drop, then went to empty, then raise again to what it should be.

Why would this happen? problem with the float or a one of thos things.

Mine does the same. Please let me know what u do to fix it.

The problem has stopped.

I think if your over fill past full (if that makes sense) will make the float in the tank give innacurate readings until you burn a little petrol.

Nah, i've seen it happen on many occassions. Do you park on an incline by any chance?

my parkings flat.

any possibility it could be your gauge? bad connection? this could be a good oppurtunity to see if someone has tampered behind your gauges, but i could imagine it would be a pain to get behind there anyway.

sorry i cant help further mate.

Mine is like that ALL the time. I can do 100kms without it moving, then it drops slowly, then from half way down it drops much quicker. It will then proceed to go from below the E to ebove, then below and repeat until the car konks out with no fuel (learnt the hard way). So yeah, must be a dodgy sensor or something. I just make sure i fill it when the car approaches doing 300kms, usually takes about 46l or so. But even if i forget how many kms i have gotten used to it to know when to fill. Definitely annoying though.

I have this same problem in my 33 GTR, when i start it up its on 1/2 which was what it should be. The 1 minute down the road it will go down to empty, then up to a quarter, then to empty, then to just under 1/2 again. The needle moves fairly slowly, probably 30 seconds to move from 1/2 to empty.

I was wondering if this was a problem for all Skylines?

Does anyone know if it is caused mainly by a faulty sender in the tank, bad wire connection, faulty instrument cluster? Any help would be appreciated.

Cheers

yeah same problem. fill it up past full and it'll take awhile of driving before it goes down, usually to halfway, then after halfway you just gotta judge as it moves up and down a fair bit, when it gets to just under the quarter line i know i have to fill up lol.

I had a problem where the fuel would stay on full for 100km or more, then go up and down getting lower quickly until around empty.

FIXED IT!

The problem was found when I replaced my fuel pump, The float sensor thingy had come off it's mounting clips (next to the fuel pump) and was floating around the tank, then coming to rest on the floor of the tank when empty.

I slid it back onto it's clips and so far, so good.

You have to access the inside of the tank frombehind the back seat. Look at the how "how to change a fuel pump"thread for instructions on how to do it.
