Hey Guys,

I've been searching for the answer to this for a while and i havent been able to find anything.

Does anyone know the original cylinder compression when an R33 RB25DET engine is first built. I want to compare my engines current cylinder compression to what it came with from factory.

I guess it could be in an engine manual or something which i dont have access to.... or possibly locked in SK's brain waiting to be revealed? :cheers:

Its not a good idea to rely on the compression figure, it can vary depending on the gauge, battery, starter( crank speed) and the way its done ( cold, hot, WOT). To your surprise it could even be highet on a healthy old angine because of carbon built up. The factory pressure is 12.2 kg/cm2 for a turbo RB25.

A leakdown test will be more accurate indication of the condition of the engine .

sounds like your motor is rooted. Time for Forgies, rods, and a bigger turbo :rofl:

Low PSI on cylinder 6 is common for a stuffed RB25.

I tested mine at 90,000km, and tested properly, was 169psi accross all cyclinders, and 2% leakdown.

Hope its still like that lol

yeah, motor is rooted.

do the test again, record the results

then squirt a couple of squirts of oil through the spark plug hole, if the compression increases, then it's your piston rings, if it doesn't then it's head gasket or valves

make sure the engine is warm, all spark plugs are removed, fuel pump is disabled, and using wide-open-throttle when doing the test.

getting a leakdown test done by a mechanic can pin point exactly where the cylinder is leaking from, not sure how to do them, i think you need special equipment.

how do you do a leak down test?

Very easy , while you have the plugs out to do a compression test, you do a leakdown test as well.

All you need is the leakdown tester and a compressed air supply.

You can usualy hear if you have any amount of leak where its leaking from, valves or bottom end .

mate my dads an engineer for holden, so im pretty sure he did the tests correctly..lol but thanx for sharing the info, some people were bound to ask how to do it!! :woot:

      I was actually being a tightarse at the time LOL... My OCD is tickling me into running a 2nd 8AN Teflon hose all the way down and removing the 2x OEM hardlines. My other side of my brain is telling me to run 2x hardlines front to back (also acts as a fuel cooler, so win win).

      As I mentioned in an earlier post, I had some trouble with the Silvia's brakes dragging back in 2023. I managed to sort it out then, but the same problem came back to bite me late last year. Just take a look at the picture – I had a feeling the handbrake was acting up again, and I was right. Anyway, I'd been wanting to upgrade to bigger brakes for a while. Not that the Silvia's brakes were bad, but it was more of a "want" than a "need", you know? It was funny, though – at the time, I couldn't find any Evo Brembos, 350Z Brembos, or GTR Brembos for a decent price (of course, tons of them popped up online after I already bought my kit!). I ended up going with an F50 Brembo kit, which came with adapters, brake lines, 330mm rotors, and top hats. The F50 Brembo caliper was used in a few other cars too, like the FPV. I also decided this was the perfect opportunity to ditch the Silvia's ridiculous rear brakes and that awful handbrake (some of you were definitely right about that!). I picked up some R33 calipers and all the necessary bits – rear drums, backing plates, and new hardware to refurbish the calipers. Of course, it wouldn't be a project without a few hiccups. Turns out the brake master cylinder was playing up and basically (to put it simply) keeping the brakes engaged. I had it overhauled, and after some adjustments, everything was working again. The whole process took a while, as you can imagine. To top it off, the front right wheel bearings were shot and needed replacing too. This is a rare occasion where I'm posting an update while it's all still fresh! These pictures were taken just this afternoon.

      I was just going to say that it's good to see you picking up the pace again. Hope the surgery goes well. More downtime just means more time to come up with new ways of digging a deeper rabbithole

      How do they compare in size? I have the Yaris coil packs in mine and they work fine. But they are either bigger or sit differently so the engine cover doesn't fit anymore. Not the end of the world but not great either. Do the R35 ones sit flush?
