Gearbox Noise

I'm quite new to manual transmissions so here goes...

I've just noticed that when I'm sitting in neutral there is a slight grinding noise eminating from the gearbox. When i hold down the clutch it goes away and obviously i can't check for the noise while in gear.

Should I be worried??? *GULP*

Sounds like a release bearing.

Cheap part, but labour isn't

Make sure to get a genuine Nissan item.

Is it something that I should be worried about, like do I have to get it done straight away or will i be OK to leave it for a little while?

Well assuming it is the release bearing, it's just a matter of time before it fails.

Oh, one more thing, it could also be the input shaft.

Gearbox rebuilds are generally labour intensive and therefore expensive (I would say between $600-1000 depending on whats required). However you have little to worry about until you start noticing the gearbox not performing, eg: popping out of gears, not going into gears, crunching on changes etc.

Just let it make noise until it breaks. Mines the same, my input shaft makes noise at idle and it sounds like a bunch of tin cans when in reverse. I just put up with it.

hell my car crunches on gear changes too, i just double clutch

sounds like synchro... did you try heel 'n toe instead of double clutching?

Well I only really get crunches when I'm lazy and don't hold the clutch properly, and there aren't any strange noises in reverse.

There has been one or two times when I haven't been able to get into 1st properly but i think thats when i didn't go into the centre properly.

So is the advice to leave it for now??

Leave it i say....what ever it is it sounds like the problem is in it's early stages. Best off getting the most life out of it....but hey, if you have the $$$ then get it checked out.

R32 gearboxes are around $500

man its just a thrust bearing wait till it squeals like a cut pig and change it, also change ur clutch at the same time
