But by the tim eyou have all the Data Acq gear you could have a pretty quick car

As of last tuesday I have the data acq gear.

C201.jpg

Well most of it, I just put in an order with Pixpress for another $1K worth of stuff to complete the Pi System 2 installation into the R32GTST. Damn those plugs are expensive.

Then I can practise being the data engineer and driver, that means talking to myself. I have a feeling it is much easier when I am telling a driver what he is doing wrong, rather than convincing myself. Should be interesting.

:) cheers

PS; I sure hope it makes the car go faster.

LOL...yeh im actually pretty excited...in a geeky kinda way.

In the next few weeks i get to actually use my data acq gear properly when doing some tyre testing, as im doing a mini comparision between brands of semi slicks, and can see what each tyre does for corner speed/lateral G, wheelspin, braking Gs etc etc. Its going to be cool to actually get my head around it all and find out which track tyre is actually quickest over a single lap. Sadly wont get to do 10 laps and see if one is better over a distance as A my car would blow up doing 10 flat laps

yes $100K spent on a GTR to be slower than a 996 (or older) GT3 cup car was definately not wise spending...

Well one prob was it was a drag car in Japan and I converted it into more of a club sprint car.

50k is nothing-16k was the shocks alone, the Motec was another 20k with wiring and sensors, the OS Gikon box was 6k, diffs and shafts were 5k(there is nearly 50k there and havnt touched the motor yet-me thinks peeps on here need to check their prices) So it made sense to me the GT3 Cup car with all that in it and Porsche amazing engineering and relaibility(which most R32 GTR's dont have a lot of)and i still say the Porsche is a good deal.

our car hasnt been beaten by a porsche yet! ever!!

and we have raced many and we havent spent there kind of money either, gt2's & the bi turbo gemballa, cup cars whatever , we have been faster on the track and in a straight line.

nissan all the way

cheers russ

cool- you must tune into a Targa Tasmania one year-watch for a guy called Jim Richards

gont get me wrong porsche is great. a friend of mine owns a 996 GT3 Cup Car (04 spec) and we ran it in prod sports and the natinal GT class. It is quick, reliable etc. but give me a sound stock GTR and 100K and I reckon I could beat it.

Give me ya mates 04 GT3 cup car and 100k and you wont see which way I went

On price you may have an argument-on engineering you have no chance-the Rb26 is still a 20 year old design(it cant even pass current emissions) as is most of the engineering and technology in a GTR-cant compare to current German engineering, and with Nissan's current commitment to great engineered car *cough* and its rock solid commitment to racing*another big cough* Nissan dont even rate on the well engineered list any more

Jim will drive whatever car he is given  Just because he races a Porsche and does well isnt the end of the discussion. Hell the Whites won in a GTR, A WRX the year before?

Hell buy the 120Y Sports Sedan i saw a while ago...it would probably be quicker :(

But when it comes down to it, who cars which is quicker, they are both blindingly quick...i would take the Porka any day. :(

My point was the Porsche's win an amazing amount of Targa type rallies-GTR won 1

and also in 10 years time when Porsche are still making amazing GT3 type cars and smashing all sorts of motorsport , Nissan will be.....ummm.ohhh ....lets see Nissan will be .....ummm doing nothing exept flogging their next fat cat yankee targeted GTR and marketing the next Tiida-good grief

We are talking dedicated track cars here...not Targa cars.

Plus, i think the main reason Porsche has won so many Targas is purely the people running them. Im not saying they arent kick ass, im sayign for the money you can most likely build quicker circuit cars.

Put me in a 4wd Porsche turbo, the rest of the field in Mk1 Escorts and they would still beat me. No disrespect to the guys thats run the GTRs at Targa, but their driving experience and support crew are not likely in the same league as Richards, Fitzgerald, Quinn etc. Anway, thats not the discussion.

Its a tired old example but the Racepace GTR. It is the most impressive modded car i know of. Not only is it BS quick, its quiet, has all the interior trim, air con, nice clutch etc etc. I dont know what its best time around tracks are, but i know iot did a 1:19 around Sandown on street tyres with a passenger in the car. Im told it has done a 1:16 or something at a sprint. What do Cup Cars do on slicks at Sandown with 350-300kgs less weight?

Now that GTR is thoroughly modified...at what expense? But i fancy its similar money to a GT3 Cup Car including all the cost of development...imagine if it was stripped, caged and set up for slicks. It would devour a Cup Car.

And the best thing. If you bin it you are only up for about 20k to re-shell the car. Now i know form the experiences from another forum goer thats not the case with a Cup Car :(

hang on? now it's a cup car plus 100K? before it was a GTR with 100K spent on it was slower than a cup car? GTR costs under $30K even with 100K spent on mods we are at $130K. A good 996 cup car is $180K.

anyway this thread isn't GTR VS GT3. just some of us were shocked that you claim that you spent $100K on a GTR only to have it handed to you by GT3s...the coment was made that perhaps that $100K could have been better spent. that's all.

and troy is right a new GTR shell is still only a quarter of the price of a GT3 Cup Car shell. and if you think waiting on nissan parts is bad. try being a privateer waiting on something like a complete porsche shell.

why not play fair and try a 32 GTR vs a 1990 model GT3... which will be quicker then?

I'm very interested in your opinion gtr660hp, you are suggesting to start with a very expensive car there.

The key difference I can think of between the gt3 and a gtr is the gt3 is about 300kg lighter.

But if you start to spend big $$ on your components surely you should be treating it as a business. And if its a business then you should have a business case.

How many sec/lap does a motec give you over any other ecu at 10% of the price?

How many sec/lap is $15k of suspension worth compared to $5k of suspension?

And did you break the diff and driveshafts before you spent $5k on custom ones?

Gary might have an opinion on those questions too....

I totally agree about the gearbox though it sucks in competition and you have to spend big to get a good one :D

I don't think you can suggest that having a v8 supercar driver drive 2 roads cars once is a god way to compare them, better to look at lap times at the same track for well prepared cars.

My race car owes me under $30k and that includes the 1 1/2 engine rebuilds so far (yes I suck at building motors). Its about 1 sec off the class records at the moment, and hopefully we can get closer with more track time.

Personally I'm keen to put a Soarer 4L V8 (maybe s/charged) in an MX-5. There's a whole can of Porka ass whuppin' but it still isn't a track GTR, which is the subject of the thread. Alternatively there are Lotus 7 copies and other dedicated track cars will hand a porsche it's lofty price tag. Until you come in with an F1 for every raising of the stakes I'll throw a quicker car at you. I suggest we stick on topic.

It would be interesting to know how aforementioned series of expensively built GTR's would go with a different steerer.......sometimes the slowest part of the car is the driver, no matter the price tag of the mods.

BTW the RPM GTR has pulled a 1:16 at Sandown on street rubber. Slicks would be interesting, as would a weght reduction. A GTR32 that's all stripped out has done a 1:15. Both extraordinary examples of the breed.

I'm still to get back to the GTS25t IOT humble some GTRs, but with at least 6-8 weeks slow buildup after back surgery it isn't coming soon.

LOL...there is my opening. My little GTST would hand most R32 GTRs their ass if only i had the same power. :D

...And the Nazis almost won WWII, and if i wasnt poor, ugly and uncharismatic i would have boned Keira Knightley by now

what 1990 GT3? they weren't in production to the late 1990's.

Stay tuned for a new series starting up soon. I'm not allowed to say anything else (if anything at all)

should be friendly with the GTR's :D

RPM GTR has done a low 1:15 on R compound tyres, full interior, stereo etc.... And people always wondered what happened to all the 'fast' Porkas that used to attend the Maserati club track days when this car started to consistently hand them their a55....

Passing a 'cheater' Porka on the main straight at Sandown like it was parked on the side of the road, PRICELESS....

Bloody Datsuns......

yes very good point. i think unless money is absolutely no concern a $20K ecu is wasted on a GTR. Buy something good for under $4K and spend the rest towards an OS Giken/HKS/Hollinger sequential 6 speed which at $20K you could have that 6 speed sequential and say a power FC or just a motec and a stock gear box. I know which combo I'd prefer.

A 964 RS then :O

Hey, I'd take the RS any day of the week, but then again, I'm a big porker fan, however I'd put my money on a well prepped 32...

    • I just got to work and skimmed through 61508 and 61511. I was surprised the CSA adopted both, but neither are enforced. To recap what I read, it states that in a perfect world, they should be segregated but they acknowledge that this is not industry standard and clearly mention that they allow mixing of safety and non-safety. 61511 also mentions software segregation like AB does in their safety PLC's.   Now if only I could go back to control, let alone safety over comms. In my current line of work, we're only allowed monitoring and basic control over comms. Everything critical must still be hard wired as much as possible.
    • I've unfortunately never been as they're on the complete other side of the continent and another country that isn't currently letting us in as easily as they use to. I even heard their stop signs over there actually say "Stop" instead of "Arret". If I decided to trek the 48h drive, I wouldn't know when or where to stop haha. Whenever I order parts from UP Garage, I order from Japan as it's cheaper. Same with GKTech... oddly enough, it's cheaper shipped from Australia then it is the US.  UP Garage Japan operates their US leg though, unlike Tomei. If Tomei JPN had the power to close down Tomei USA, I'm sure it would be done in a day. They're two completely separate entities. Tomei JPN messed up somewhere originally agreeing to its creation and got sacked big time.
    • I asked someone about this and he told me about the Audi 1.8T engine. But I think it would be difficult to swap
    • I don't know that machine specifically, but I'd personally go for something with a little more kick than 130amp. Around up to 180 would be good. At the 6mm range, you're really pushing the machine hard and don't have a long period you can run for with out needing to give it a rest. Lots of MIG machines come with a regulator and hose. A lot will come with a starter roll of wire too, but it isn't too expensive to buy. I'd recommend NOT buying a massive roll too, as you don't want it sitting around FOREVER in the machine between uses and potentially going to shit. For thin sheet metal, get a roll of 0.6mm if you're doing over 3mm and above, switch over to 0.8mm wire. Even by 2mm you'd probably really want to switch. As for gas battle, it's all swap and go style now. You'll pay a bottle deposit, and then X amount to swap for a full one. I think it's like $200 or $300 for a D Size bottle upfront as "deposit", and like $110 to $150 per swap. My D size CO2/argon bottle lasts a fair bit of welding on the MIG. And I run an E size bottle on the TIG. For DIY MIG, stick with a D size bottle. If you really start to get into a LOT of welding and doing it really regularly, then upgrade. If you're like most DIY car guys, one D bottle will last you 2 or 3 years easily. I think I've been on my current bottle about 5 years. It is starting to get low, but I've been smashing it a lot more the last 6 months.
    • SR20s came with cars like the Bluebird and Primera, but the RB20 never came. The ones in Turkey were either brought in specially or from abroad. That's why RBs aren't as common as SRs. And if a part breaks or I need to replace it when doing maintenance, it's harder to find parts for RBs.
