Hi there guys and gals the names Shane and this is my first post here on SAU.

Just a bit of background info quickly, i am a member on supraforums.com.au as my daily driven car is a 93 Supra, but i have been a big fan of the Skyline since its humbles beginnings of sucking the headlights out of v8's around mt panorama.

The reason im here is because a good mate of mine and I have come up with an idea and are throwing up the possobilities, the pros and cons etc.

What we wish to do is purchase an R32 prefferably a GTR as a solid base. There is no need for the car to be registered or made complient as we only wish to use the car for track days, and club outings so on and so forth. We are hoping to mod the car engine wise, interior, and overall look to really make it into some sort of track weapon. We both have some knowledge of the auto industryand are using this ase a base project to start us off in hopefully the right track we wish to go.

What we would like to know from owners of skylines in genereal and from the owners of R32's turbo or non turbo, what are your opinions on the car and what potential do they have to be modded. Do you guys know of any issues we should look for before purchasing apart from the general? What year, month, model are known to be the best of the R32 as im not sure of the history as i have only worked on my Supra.

If this project gets off the ground i will do my best to keep you informed of the project and hopefully meet some of you guys at a track day in the near future!

Any information you can provide would be much appreciated.

Regards

Shane

Hi and welcome.

Good choice on track car.

R32 gtr was designed and built for circuit racing.

I’ll try to answer some of your questions/concerns and will keep in mind that you are using this for race purpose only.

I assume you will get an 89 model as they are the only ones to be imported still.

So.

You will end up getting a gtr with a 17 year old tired rb26dett.

This is not going to be a cheap exercise so here is what I would do if I had money to throw around.

ENGINE

Oil control

RB’s in general (all of them, be it 20, 25, 26, 30) have an oil control problem in race conditions.

More so when the engine is in a 4wd car due to the G’s the things can pull.

Here is a link on what one of our forums GURU’s have put together regarding this issue.

http://www.skylinesaustralia.com/forums/in...howtopic=110680

Turbo’s

GTR’s and almost all skylines have ceramic exhaust wheels on the turbo.

These tend to de-laminate and break under excessive shaft speed and heat (which is the result of increased boost)

The problem on GTR’s with the twin turbs is that when one or both turbo’s lose and exhaust wheel, it seems to send ceramic particles/dust back through the exhaust manifold and back in to the engine giving it a “unwanted” port and polish.

There have been a few people on here with busted engines due to this exact problem.

SOOOOO.. change the turbos…

His link will show you what results people have achieved with their RB26’s using what mods etc…

http://www.skylinesaustralia.com/forums/in...showtopic=93880

Coil packs

Lets admit it, 17 years of heating up and cooling down is eventually going to degrade the performance of something that sits in between the rocker covers of an engine.

Seems to be the most common reason for misfires under acceleration right in the meaty part of the engines torque curve.

SPLIT FIRE direct replacements seem to be the way to go.

ECU

Without a doubt, the easiest and most common path here is the Apexi Power FC.

You can search more on that if you like.

Suspension and Brakes

We have a Section dedicated for this..

http://www.skylinesaustralia.com/forums/in...php?act=SF&f=59

Has plenty of threads and info from some of the luckier people on here who get to use their GTR’s the way the Nissan gods intended.

Gearbox and diffs

STRONG.

I doubt very much that at club level and using it for circuit racing and hill climbs etc that you would break a GTR diff or gearbox.

Be smart with your clutch choice (read: OS triple plate y0 is not always the best just cause it costs the same as a new hyundia Getz) and you will have no problems.

Change all the fluids for gearbox, diff, clutch, power steering and obviously engine and use good quality stuff that has been tested.

Searching for these items on here will yield many good results from those who once again, Race their cars properly.

My last recommendation is this.

Since it’s a race only car… STRIP THE THING…

Take out every thing that is not needed.

All carpets, all sound deadner, all non requied seats, the bits in the boot etc.

At close to 1500kg standard trim, it’s the lightest gtr but still no lightweight in terms of race car.

One last thing.

Sydneykid on these forums says he is human….

I don’t believe him.

I think he is some sort of skyline / RB robot.

Who is a Database attached to a keyboard that answers all questions stupid or in depth, with exact and friendly replies.

He gets rather busy though with almost everyone asking him questions directly.

I’m sure if you post specific questions in the appropriate sections, he will stumble upon them eventually and add his reply.

I also suggest searching for anything you want to know in particular first as some people on here have “So a search” as a short cut key on their keyboards.

When searching, make sure you change the parameters to search back to ALL threads instead of the default 30 days.

I’ll stop now.

TT

Since when?? The 15 year rule is no longer in existence, so anyone inporting an r32 is far more likely to go for a later model 92 - 94 as the cars are now all to be complianced under SEVS. Furthermore the guy is not road registering so complaince is not an issue. Unless i am gravely mistaken....

My advice would be to look for a later model if possible, there were some 89 r32s (gtr's and gts-t's) that came in unfer the 15year rule that were real s**t boxes which would never have been allowed under sevs. Maybe talk to J-spec about importing without compliance, im not sure how that all works, but if possible i would try get a later model if you can.

as far as mods go, see above cause i dont know a hell of a lot about that, but what i do know is the rb26dett is a very strong engine with massive potential and aftermarket parts are quite easy to come by these days. best of luck and keep us informed...

if you don't need it to be road registered, find a shell that cannot be registered (writeoff, failed compliance, parts import etc) and build it up. That way you start from scratch. That's if you don't have access to a CAMS accredited license that makes you eligible for a race import.

However if you are eligible for a race import then you can buy GTR's that are in various stages of modification. From:

to

to

http://www.j-spec.com.au/list/6377

(just using race imports on our mailing list as examples). There's heaps more modified ones out there. As a race import it dosen't have to meet the strict rules for SEVS so you can actually hunt around for some real bargains in japan.

    • Probably a smart choice to buy one vs build, purely for the motivation part as you said! Imagine the metal dust everywhere from grinding all the steel to build one. Ha ha ha!   Also, post a photo of your garage.   Mine is below, this is where I've been cleaning and have already half filled a caged 6*4 trailer. And this is after my cleaning expedition mentioned previously... The middle normally has a car in it, but I'm dumping things in the middle as I sort through them. And poor skyline was dusty and has had the lightest few drops of rain and now it looks atrocious and needs to be dragged back out and washed thoroughly! And yes to the right is technically another bay, you really can only see 2 bays out of 3 in this picture.
    • It's more like on average the things I see a lot of things going wrong. Yes, usually the people who reach out are the ones who are having problems but on average it feels like mechanics and tuners here aren't really competent. I swing between thinking my standards are just way too high and wondering whether people really are just this dumb. I just had the strangest 10+ reply argument on a Facebook group over someone insisting that the factory R34 GTT boost control solenoid reduces boost pressure to 5 psi when it's on and raises boost pressure to 7 psi when it's off despite showing the exact plumbing in the factory service manual and the solenoid behavior detailed in the FSM.
