so the other day after a major tyer warming session, as i was driving home id drive off for a bit and when i changed gear i could here a slitgh chatter just befor it grabs, but it only starts now and then, do day it was doing it real loud, so i got a mate to drive the car past me and with the clutch in you can hear click chatter and its really noticble from the rear end of the car, i jacked up the rear and when i turnd the wheels the other one turned the same way, shouldnt it turn the other way with a lsd? What else could it be?

standard crappy bogwarner

well, both wheels should turn the same way, so thats a good start. borg warners are always noisy, althought htis noise i dont often here of.. just thrash it till it blows up and replace it with an aftermarket diff/weld it up, ether that or ring a diff specialist, they should have som indication of what it might be

You sure its the diff and not the gearbox which is making the noise?

see, im not sure, and im damn hoping its not the gearbox, as its only around 30,000kms old and its a r34GTT item, recently did the oil with blue redline gear when i did the clutch..

the noise only seems to come on after a quick thrash, it sounds like when the clutch fan hits the intercooler piping, if anyone has heard that noise befor..

It only comes on when the clutch grabs and you dont allerate, if you hit the gas the noise goes away, but say youre slowing down and just pop it into gear and let that slow you down the noise will come and stay untill you press the clutch, or hit the gas..

if you get what i mean..

wierd. the borgs that were on their way out that i've heard have all made metallic noises when turning, or taking off, going round slow corners etc. still sounds like diff though. can you jack it up, run the car in gear, rev it then back off and see if the noise happens then?

+ specs on car dude.

if its happening when ur slowing down etc, maybe something with the crown and pinion, like when u accelerate, the gears mate nice and normal, when u back off, and the car is being slowed by the 'box, the stress might be on the opposite face on the teeth on the crown wheel... : if that makes sense... i dont know if thats really logical, its something that just came to me then...

other than that, have u checked ur oil levels in the diff, how old is the oil?

somebody said before about the R200 not borg warner thing, im assuming u transplanted the rb25 into a R31.

in your avatar it says you got a RB25 coupe, the coupes don't have a borg warner diff they have a R200 longnose diff or is this a different car?

hey bud, nah this isnt my coupe, this is in my 25powerd 4door slio.

Hey that makes sense, and im hoping thats what it is lol, Well i had a look under and the diff has a hole lotta fresh oil around it which made me smile as im hoping its the diff not the box..

But this only happens when i give it a slight gun..

Yeh this is in my 4door R31, not the coupe, coupe has a R200, this 4door beast has a bog warner, pushing around 200rwkw, befor hand it was taking around 80rwkw with the rb30e lol

yeah i was thinking what VB said too, but I couldnt really explain it like that.

i got a reco'ed lsd centre put in my single spinner for $500 for a price guide.

let us know how you go man. mines doing 233rwkw through the diff now and it seems good.

nate give us some specs on your cars dude. youve got 2 x 25'ed 31s???

yeah as VB said backlash between the crown wheel and pinion it is a common thing with the BW78, they also whine like a bitch before they start to open wheel. probably needs a good shim, oil and gasket replaced and you may need the side gears replaced all up should cost $500-$600. if you are going to be doing drift, drag or track work then a reshim would be pointless as the diff won't last very long at all, your options are a mini spool ($100+fitting) or a Kaaz 1.5 or 2 way LSD ($1500+fitting)

    • I know you don't want to hear this comment, but I can't not say it.  I just can't see 200kw being worth the time and effort. Its like guys with NA cars, putting in headers/exhaust/tune for a massive 20% jump in power. Great, the slow car is still slow and you're down $10,000.  My vote is leave it NA or price in a gearbox upgrade and shoot for at least 300KW, preferably 350KW+.  Now you have a NC that will try to kill you from time to time and will be exciting to drive
    • Ah yep. The main message I want to pass on is, try not to get scared of ghosts when thinking about knock/knock detection.  What I mean is, healthy engines make noise. Knock is also noise. Your knock sensor and ECU combo are trying to determine bad noise from good noise based on how loud the noise is. The factory knock sensors and ECU are not good at doing this.  Modern ECU's are pretty decent at it, however I'd still say that you would want to verify that if your ECU says it's knock, that you actually listen to it and confirm that it is correct.  Are you familiar with the plex knock monitor?  https://www.plex-tuning.com/products/plex-knock-monitor-v3/ I expect you're the type of person that would be very keen to play with something like this. It is great knock detection and you can pop some headphones on and listen to what's going on.  Knock that you've deliberately induced in low load low RPM areas is not really putting anything at risk and is a great tuning/learning/verification tool.  I just thought this was worth mentioning based on the way you were talking about setting up a base map and the Haltech base map settings. There are better ways to spend your time then chasing ghosts and worrying about detonation in scenarios that it is crazy unlikely to encounter it.  I was also wondering, what ECU are you planning to get? Will it be long til you pick it up?
