after some heavy driving tonite i noticed oil on the outside of my bonnet. after closer investigation i found it it had blown out from my forward facing bov in between the grille and headlight infront of my car and back onto my bonnet and headlight....wtf

so im just trying to get me some more knowledge on this issue...

I currently believe this is caused by pressure in the head blowing oil out thru the breather into the intake and back thru the turbo n cooler etc etc. so when the charged air is released thru the bov i get oil blowing out.

so im just wondering is this normal? or a bad sign?

does this cause performance loss due to all the oil blowing into the cylinders?

can this cause poor fuel economy?

could this cause smoke out of the zaust at full throttle when im running high boost because of the excessive oil passing back thru the motor and burning up?

is an oil catch can my fuel economy solution?

any help or opinions appreciated

thanks guys..

edit: sorry i should have put this in the forced induction area... mods ??

could be blow by, or a turbo seal issue.

try a catch can .. or a pipe into a coke bottle from your head breathers.. if there is oil in the bottle then its blow by.

if not then turbo seal could be shagged

yes oil in the combustion with affect power and make it more likely to ping.

also check your oil levels cos its gotta be using oil.. dont wanna ruin your bearings if it runs low/out.

catch can would not be a solution, just an extra tool to figure out where the problem is..

can cause fuel economy issues as you put your foot down more to do the same thing.

i installed a catch can tonite and gave it a good old thrashing and sure enough there is oil in the clear hose so im hoping this is the end and its not a turbo problem... fingers crossed.

on a side note my air/fuel guage is now jumping around a bit since fitting the can. it came with the car so i dont know much about reading an air/fuel guage or where it takes its readings from other then it sits on 14 on idle and under acceleration, then when i back off it moves up to about 18 and hangs there for several seconds or until i accelerate again and it moves back to 14..... anyways now it still behaves like before exept when the car comes on boost it drops back to 13 and sometimes bounces off 11 then back upto 14..... ????

my installation was very simple (the can is looped into the hose between the breather and just before the turbo) and i have triple checked everything... no vac leaks or hoses removed... car feels just as good as before maybe even a little better and definately no pinging.

any ideas?

12.0 - 12.5 is usually the best AFR for on boost.

14.7 or so when cruising to save fuel

bouncing is from the closed loop used on cruise to save fuel.

====

catch can with oil in it .. = not the best..blowby which is usually rings etc worn .

get a comp test done to see how your engine is going..

i got about 145 on all cyl's and it doesn't have blowby.

The 1.7mm hole is nearly 3x the area of a 1mm hole. You do not need restrictors at both ends of the oil supply line. If you have new, additional restrictors at the turbo end, that you did not have before, then you do not need a restrictor at the inlet end.
    • Hi all. Been a while but things are moving along. I just have something that I am wondering about. Since I will use OEM turbo oil pumbing, I got myself a new bolt, the one that goes into the engine block oil feed. As I recall (and see visually) this bolt comes restricted with I think a 1.7mm hole? Not quite sure but it was something around that size. The turbos have 1mm restrictor bolts installed, as necessary due to ball bearings and my higher oil pressures. Can I now just use that OEM bolt with the 1.7mm hole in for the engine block or will this actually be too much oil flow restriction and I have to drill it out first? In my head it would make sense for the bolt to be at least 2mm wide as both turbos take "1mm of oil flow". Do let me know if my logic is flawed here, I just want to make sure I don't kill my turbo bearings with too little oil. Don't know if I can trust the saying I read somewhere that ball bearing turbos essentially only need an oil mist

    • Yeah based on old XRC5964S specs, it looks to be roughly GTX3576R sized? But this 5964S compressor will flow 90lb airflow somewhat similar to the compressors in both the GTX3584RS or G35-1050.. I fully expected the 0.64 rear A/R to choke up top - seems way too small from typical convention - but these are seemingly beneficial over the prior 0.82 results.. Be interesting to see if he comments on the EFR question in that thread - he mentioned in a prior video that BW EFR's were the "cats pajamas 10 years ago", but by the sounds of things all his kits have been using Xona for quite a while now.
    • Yeah it’s still got the oem manual gearbox and clutch, only kinda mods are a blow off valve, coil overs, and a aftermarket intercooler. Also had it for about 2 months now with a lovely midnight purple paint on it.
