Hey all,

Just wondering would anyone happen to have two spare AFM's that i could borrow just to seee if it solves my problem? My car stalls sometimes, when driving sometimes in low gear at little speed it wont rev past 3000rpm, then the problem will go away, then come back. Ive checked the diagnostics and it comes up with code 12, which is the AFM signal. I would like to make certain that its the AFM's before i go out and buy new ones or fix the ones ive got. Ive noticed its been doing it ever since i got the car, but it seems to be getting worse now.

Hi edspaged2 had the same problem with one of my afm i just opened up the afm and resolded all the joint's inside and then reslazed up the panel and no probs since.

Yeah, I resoldered the joints today. I did it on both the air flow meters as I did not know which one may have been playing up. I didnt plug them back in as i'm waiting for the sealant gook to dry. When you resoldered your joints did you notice any dry/broken solder on your AFM's? Or did you just resolder it and all was fine?

Yeah, I resoldered the joints today. I did it on both the air flow meters as I did not know which one may have been playing up. I didnt plug them back in as i'm waiting for the sealant gook to dry. When you resoldered your joints did you notice any dry/broken solder on your AFM's? Or did you just resolder it and all was fine?

my car runs a power fc so it was easy to find which afm was playing up

when i opened her up it had dry solder joints butnone appeared broken i soldered her up and all has been well since with them.

I have a similar problem. Does your car also splutter, meaning when your driving it doesnt rev past 3000 rpm and when u hit gas it just keeps bouncing up and down making this horrid noise like "jee jee jee" then goes away then comes back?

Im gonan try cleaning my coils and then AFM...

yep, the soldering fixed it. It looked dry but wasnt physically disconnected. Melted old solder off and put new solder on. Has been running fine now.

Sir-D check your diagnostics and i bet it will say your AFM's are stuffed. Yeah, my car was spluttering (kinda like it was missing) and wouldnt rev past 3000rpm. pretty embarrassing too. I thought a bus was about to clean me up, but then the car went back to normal again so i booted the pedal! lol.

Resoldering the AFM's. To solder, you first need a soldering iron which looks like this:

You should buy one of these. Theyre really useful especially if you wanna permanently connect wires and stuff like that later on. Good for electronic stuff.

and the solder to actually melt onto the terminals which is this, looks like wire, but its very bendy:

When the soldering iron tip heats up, press it against the connection you wish to solder (this will heat it up) and then press the solder onto the surface. It will melt onto the surfaces which you want to connect. this method is the way to prevent 'dry solder' from forming. How dry solder occurs is when the surface that needs to be connected isnt properly heated up. This is a common problem with skyline AFM's.

Here is the link on soldering the AFM's and how to open them up. Remember to seal up the lid again once youve finished soldering to prevent moisture getting into it. let us know how you go. Always good to give stuff a try:
