I picked up my R32 GTS-T last night, Only problem was the lights behind the dash were out :O

The guy I bought it off offered to fix but I wanted to drive it asap so I said I'd do it.

I'm sure its an easy job but I don't have the service manual yet (anyone know a source?)

The clock backlight works fine its just the gauges that are affected. If one of the backlight bulbs blows, I assume the others keep working? If so it means its just a fuse issue since all the gauges are out?

I checked the interior fuses and didn't find anything blown (though some were missing, probably the spares). I ran out of daylight to get to the engine bay fusebox. Does anyone know where the fuse is?

I really need to get that service manual :O

Cheers guys

Could be a stupid question on my part, but do you have a dimmer knob? Most Skylines have one installed by compliancers as part of the import compliance rules. Mine looks like a vintage amplifer knob. =-o

I fiddled with all the knobs ... erm wait... played with.... errmm...

the knob isn't turned down anyway :(

the wires too the dimmer could have fallen off.. mine was very badly installed..

worth a check if you cant see any fuses out...

edit : does the air con unit and head deck dim when you turn on the lights .. if not that means it isn't getting power.. which would support the fuse/wiring issue rather than blown globes

Ah! Good diagnostic there, Craved!

Definately try that one, it should confirm power for you, or as Craved said, check out the install of the dimmer. Getting that whole dash panel loose can be done by following the stereo install guides for R32's.

Check those fuses first, cause it's easier to do than loosen the panel.

(oh, and don't fiddle with your knob too much, otherwise it'll go stiff and you'll need to lube it up)

 @ Steve playing with his knob :) You know, you must be careful when you select knob placement. Never expose it unnecessarily - discretion is the order of the day.

Dude if it turns out you need to replace your dash bulbs, try http://www.skylinesaustralia.com/forums/in...howtopic=115618

I checked tonight and the climate control dims when I turn on the headlights

Looks like I'm taking apart my dash. I may aswell redo the entire thing in LED's so I won't have the problem again for a long time, just have to decide which color to go for now

Cheers for all your help

Matt yell out if you need a hand. It's actually a lot easier than you think. I've just changed my climate control to blue (to match headunit). It's not as groovy as I thought - doing it again I'd probably opt for 1000mcd white LEDs to keep it all low-key. If you choose 3000mcd LEDs you will be more affected by the 'directionality' of the LEDs. That is, it will be harder to diffuse the light and make it appear more like a glow and less like a laser pointer.

Hey dude if it was a globe only one would be out but because there isnt any light on the dash at all indicates the fuse is blown. It will be the fuse box in boot next to battery. Its the one that says tail light L i think it said. 3rd fuse from the bottom on the left side. Should be a 10amp fuse. Thats for a R33 but i guess the fuse in your engine bay would be same as mine in the boot so check it out before pulling apart ure dash.

Hi Sidd.

The 'grain of wheat' bulbs are the same in R32 and R33. The link Craved posted would be great for replacing with 12V bulbs. I tried Jaycar unsuccessfully - didn't realise DSE had what I was after in 12V with wires only.

If you are interested in the LED route, this post and onwards has bits and pieces on how to do it. Very simple and effective. If your dash dimmer also dims the climate control, I recommend 3000mcd LEDs, otherwise 1000mcd with the 500mW resistor. As the bulbs are the same between Skyline models the LEDs will be substitutes also.

The steps and a few reference pics are in the thread/post below. I hope it helps
