Looking to change the stock turbos on my 32 GTR. Here are my options

R34 N1s

HKS GT-SS

High flow with ball baring

I'm not interested in peak power, just want a very streetable car thats super responsive. Can anyone comment on each of the above setup?

I'm thinking of just high flowing because this is the most economical way but please share your experiences.

Other mods will include:

exhaust from turbo back

PFC

Boost controller (either EBC or bleed valve)

I'm in the same boat and was thinking of GT3071R's but came to realize that they would be a bit big for what i want...but I think I settled on these...

The graph looks great and will be streetable but still have the gusto to go over the top if I want....

These ones are a good as well but power would be down from the GT2871R's that I mentioned previously...

If you know how to read the graphs and have a target for your car just search the Garrett site and you'll find what you want. Plus you wont be paying the "HKS tax" and will still be getting a great product.

Hope this helps

What about high flow or N1s

Everything ive read about the GT-SS points to a very very good turbo, as close to stock response as the stock turbo's as you can get. I beleive they're less laggy than even the N1's.

Ive seen a GTR with these turbos plus the normal add-ons make 280KW at all 4wheels at about 18PSI.

With 21PSI-22PSI you'd break 300KW.

Id say for street and track, they're a very good option. just dont want more than 300KW down the road, cause there almost out of puff at this power figure.

N1's are a bit more laggy, but will give you a little more power at similar boost levels. The N1's were designed by NISMO to be the best compromise between response and power for motorsport. Im sure they know what they were doing when they built it.

Either would be a good option, personally id go the GT-SS's.

Cheers.

What kind of RWK will be seen from GT-SS. I'm chasing around 300 with near stock drivability

If you have a stock engine i wouldn't use big turbos ( its not going to last you long).

I have GTSS'S in my 34, all stock low k's, unopened engine, just exhaust and power f/c, just a little laggier than stock turbos, if you believe dynos ( i don't, they all read different) she made 289rwkw @16 psi.

There is different spec R34 N1's..

I still think you cant go past the Garret GT2560R 707160-5 turbos for std motor

they spool every bit as good as the gt-ss and have better top end for less boost and are more friendly to the pocket (these are the r34n1 turbos with the 0.6 comp housing not the 0.42)

on std internals and 20 psi i have made 530rwhp and have run them on the car from basically since day dot when the r33 gtr was stock std.

GT-SS are a fantastic street turbo setup for a GTR, and down the line if you look for more power, they are capable of making over 300 awkw with a set of cams and fuel system upgrade :(

For your application I think GT-SS's would be a better alternative to N1's

Garret GT2560R 707160-5 turbos for std motor they spool every bit as good as the gt-ss.

on std internals and 20 psi i have made 530rwhp

I find it very hard to beleive a set of turbo's small enough to spool up as quick as GT-SS's would be able to make anything near 530RWHP at 20PSI....

Contradicts many other GTR's ive seen with N1'S, GT2530's, TDO5's and even GT2540's. All of which are bigger and laggier than GT-SS, but can flow a LOT more BHP.But none of which make anywhere near 530RWHP at ONLY 20PSI!!!

Sounds like a very friendly dyno reading IMO... :(

One of our customers car recently upgraded from high flow GTR turboes to HKS GT-SS turbos. He uses it for club racing and is very competitive.

Standard heads and cams but had degree wheels fitted. Usual support mods.

The only change was the turboes and split dumps and degree wheels, everything else was the same!

I could show you the dyno graphs showing a direct comparison between the two but that only shows part of the story.

I drove both vehicles after the tune.

The GT-SS spooled up about 300rpm quicker than the high flows but felt like 1000rpm on the road.

The top end of the GT-SS was 20kw or so up on the high flows but because of the smooth torque felt like 100kw on the road.

The GT-SS were very progressive with throttle input because of the roller bearing core vs the sluggish response when you floored it with the high flows.

They really are a very good turbo "on the road".

The reality of is: There is no comparison.

Dyno numbers can become just a game of whose is biggest is best, but thats not always the case. I'd rather drive a 300rwkw GTR with torque from 3500 all the way to 8000rpm with instant throttle reponse than a 400rwkw monster that doesn't do a thing until 5000rpm.

Cheers,

Mike

high flow stockies will still cost you a couple of grand... wont make as much power as gt-ss, wont feel as good imo, and wont have as much response or top end....

I think the general feedback from most people here, is for what you want, go the GT-SS.

Now go order some (try greenline or nengun if your not sure where to get them) and let us know what you think when they are on.

    • Just something I found searching for more info on Emotion R, apparently the ECR33 Skyline GTS25t was either originally black, or there were two of them, the black one being the original demo car, then building a white one which was part of the 1997-onwards (to at least 2008!) • Try fabricating something like this and install it under the pedals? Not sure if it's legal or not....
    • Even though I have some pretty good (brand) ratchet ringies, I avoid using them to break open tight bolts. A broken ratchet is very annoying.
