Pod Enclosure With Cai Design

I know most of you are going to think I have too much time on my hands, and now with uni holidays I DO!

Since im waiting to receive my FMIC Kit, I been searching and pondering a method of making a CAI system using a pod that is also legal! I have read 100's of threads on partitions and home made air boxes but not one of them tickled my fancy. So i have put pen to paper (mouse to mouse pad ) and thought of a very easy, simple yet efficient closed CAI system...

What you guys think??? This should be legal (in NSW) cause the Pod is covered right??

Your only problem now is getting enough air into that enclosure through that pipe.

I made my own setup similar to yours (without the surrounding - just the cold air intake) from stock intercooler piping. Works well, but I think that if I sealed the pod off completely, then it would have an adverse effect (not enough air getting in).

Maybe come up with a better intake system that will guarantee more air going to the pod.

I'm pretty sure if you went 4" or even 5" it would be more then adequate air supply for the POD... Either way its a MUCH more flowing design then the factory air box... Even use mandrel bends with the intake pipe to allow more flow...

By sealing off the POD in my design, you will prevent any hot air being sucked in therefore your air source is outside the engine bay... not to mention it makes it legal...

yeah, nice theory. my only suggestion would be to leave a decent size hole (or a few smaller holes) at the bottom of the 10" pipe so as it can suck extra air. and being at the bottom it will be less visible to the boys in blue.

True... but that means drilling out a whole that is going to be 4" - 5" something I don't really want to do. Why not just utilize the 3" hole that's already there provided you have an aftermarket FMIC.

Thanks Mads... I will defiantly build a CAI after my FMIC install and I think this will be the best design so far... I personally wouldn’t cut a hole on the bottom but rather add an additional intake pipe

you could get some flexible silicon piping from autobarn for about $20 to use as the additional piping, and just run in down inside the engine bay to the front bar.

i just have a cold air duct coming up from the front bar through the existing smic hole to my pod, but i have it open as well. up here in freezing QLD you don't have to have the pod enclosed, just a fixed mounting bracket.

i have a CAI setup with the stock airbox on my car - a pipe leading goign from the front of hte car into the airbox... i have put a funnel at the front end to maximise ram air

i don't have one up here, but he should have one down there. we don't have many good shops up here, but we do have one of the highest rating autobarn in australia here though, so that helps when it comes to getting parts. they know what they are talking about. the new owner has owned a few skylines and other imports so he has started stocking heaps of bits for them, like intake plenums, turbos and intercoolers.

anyone know where to get a cheap bellmouth like in that pic, i know GCG have them,and HKS make them for thiers turbos, but the cost is ridiculous.

then make up a custom flexi pipe the std location...

i have everything else, just need a bellmouth with a 100mm hole.

autobarn or ebay. it won't be a good one, just a cheap and nasty one but you might be able to put a better pod in it.

K&N sell that setup for about $260, We have had a alluminium metal spinner make some for us to suit a 3" by 6" pod filter. We have had him modify it to suit jap cars with air flow meters. Look good and work very well and are legal. Ill attach some pics of one fitted to a SR20 in a 1200 ute. We sell these for $180.

There is an old trick for this =

Get a piece of PVC tube with the diameter you want, aheat gun and a funnel

Place the PVC pipe upwards, heat the end with the heat gun and use the funnel to push down on the pipe which now hot, will mould to that shape giving you effectively a bell mouth. Very cheap and from the results, just as effective and apparently makes a big difference!

Or if you wanted to get really tricky you could hunt around and borrow several different funnels and carry out the procedure afew times gradually increasing the funnel size to give you a smooth curve = True bellmouth

hehehe thats a pretty good trick, only thing is that the bellmouth will be visible and i dont think pvc will cut it.. might look into it anyway
