Howie
Hi Guys, In order to reregister my car in SA i have to remove the turbo timer in it's entirety. So can you tell me if i'm on the right track. It's not my car yet, so I don't want to do something that would cause the car not to start anymore. Do I just disconnect the looms indicated in orange below? How about the vacuum tube indicated in red? Does it need to be plugged up after it's been disconnected? Thanks, for all your help! Mr Italy!
If you can just hide it up under the steering bit, under the dash. Make sure its turned off tho haha, dont wanna turn the car off while at the inspection and have it stay on for 2 mins Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/120577-plz-help-removing-turbo-timer-for-inspection-pics/#findComment-2222099 Share on other sites
Howie
Nah they won't go for that. Other guys in SA tried hiding it and RTA pulled it out and kept it. Quinny
What is their problem with turbo timers? You need to let a turbo car cool down for a couple of minutes, what difference does it make if the key is in the ignition when it is running or not? I would like to see them get my turbo timer out. Mine is incorporated as part of the alarm system. Husky33
Turbo timers aren't illegal to have....they are just illegal to use if you are away from you're car. They can get you for having one. Howie
I know it's pretty silly ain't it, but I guess they have their reasons. The RTA inspector told me, NO BOV's that vent to atmo, NO boost controllers, NO turbo timers. They're really cracking down on that right now in SA. So can anyone tell me if what I suggested above would work? mad082
it is illegal to be more than 2 meters from any car when it is parked if the engine is still running. so even if you drive an old shitter and forget yur wallet and park on the street while you run inside to get it, if the car is running you can get booked. kind of makes sense though. if the car is running and it somehow got knocked into gear it could end up parked in someones lounge room. yeah just unplug the looms and tape them up somewhere out of the way with black electrical tape. and you will have to block the vacuum hose. just kink it then zip-tie it to itself to keep it kinked and again, tape it somewhere where it is very hard to see. Tangles
If you can just hide it up under the steering bit, under the dash. Make sure its turned off tho haha, dont wanna turn the car off while at the inspection and have it stay on for 2 mins Thats where mine was (and still is). I did exactly that - turned it off and it wasnt a problem. Its still off now, I think they are dangerous. But I dont mind it being wired up still...... If you are bringing a car into SA that has previously been registered interstate (like I did) you dont need to go to Regency, can go to Sturt Rd station on Tuesdays or Thursdays 9am-3pm, they check for engine / vin numbers etc. and all other bits in the engine bay. Fry_33
Do as mad says. If the car doesn't start without the turbo timer though you'll have to find out which wires coming out of the turbo timer provide power to let you car start. Then you'll have connect that wire to an ignition wire going to the turbo timer.. or something like that. I would say that its part of the bigger plug, the smaller plug looks like it is for the handbrake cut out.. Good luck with it Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/120577-plz-help-removing-turbo-timer-for-inspection-pics/#findComment-2222381 Share on other sites

mad082
i had mine disconnected and the car started so should be all good, but might be wired differently to mine. i actually have mine down in behind the kick panel on the trans tunnel cause the doubl sided tape holding in place keeps coming off so i just stuffed it in there till i get time to relocate it. just hope it doesn't cook it, but i don't drive it much and usually not for that long. Howie
Thanks for all the input guys... much appreciated. Tangles, I was asked if i lived 40km's from the CBD by TransportSA, that being the case i've been told that I have to goto regency rather than a police station. Think i also read that on the TSA website. Mad082, yeah looking at the diagram you would think that's the case right? The TT just sends a kill signal back and it switches off? Or if fry is correct, then one of the line's is working as a switch? which case I should just bridge it again once the TT is removed? edit: added image. What's the diff between a DTT-X and a DTT? I know the FATT doesn't display boost and therefore doesn't have the vacuum. I'll give it a go when the car arrives in ADL. Btw, I've read somewhere that the battery should be disconnected when installing. I'm guessing that's not necessary here because there's not any splicing going on right? Or is it always better to be safe than sorry? In the ACT ive had three cars inspected, all with atmo BOV's, intercoolers, exhausts etc and all have passed first go. It has been a while since the last time https://www.catalogueau.com/big-w/ was available. Fry_33
I just found this webpage. http://www.240sx.org/links/installs/blitz/tt/index.htm Assuming you have this same one then it looks like the whole turbo timer just taps into everything, ie no cutting and re-routing. Therefore you should be able to just unplug it and crimp and cable tie the vacc hose.
