um looking at dyno figures and stuff and noticed that most rb20det owners, with basic mods, seem to claim about 130 kilowatts. I read that the rb20det red top has 135 kw and the silver top has 165 kw. Is this true? Or if some one has the correct figures post them quickly for me, i need the figures to know how much i can do to the car before i no longer can modify it on my P-Plates

ahh ok thanks, so im right to assume that the silver tops come with around 165 kilowatts?

Stupid P-plate restrictions, allow 125 kilowatts per tonne and if that engine is 165 kilowats then that leaves the car at 124 kilowatts per tonne. Not a huge amount of space to operate with. Got exhaust boost and pod so im probably already over it, zzz

Nah i think the P-Plate restrictions are only about the amount of output of a stock version of the car. Someone correct me if im wrong tho.

??? Here in qld we dont have to worry about such laws... A 17 year old P plater can own a heavily modified GTR if his/her parents pockets are deep enough...

And yes the silver top is rated in the 160kw area...

Consider yourself corrected.

If you modify a vehicle so it exceeds the limits, then it has the same effect as if the vehicle were manufactured that way.

You can't fit a RB26DETT to a R32 GTSt and claim the "factory" figure is within the limits. You can't fit a LS1 into a HG Holden, and claim the "factory" figure is within the limits.

Obviously engine swaps are a different kettle of fish but if the factory fitted engine is in the car and the power/weight ratio is acceptable then you are legally able to drive the car, obviously.

But then modifying the engine would in theory exceed the power to weight ratio above P plate limits deeming it illegal.

But the authorities are only going to look at the model of car and make a P plate legal decision based on that. Dont worry about them asuming the power/weight ratio has increased with the mods, they are not going to make you prove the power output. They have many other fines for the mods alone regardless of being a p plater or not.

yeh thats true, (vicroads site says 125/1tonne, also 1 tonne per 3 litres) Most of the mods im planning wont be readily recognizable i suppose. Recently theyve had coppers out on the town satday nights (lygon street, chapel street, melbourne), canarying like crazy, for all sorts of suspension, body and other modifications as well as no Cat's, some intake mods, to loud a exhaust and having a BOV set up wrong (venting to atmosphere i assume) I hope they dont teach cops much more about cars.

I said a stock version of a car. Keyword here is stock. It has the same engine that came from factory - i never said anything about doing an engine swap, and neither did the guy asking questions in this thread.

You said "the restrictions only apply to the stock version of the car". So, my initial comment still applies - if you modify the factory engine so it exceeds the limits, then it has the same effect as if the vehicle was manufactured that way. (perhaps there should have been an "and" at the start of the 3rd paragraph)

Obviously, if you are modifying the RB20DET, then it will be harder to detect, but the rules are still applicable.

restrictions apply to a car based on its stock tare weight and stock flywheel output (this is for victoria anyway)

modifying the car to either increase its output or decrease its output does not change whether its acceptible or not

eg buying a R32 GTR and jammign the wastegate open does not make it legal to drive

eg buying a R32 GTSt and modifying it to make 150rwkw does not make iot illegal

changing the engine however inroduces a new engine and a new stock flywheel output.

there is heaps more info around. do a search

Exactly my point, how the hell are they gonna know if you've done the internals of your engine? Make you go for a dyno run and get back to them with the results. I think not.

I'd say a lot of cops really wont give a shit about the new rules as long as you dont go too nuts with mods.

It's not as if there are not already techniques to keep a gate fully closed under boost. After all, you have boost. Just use a wastegate actuator that will allow you to apply the boost on the appropriate side, just like every external gate out there.
    • Heres another fitment photo. redrilled the pattern to 5x112, and threw my audi´s rims on. had to touch the upper control arms with grinder, because the "sharp corner" was sticking about 2-3mm on the tire path. i have the "fender lip" mostly cut off, otherwise these (too) would contact with it. 20x9.5 ET25 rear    265/30 20x8.5 ET20 front    255/30 they are temporary, and look too big for the chassis. searching for 19s to it.
    • From experience, it will come back to bite you haha.
    • Background: my BMW 225i hatchback (rebodied MINI/X1) came with 3x RE003 and 1x Goodyear Asymmetric something. The RE003 roared and slid around, the Goodyear side was quiet and grippy. Definitely my car was thrashed before it got sent to dealers. My brother also got RE003 all round on his old VA WRX STI, I wasn't impressed with them, car was loud so can't comment on noise. Anyway, Hankook stopped making/updating V12 Evo2. So bought S1 Evo3 runflats. Great daily duties tyre and not that harsh ride. Tyre reviews site/youtube rated them as best stopping in the rain and I believe them. Next set, Goodyear Asymmetric 5 non-RFT. It beat PS4 in tests and is like $100 cheaper, so put them on. Great tyre, more grip then S1 Evo3 but a tad noisier as expected, still rocking them. Next set I am looking to go runflats, probably the new Hankook Evo. Although the new Pirelli PZ5 did well in tyrereviews test. Or go Goodyear Asymmetric 6 which was top tyre last year. The V12 Evo2 on my gen5 Liberty GT wagon did great in cold condition (drove to snowy mountains for a day so my husky can feel his ancestor's roots). Super impressive performance for $120 each lol. Never skimp on tyres, brakes, suspension. There's old pics of my R31's crappy random brake pads bending in the caliper at Oran Park track day somewhere around here. Anyway, my 2 cents.
