evil_weevil
Hey guys, Just wondering, when your intercooler pipe comes off while giving it a bit....can it cause much damage to engine/turbo/anything?? mine came off this evening, and I have never experienced it, and as I am kind of new to turbo performance, I guess you could say Im a bit nervous incase there could be damage. Morgs who was there, says these things happen! and are normally all good, just a time hassle to get it back on. My car has only cat back, pod and a turbotech boost controller running 9psi - could this boost controller have caused the blow out? Say a spike somewhere? Ive taken it off and put the stock part back on just for now. Cheers guys, Chris Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/120872-intercooler-pipes-blow-off/ Share on other sites
GTRgeoff
Sounds like you either don't have a good enough rolled edge/retainer on the metal pipe or your clamps were either not tight enough or not up to the job. When the exhaust is hot you could end up with a lot of flame out the exhaust like I did, melting the rear bumper, but you have to drive a little way for that anyway. Otherwise you could just clog up your plugs with carbon but no real damage will occur if you stop pretty soon after blowing the hose. evil_weevil
GTRgeoff - thanks for the reply mate! Basically I pulled into the first side street as the engine shut down, no air getting in, stalled basically. So fingers crossed its all good! Beer Baron
do you have an aftermarket boost gauge? Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/120872-intercooler-pipes-blow-off/#findComment-2228013 Share on other sites
evil_weevil
Beer Baron - yep - from what I could see it was just under 9psi when it happened, but before I didnt see if it spiked or not! So im pretty silly that way Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/120872-intercooler-pipes-blow-off/#findComment-2228072 Share on other sites
Duncan
meh don't worry it happens all the time, will probably stall pretty quickly because afm is seeing heaps of air but very little gets to the engine.. the biggest pain is getting to the lower ones under the front bar. Some fixes: Bigger lip on the end of the cooler pipes New cooler hoses, preferably silicon which don't baloon out under boost Proper truck style clamps instead of those crappy screw type ones that Nissan gave us. GTAAAH
Yeh ive had the same thing happen about 4 or 5 times still have leaking problems to. Nissan clamps suck. None of the hoses justjap gave have come off but the nissan ones will need tightening using a spanner not a screwdriver. Also i noticed that my silicon hoses went softer pretty quick so after a week or 2 u might wana retighten. About 5 of mine were loose after the first week but now they seem ok. evil_weevil
well, bit of a pickle again.... this evening, noticed he car was spooling louder and earlier (I took the turbotech b/c off, so stock boost now) came onto main road, 1st gear, changed at 2.5k, into 2nd, went to bout 3-4k and the motor shut down again, spooled really loud this time. Something must be up with one of the rubber joints yeah? I cant see any splits, could be underneath where I cant see? A friend thought maybe theres an electrical fault, i.e. a sensor is stuffed? any ideas guys? I can drive the car, but have to keep it off boost, which is likechanging at 1k revs!! Not good Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/120872-intercooler-pipes-blow-off/#findComment-2229730 Share on other sites
hayden49
hhhm.... thats odd, when i fitted my cooler yesertday i noticed that there is throttle lag when you drive normally but when you punch it you dont notice anything. my car screams now from turbo spool and induction noise but i dont think its a bad thing. although my car does now flutter heaps, sounds like wastegate flutter to me. evil_weevil
hmm...apparently everything seems fine. My mechanic tookitfor a drive and said nothing went wrong, boosted well, couldnt get it to happen! he even sprayed some carby cleaner over the pipes, gave the car a rev, and the carby cleaner didnt get sucked in, hence no leaks anywhere...but its still got a louder, higher pitched whistle than before. really weird. Green_s13
sounds like the manifold to turbo gasket has gone or you have a loose elbow coming off the turbo. hayden49
yeah the turbo whistle has gone crazy since i did my install, i just put it down to the different sound of air going through the longer pipes or somthing. Michael_1882
I wouldn't worry, i helped install a front mount on my mates supra and was boost at liek 18psi when one of the hoses blew off. The car stalled and the lights even went out but all was good jsut some P's and Q's on the side of teh raod at night trying to get the F#&$^er back on!
