Was thinking aqbout putting in an intercooler for my r32 gts-t.

Just like to know the pro's and con's of a front mount intercooler that runs through stock pipping vs ones were u buy or make a piping go back up to the motor via the right side of the car.

I realy dont want to cut a hole in my car, That's why im looking at the alternate options at the moment.

blitz do a kit (well i know they do it for a 33, so i figure they'd do it for a 32) that runs back up an uses the factory piping in the engine bay. as long as you have it hooked up so that the long pipe under the intercooler is the hot pipe then its fine. the actual piping isn't much different to stock as they are usually the same size. the advantage of the piping running up the drivers side is that you have less chanse of damaging the piping. it is common for the pipe that runs back under the intercooler to get damaged when you hit something which mean that instead of just having to replace the intercooler you have to replace the piping as well. but performance wise it has more to do with the quality of the cooler more than the piping.

i don't know of any with the blitz setup that is cheap. i know there is a kit on this forum (not sure if its 32 or 33) for about $400, i think its in the group buy section. otherwise the retail on a hybrid kit is $999. but i'd say you will have to cut the hole. i think its a case of save money and cut a hole, or spend money and don't cut a hole.

you shouldnt have to much trouble with the hybrid kits if your car isnt type M. Mine took alot of extra piping and plumbing because it is Type-M (some extra bar in the way making my cooler stick out to far and the pipes not match) but cutting out the front bar is easy enough (bye bye rigidity)

I picked up the justjap kit for like $400 which is fair sweet i spose, its good enough quality (although down the bottom quite a few of the fins arent welded in str8 and are permanently mangled)

Im a cheap arse so i couldnt afford a decent one that runs thru standard piping. Cutting the hole below the battery isnt so bad, its not like a chassis rail or anything (i used a drill :)) but if u have the $ a arent so good with hacking stuff up with powertools (like me) its probably worth spending the extra $. Im on day 7 of installation but if ur car isnt type-M should only take a night or 2

If you are worried about cutting holes and stuff, why not just get someone else to install it? The people I have spoken to quote $200 to $400 for installation depending on the car and kit (i.e. what they have to modify), they will do the modifications to the front bar, cut holes, run piping etc, so much easier than trying to screw around with it yourself if you aren't too handy with tools.

look in the parts for sale section.

there is an AVO kit which uses the stock pipes in the engine bay.

the guy was asking $600 I think.

they are worth over $1100 new.

definitely worth it..

also, if you are not after more than say 200rwkw, you could buy a R34 GTT side mount intercooler.

it needs mods to the end tank which could be done for about $50 from any aluminium welding place.

Were is the extra bar on the tpye M.. Cus that's the r32 i have. If it's the acutal metal piece on the bumpa then im all good cuz i had to cut it out for the gtr front bar. I realy dont want to cut a hole, but I'm going to know and I'll do it myself.. Just dont trust other people with my car when comes to things like that. Just though some money in on a group buy on an GKtech FMIC.

Has anyone here installed one of the Hybrid GT kits or the GK Tech kits on a R34 GT-T? I'd imagine that a hole will also have to be cut on the chassis for the piping & some front bar trimmed but would the fan blades need to be trimmed as well like they would on a R33? Which is the more suitable size, 600x300x76? And is it the tube and fin thats more suitable for street cars(ie. short burst of power runs)?

Sorry not trying to hijack the thread, just thought others incl. myself would be interested in the outcome of not using std piping for a FMIC kit on a R34.

the instructions that come with the kit are actually done on a r34, so yes you do have to cut blades and hole. and yes the tube and fin is the one considered better for street. but hyrbid no longer make the bar and plate according to the hybrid website.

If the Tube/Fin design is better for street use then why do people still fit the bar/plate coolers?

From my understanding the Tube/Fin flow better where the Bar/Plate cool better...

Hmmm you gave me a second thought about buying a Gktech FMIC kit as they are a Bar/Plate core... The HYBRID Gt Spec is a Tube/Fin... I dont mind paying the difference as long as its the better choice...

bar and plate are better for drag use as they take longer to heat up, but take longer to cool down and hold the heat more. for short bursts the bar and plate are better, but for track use the tube and fin are better. but on the street driving to work and a bit of a fang around it doesn't make that big of a difference.

another option would be to buy the gtech then buy a hybrid tube/fin cooler on its own and match the 2 up. the hybrid cooler should only cost about $300 so you basically get a hybrid setup for $700. but that is also about the same as you would pay on ebay for a hybrid kit.

I wont have the time and money to do that, thats why im asking for everyones opinion... But i think for my application the Gktech will do the job more then enough... im chasing 200+rw/kw atm... then my end goal is 300rw/kw... i think the difference between the Gktech and HYBRID is very minimal at those power levels...

Should be ordering my FMIC kit within the next week or two...

Or you can do what I did and buy a second hand GTR intercooler and have the pipe work made up!

Cost my friend only $600 all up.

But if your capable like me than you can get an R33 GTR intercooler, make the pipe work up yourself (the hole required to cut has factory reinforcement around it because it's where GTR pipe work comes through standard and has been blocked off on the GTS-T - So safe,clean and structually sound! Plus the bonus I got from making up custom pipework was the 120degree to plenum set up which has been proven to cut at least 5L from the intake path = less lag) and all up cost me including getting my front bar intake hieghtend to give maximum air flow over the intercooler and resprayed = $650 = :D for a fully custom job!

$650 for a second hand GTR FMIC fitted is too much... would much rather spend $630 and buy the HYBRID GT Spec FMIC kit an at least its new with 12 months warranty...

I think the Gktech FMIC kit for $400 is a bargain and will do the job better then the GTR FMIC...

    • Thanks, I removed the fuse and the relay from the car and made my own circuit with them to test them with a test bulb.  I will look for the wiring diagram and go from there.
    • Jdm DC2R is also nice for a FF car compared to the regular hatches of the time.
    • Now that the break-in period for both clutch and transmission is nearly over I'd like to give some tips before I forget about everything that happened, also for anyone searching up how to do this job in the future: You will need at least 6 ton jack stands at full extension. I would go as far as to say maybe consider 12 ton jack stands because the height of the transmission + the Harbor Freight hydraulic platform-style transmission jack was enough that it was an absolute PITA getting the transmission out from under the car and back in. The top edge of the bellhousing wants to contact the subframe and oil pan and if you're doing this on the floor forget about trying to lift this transmission off the ground and onto a transmission jack from under the car. Also do not try to use a scissor jack transmission lift. You have to rotate the damn thing in-place on the transmission jack which is hard enough with an adjustable platform and a transmission cradle that will mostly keep the transmission from rolling off the jack but on a scissor lift with a tiny non-adjustable platform? Forget it. Use penetrating oil on the driveshaft bolts. I highly recommend getting a thin 6 point combination (box end + open end) wrench for both the rear driveshaft and front driveshaft and a wrench extension. These bolts are on tight with very little space to work with and those two things together made a massive difference. Even a high torque impact wrench is just the wrong tool for the job here and didn't do what I needed it to do. If your starter bolts aren't seized in place for whatever reason you can in fact snake in a 3/8 inch ratchet + 6 point standard chrome socket up in there and "just" remove the bolts for the starter. Or at least I could. It is entirely by feel, you can barely fit it in, you can barely turn the stupid ratchet, but it is possible. Pull the front pipe/downpipe before you attempt to remove the transmission. In theory you don't have to, in practice just do it.  When pulling the transmission on the way out you don't have to undo all the bolts holding the rear driveshaft to the chassis like the center support bearing and the rear tunnel reinforcement bar but putting the transmission back in I highly recommend doing this because it will let you raise the transmission without constantly dealing with the driveshaft interfering in one way or another. I undid the bottom of the engine mount but I honestly don't know that it helped anything. If you do this make sure you put a towel on the back of the valve cover to keep the engine from smashing all the pipes on the firewall. Once the transmission has been pulled back far enough to clear the dowels you need to twist it in place clockwise if you're sitting behind the transmission. This will rotate the starter down towards the ground. The starter bump seems like it might clear if you twist the transmission the other way but it definitely won't. I have scraped the shit out of my transmission tunnel trying so learn from my mistake. You will need a center punch and an appropriate size drill bit and screw to pull the rear main seal. Then use vice grips and preferably a slide hammer attachment for those vice grips to yank the seal out. Do not let the drill or screw contact any part of the crank and clean the engine carefully after removing the seal to avoid getting metal fragments into the engine. I used a Slide Hammer and Bearing Puller Set, 5 Piece from Harbor Freight to pull the old pilot bearing. The "wet paper towel" trick sucked and just got dirty clutch water everywhere. Buy the tool or borrow it from a friend and save yourself the pain. It comes right out. Mine was very worn compared to the new one and it was starting to show cracks. Soak it in engine oil for a day in case yours has lost all of the oil to the plastic bag it comes in. You may be tempted to get the Nismo aftermarket pilot bearing but local mechanics have told me that they fail prematurely and if they do fail they do far more damage than a failed OEM pilot bushing. I mentioned this before but the Super Coppermix Twin clutch friction disks are in fact directional. The subtle coning of the fingers in both cases should be facing towards the center of the hub. So the coning on the rearmost disk closest to the pressure plate should go towards the engine, and the one closest to the flywheel should be flipped the other way. Otherwise when you torque down the pressure plate it will be warped and if you attempt to drive it like this it will make a very nasty grinding noise. Also, there is in fact an orientation to the washers for the pressure plate if you don't want to damage the anodizing. Rounded side of the washer faces the pressure plate. The flat side faces the bolt head. Pulling the transmission from the transfer case you need to be extremely careful with the shift cover plate. This part is discontinued. Try your best to avoid damaging the mating surfaces or breaking the pry points. I used a dead blow rubber hammer after removing the bolts to smack it sideways to slide it off the RTV the previous mechanic applied. I recommend using gasket dressing on the OEM paper gasket to try and keep the ATF from leaking out of that surface which seems to be a perpetual problem. Undoing the shifter rod end is an absolute PITA. Get a set of roll pin punches. Those are mandatory for this. Also I strongly, strongly recommend getting a palm nailer that will fit your roll pin punch. Also, put a clean (emphasis on clean) towel wrapped around the back end of the roll pin to keep it from shooting into the transfer case so you can spend a good hour or two with a magnet on a stick getting it out. Do not damage the shifter rod end either because those are discontinued as well. Do not use aftermarket flywheel bolts. Or if you do, make sure they are exactly the same dimensions as OEM before you go to install them. I have seen people mention that they got the wrong bolts and it meant having to do the job again. High torque impact wrench makes removal easy. I used some combination of a pry bar and flathead screwdriver to keep the flywheel from turning but consider just buying a proper flywheel lock instead. Just buy the OS Giken clutch alignment tool from RHDJapan. I hated the plastic alignment tool and you will never be confident this thing will work as intended. Don't forget to install the Nismo provided clutch fork boot. Otherwise it will make unearthly noises when you press the clutch pedal as it says on the little installation sheet in Japanese. Also, on both initial disassembly and assembly you must follow torque sequence for the pressure plate bolts. For some reason the Nismo directions tell you to put in the smaller 3 bolts last. I would not do this. Fully insert and thread those bolts to the end first, then tighten the other larger pressure plate bolts according to torque sequence. Then at the end you can also torque these 3 smaller bolts. Doing it the other way can cause these bolts to bind and the whole thing won't fit as it should. Hope this helps someone out there.
