Rb26 Into Pathfinder

Hi SAU masses, great forum, I've been lurking for a few weeks learning etc, great to see a forum thats not over run by smack talk.

I want to do some thing a little different to my pathfinder & I'm after some opinions & advice, specifically work shops in Brisbane that can do engine conversions & engineers certificates etc.

I have an 01 pathfinder thats crying out for a Turbo motor, I want to drop it a bit, run it on a set of 20" wheels & tyres paint it black (Allah the escalades in the USA) & I wanted to put a turbo motor in it, or super charge the 3.3

As this is a heavy car I'm not chasing ridiculous 1/4 mile times but I would be happy to get it into the low 13s

Any constructive thoughts or advice is appreciated

Not to be rude or sound negative mate, but I wouldnt think the 26 or any of the rb range would generate enough torque to lug it around. Whats a pathfinder weigh these days? Around 2t-2.2t. Thats alot of weight, closest thing with enough stroke would be rb30 combo.

What will you do with the gearbox and diff ratios for speed? For a low 13 sec pass i believe you need to be crossing around 110mph, thereabouts. Is that right???

It would certainly be an interesting challenge, but there are so many things going against it working out. I would go for the supercharging option as it would probably be easier, or turbocharge it. Just my 50 cents worth.

agreed, i think you would sacrifice some serious torque the deisel makes for some higher 4wkw or rwkw. its been done before (similar swaps so its not impossible)

i was looking at this before, but i wasn't sure if they are diesel or petrol so i stopped looking lol

turbo charging a diesel engine is VERY easy, just need more fuel pressure and a turbo thats it really

easy get kits for them for around $2500 to $3500

just had this done to our 80 series Landcruiser..

If you want to remain "true to the marque", what about dropping in a VH45 V8? If you really have some spare coin and time, you may find that the Pathfinder will also have enough room to squeeze in twin terbs?

Just looked up an article in Autospeed and quote:

The VK56DE employs a massive 98mm bore and 92mm stroke for a total displacement of 5552cc. This engine is built in the US and, as far as we’re aware, is not sold outside of the country. Fitted to the ’04 Nissan Pathfinder Armada and Titan pick-up, this engine makes 305 bhp (227kW) at a low 4900 rpm and more than 500Nm of torque at 3600 rpm. In the Infiniti QF56 SUV it makes an extra 10 bhp (7kW).

I wouldn't be suprised if this is a straight "bolt in" arrangement! Only thing is you would need to source the parts from the US, however cost wise it may not be such a bad proposition.

Great idea, go the vh45 and let me knwo if it fits....I am putting one in the navara in the next few months so you can go first, Im pretty sure navar and pathfinder have the same size engine bay

rb26 is no good, not enough torque it would be a pain in a heavy car, and you may have space problems since it is a straight 6 not v6

Am I right in thinking that being a 4wd the drive train would be strong enough,

I like the way you think, supercharged this would be getting close to the mark I reckon.

I can make u a RB34 if you are interested.... but the VH45 V8 sounds like a good idea.

I can re sleave and bore it out to a 4" bore and make a VH50 if you wanted some grunt, been done before.

That would get it off its ars!!!

CAPA in WA did a Boss 260 5.4L Ford V8 + supercharged into a Ford Territory, and that runs 13 flat.

I am not sure about the V8 metioned before, but something like a Holden LS1 rebuilt with a head/cam package and a PD blower would create plenty of torque, probably enough for 13 sec passes if built right.

You are going into unchartered territory with a conversion like that though, expect plenty of extra $$ for custom crossmembers, bellhousing, blah blah blah...

Although if the specs in Post #9 are accurate, then the RB25 & RB26 produce more torque than the standard motor anyway.

they may make more peak torque but it is @ much higher revs, which is fine in a car you are going to rev out all the time....nto much point trying that in a pathfinder it would be a bastard to drive at low revs.

I'm sure you will find the driveline is pretty strong, the navara/pathfinder driveline is tough, rear axle conversion to other cars is common for a stronger rear end

Someone also (before for did a production model) slapped a turbo on to the inline 6 and got it in to the high 11s from memory. That said 4L is a whole lot more than 2.6l or even 3l.

My question is, why does the thing weigh so much. Is it all the motor or what? Can some stuff be stripped out? Because if you go more power with less weight (btw 20inch anything will slow it down a LOT) I think it would be quite achevable.

well money must not be an issue, judging by the mods being done, 20"wheels, engine convo, and paint job. i would go for the v8. it wouldnt have to be a VH45, but any v8 really would do. it would be a case of finding something that is going to fit with the least amount of problems (VH45 would probably be be easiest to fit). might be worth going to a 4x4 meeting at an offroad park to see what sort of motor setups people have got. i know that you are wanting it for street use, but it would give you a starting block. there might be some 4x4 specialists there that could tell you off what they have done, or what they have heard of being done.

another option i thought of whould be a turbo diesel patrol motor. there are guys getting big ponies out of them. one was at a local dyno day and pulled 380hp (280kw). admittedly he was running about 22psi boost.

just did a quick calculation on a e.t. calculator, to run a 13.5 second 1/4 in a 2335kg car you would need about 410hp.

just to stop anyone saying that is rubbish, i put in the weight of a skyline and a hp figure of 190rwhp and it came out with an e.t. of 14.7 seconds, which isn't far off what the stock figure is claimed at.

it is only a rough guide, but would give you a ball park figure.

Get an LS7 crate motor from the USA. That will get it moving. If you really feel like you want to go nuts, add some boost via a twin turbo setup (although I think the LS7 runs about 11:1 compression). 13s? Ha! How does an 11 sec fourby sound? Make sure you pay your life insurance up though.

we got some 4B nuts round town. its funny watching short wheel base patrols pop the front wheels up when they chirp gears. my mate has a little suzuki 4B and if he gives the steering wheel a reef while chirping 2nd it pops the inside wheel up about 6 inches. its the funniest thing to watch cause he has 6" shackles under it and the motor is gutless as buggery but to see it do that is a laugh.

and i've never felt torque steer from a rear wheel drive car till i drove that thing. seems to go where ever it likes even on a smooth road, even with no acceleration.
