I am looking at replacing my Nismo twin plate on my R33 GTR.

I am tossing up between the OS Giken & Exeedy twin plates. I am favouring the OS Giken, as I've heard the Exeedy is noisy, suffering from a lot of driveline chatter - not too different from my Nismo clutch at the moment.

I've heard good things from both clutchs - never driven a car with either thou. Speaking to people - Croyden recommends OS Giken (I think there also a dealer of OSG) & Advan suggests Exeedy.

My car is a daily dirver. The clutch has to be good in traffic, & it also needs to bite like a pitbull on steriods when it needs to. My GTR puts out 318Kw at the wheels.

What clutch do you suggest & why?

I have a Jim Berry clutch (I believe it's a standard clutch rebuilt by jim - unsure) and have over 300rwkw. The clutch drives extremely easy in start stop traffic, no shutter and never once stalled the car. However, if I load up the clutch and dump it the thing bites like a bitch (i'm pretty sure it cost under $1k too).

Extremely happy.

os gikken STR twin plate, 600hp rated. Reason a great all round clutch, quiet, not too hard on your gear box, last longer than most.

Still got an os gikken tripple in mine and still going strong after years and years of abuse so brand is good.

i have an OS twin. it's the more agressive, non-sprung centre type so it's not particularly friendly to drive. personally i love it, but if you dont like a little bit of hard bite and need to drive it a lot, every day then it may not be for you. The sprung centre version is probably a bit more friendly, but is not so well suited for track or drag use.

Between Exedy and OS Giken, definitely OS Giken~ Other clutches u could consider are Ogura and ATS...i'm currently running a OS triple and i love it, its not that hard to drive with even on the streets...I've used an OS twin as well...definitely OS over Exedy.

I'm going to throw a spanner in the works and say that if you want a twin plate, go for a nismo copper mix.

I have the 780ps model with the nismo large slave and it feels almost like a stock clutch. The 640ps(??) model feels even nicer to drive on. Also, they have a single hub that drives the two disks which makes them quiet and easy to line up.

Great all around clutch and very light pedal for a twin plate !! ( No chance of breaking the spot welds on the clutch pedal box ). Get from Ben Ellis at Otomoto ( or other places like Just Jap etc ) for $2K which includes EVERYTHING needed to install.

Lot of peeps on SAU use Jim Berry clutches though with no complaints, and it's a much cheaper option. :)

I run an OS twin plate (unsure of model) and absolutely love it. I'm in the process of having it rebuilt at the moment due to hairline fractures in the clutch plates.

I find it good to drive. It is heavy, and doesn't like to be slipped, but it's worth it for me as it grips like nothing else when you're giving it to it. I used it as a daily for about a year with no issues.

i ran an os before i did the gearbox change,

and i run one now, i think they are great. the old one would take very hard launches without any signs of slipping.

the new one is yet to be tested, but i tell you now i need to go to the gym to build my left leg up.

nismo large slave? it this the slave cylender for the clutch pedal... as this has always been an idea running through my head, so you could have a twin or triple thats as light on the pedal as a stock clutch, but i've never actually heard of anyone doing this, let alone companies making upgraded cylenders.

i've never really driven anything with a twin or triple in it (only sat in cars with em, so i know how heavy they can get) how hard do they bite compared to normal clutches while engaging during normal driving? i'd imagine they would be pretty smooth as opposed to sumthin like a button or puck style clutch

I just got my GTR back today with the new clutch, thanks to jim berry. button clutch with a carbonics plate, gonna take me a day or two to get use to it, but seems good. bites very hard under load... much more fun to be had now...........

i heard jim was good so trusted what people have said, see how it goes.....

I would never use a button or puck clutch...my mate has one in his supra TT and it's a killer to driver with...once u go with a twin or triple, the bite difference is enough fer u to tell yerself, "I never want a heavy duty or single plate clutch ever again!" :dry:

^ agreed. It took me about 2-3 days to get used to it but now can't go back to a single plate or non twin/triple plate clutch. It's just a better drive when driving. It is shithouse for traffic though. If it's a daily driver in peak hour you'll get used to it in no time, but the first time in it is the worst.

Thanks for all the advice. It’s good to hear from people that drive on these clutch’s.

I’ll only be considering an twin-plate (at least) – thou with some of the favourable comments on triples they may be worth considering.

I’ll think I’ll go for the OS item, the STR in 600Hp guise, about $2,500 with the pull-push converter kit. But I’ll still give Jim in QLD a call too.

We have a exceedy havent heard any noise yet they are good but havent tried the OS but heard alot of good things about them we pick ares up cause it was there at the time we needed it and going for a good price. But they are hard in traffic but once you get use to it its ok

when you ring jim he'll tell you the twins are just rubbish in 'standard' guise

give you some stats: the milennium motorsports supra runs a big single plate clutch (built by jim) also the subzero soarer runs a big single (again built by jim)

this tells you that u dont need to go to a twin plate, or tripple and still gives a nice 'light' pedal feel and is great to drive in traffic

also you'd only be looking at $1200 if you buy one from jim

P.S make sure u have 30mins spare when u decide to call jim, he likes to chat lol

yeah its hard in traffic........... but i'll get use to it only had it a week now, feels weird still.

i say each to there own though, if ya want twin or triple plate go for it. Jim told me my clutch will be able to hold $hitloads more power than i got, so guess now its time to give it more power......... goodluck no matter which way you go.
