Wanted: R33 Gtr - Sorted Out

ASX-hoon... everyone else has cleaned up their verbage, except you. I'd offer you up bank details on my last x-fer to prove you can get exchange rates better than posted... but you're just not a nice guy. $100K+ you can get a significant increase, $10K+ some; no, not alot of money for a mid-6-figure earner, O&G industry.

This will be my last post responding to you unless you "get nice"... have the last word if that's your thing.

I think you better start selling currency here, i can get you a few customers if you think you can do better than the banks/ foreign currency dealers. You will make a killing and then you may even be able to afford that "well sorted 33".

As for me "get nice", i will but only when you ankowledge that your 86=$ was just out of your hat, old exchange rates. When i say something i can always back it up with facts not fiction or bullshit, i leave that for you.

I dont know how many times you have exchanged $ to JPY or other foreing currency, i have done it plenty of times and i never got the true rate. Like i said before the banks want to make a profit, how do you think they will do that if they sell currency for more than they pay for it.

If you ever go to japan make sure you dont exchange AUD=JPY there, then you realy find out what profit is all about, their spread there is like 10%.

This thread is a right laugh, Keep it up guys entertaining read at work. And for the record 32 GTRs decent ones are around the price your suggesting so I dunno where your going to get a 33 from at that price.

Drove the car, hard... so he was genuine about accepting my offer. And, I was I the market.

I don't go in to waste dealer's time... like you obviously did with the F430. I'm sure he's making his 20%+/-, as most dealers look for... and you don't drive the car if your offer is a joke.

Point is, guys, teh guy at Street Machines likely paid about $25k for that car, listed at $35K.... willing to accept $32K. That's what my post is all about... getting the same deal a dealer gets from a guy needing cash now.

These guys have offered you their knowledge from experience accumulated over many years of owning, buying & selling GTR's & dealing with foreign exchange rates, they are not pulling figures out of their hats, they are giving you honest, realistic information yet you have chosen to contradict almost every person offering you advice.

You say you want a car that hasn't been driven hard, yet you yourself admit to driving a car hard on a test drive. How many more 'prospective' buyers do you think have driven this car hard too. Most responsible dealers would never let somebody thrash a car that is for sale on a test drive, I know I certainly won't regardless of whether I thought the test driver was going to buy it or not.

So, you drove the car hard, it has 3 inspections to back up it's condition and the dealer is willing to accept the offer you made.

I mean it's such a good deal, and by your calculations the dealer is making a whopping profit to boot.

I know that someone as well, i think the misconception of people making 10K on a car is still out there. This could have been the case when the R33's were introduced to Aus, but its been over 10 years now, every tom,dick & harry can import a car and make their 1-2K profit. I guess the only way to find out is if they approach a broker and get them to bid on some cars and see what they sell for.

I go shopping in the GTR :O cos I can. Plus with the wrecked back the GTR seats were preferrable, and the Recaros more so as I can throw it around on the way. Need to practice for DECA somehow and it is really only a parking lot battle. Also the curvy Chicks in Epping just loves you with fully sick cars.

It's nice to see Norm's slight tempering in the attitude, but I've seen engineers like him before. Go in hard with half the facts and no experience, make a few minor concessions when called out then deliver a bucket of poo leaving guys like me to recover or close a half billion $ project. I hope you prove me wrong here. Not that this an expensive acquisition unless you get confused over value vs cost.

[/Add selfless personal plug] I myself am quantifying for the forum the major failures and their principal causes in the engines we run, with help from the less fortunate members. With a need to build a solid race engine (I do my own builds in my garage) I purposely set out to discover the limits of an RB25 with the usual suite of shortcuts because short of destruction, failure was my goal. I then documented what I'd done. This is the sort of people we are, and we welcome like minded enthusiasts. A vital few (PranK, Merli, Blitz to name just a few) offer their time to manage and moderate the rest of this unruly herd. You see how we respond to overenthusiastic types who are instant experts. If you have something to offer, great, but we already have a pretty good wheel.

While your goal is well laid out, it's your lack of ability to demonstrate flexibility that is of concern, plus your failure to realise that setting such rigid outcomes increases your probability of catastrophic project failure. Sure you have a GTR, but can it be driven? You might as well waste the money on the Audi.

I mentioned before value vs cost. You may think that with a low cost car you will get good value. Not true (mostly, ok I did but I was just lucky to be half looking and had the cash and the owner was not in real need of cash, just a desire for something new). By saving even 5K on the market average I would expect you to pay 3 times that in repair costs, minimum. An engine alone will cost 9-10K if you can't do it yourself, tow in drive out, bare minimum without turbo getting attention.

The guys offering advice know the list prices at the cheapest suppliers for all the parts off the tops of their heads. Then there is quality machining and building as the parts are useless on their own, then if you are going to track it, what about oil starvation or turbine failure and ingestion phenomena. Most workshops claim to know all about Skylines but the nuances are so minor for significant outcomes that there are few mechanics with the knowledge. Just a single lazy mechanic replacing the front idler bolt with a 5.5 instead of 8.8 or better will destroy the top end in 2000km.

Paying top dollar won't guarantee a solid outcome either, but you look for subtleties like who rebuilt the engine last time. Racepace (Melb), Croydon(Sydney), ProEngines(ACT) for a start. There are others but it takes time to discover what they offer, and that is the fun of being on here. Learning from guys who don't even recognise there is a box to think outside of. At least 2 of those mentioned participate on here, for our benefit. I regularly feel humbled by the specific knowledge some of the guys on here have, such as turbo details. I CBF learning beyond the bare basics. Sure I have the knowledge to design one but the off the shelf parts are a massive choice and variety.

Now you won't get an unthrashed GTR cheap. I give mine a hiding now and again, and then love it to death later. It is just unreasonable to think someone else would cherish and baby one after sorting it out just for your benefit. Would you do that? Just not a reasonable thought process to attempt to validate. You may just be lucky but statistically improbable.

Be prepared to buy cheap and repair, or buy well sorted and enjoy with the price that comes with that. In 12 months, oils aside I've had to replace a rubber IC hose and a roof light bulb. Plus a front right side shaft needs replacing with a reco jobbie as the boot is just now splitting. I have a sickness. I regularly put a car on the stands and do a check underneath for an hour or so, fixing what is needed.

About the only thing is fluid leaks, compression test/leakdown and clunks in the driveline. The rest can be just pure luck. You will never know if the turbos are about to kill your engine. If the car has steel turbines, good chance it's already a good choice, but you're already paying extra.

Final advice, add 5-7K to your goal and be flexible when you see the right car. The joy of the ride continues long after the price tag is forgotten. Oh and don't turn into the next Mines_Datsun, a former member of great fame and ...well you can search and read.

One other note. A GTR is so nice to own and drive that only the desperate or clinically insane will drop the price to get rid of it quick, and they will generally not be well sorted but thrashed with a multitude of problems.

Someone i know bought a 2000 34 GTR ( no side airbags) , he paid 5 million Yen at auction + fob, you do the sums and see how much it cost him to land and comply.

Specialising in Skylines, I have imported numerous R33 & R34 GTR's over the last 9 years, I know exactly what costs are involved. I've done the sums so often. That's why I get so annoyed when people like Fast Canuck post prices for cars he obviously knows absolutely nothing about.

I have daily records of selling prices for all models of GTR's in Japan - good grade and low grade.

I can categorically say beyond any doubt that it is impossible to import/comply & sell on a retail level a good grade (well sorted), genuine kilometre R33 GTR V Spec for under AUS$45,000.

A good grade R33 GTR V SPEC will cost you between 1,800,000 - 2,400,000 yen in Japan.

Fast Canuck should find this information helpful but I have a feeling it's not what he wants to hear, nut I went to the trouble anyway.

Below is actual data from auctions in Japan on recently sold R33 GTR's.

Some are V Spec, some are Non V Spec, some are high klms, some are low klms, some are accident damage.

That car was deregistered about 3 years ago, It has to have a full EPA. They have been trying to register it on and off since. She wont pass emissions, to much blow-by .

Thats the kind of car you will buy for $25 k .
