my battery keeps going flat... I had a bit of a search bout alternators and what not and did some tests with the ol multimeter... im just not sure wat the results mean :laugh: Also i had the battery replaced about a yr ago.. for one of those racv ones... but evan with the new one it would go flat if u just sat in the car for like 30-45 mins...

anyways so i jumpstarted the car to get her going just now.. and hooked up the multimeter to alternator.. it sat on a constant 14.5v.

Then i slapped it on the battery in the boot and that was also showing 14.5 or so (as was the pfc hand controller)

so yeah... what does that mean ;) ??

Battery has had its day most likely. Mine usually sticks on 13.8v but 14.5v is within limits. I.e. your alternator is ok

the battery that you got might have been sitting there for a while before you bought it. cold weather is the true test of how good a battery is. if the alternator is cactus then the battery would lose power as you drive from using the brake lights, indicators etc. i'd go and buy a century battery. that way you have the 3 year warranty or however long it is.

When you test the voltage output of the alternator, you are presumably testing at idle. Try raising revs to, say , 2000 and measure output.

It should remain the same voltage (ie around 14V). If it increases, then the alternator is kaput - it is overcharging the battery, and overcharged batteries don't hold charge.

I always thought that if you raised the revs and the voltage didn't increase then your alternator is gone.

ie. If you start the car and it stays at 12, and if you rev the car and it stays at 12, then the alternator isn't working at all.

As blind_elk said, when you rev it should stay the same.

If it goes up then it's overcharging your battery, which is bad.

ok well im gonna buy another battery..

just out of curiosity tho.. cause i dont understand the hole battery/alternator thing... atm my battery is at 11.x volts and it wont start... but somebody else was telling me there battery is also 11.x volts when the engine isnt running... so like.. why the hell wont my start if its the same as other ppls :dry: ???

I woulda thought if the battery was flat it'd be below 11.. or woteva the normal voltage is when the cars not running.. ??

a fully charged battery should show 13.2 volts, engine not running and no load(6 cells times 2.2volts per cell)

truth is you will rarely see that. Start your car, and at the battery you are looking for @ 13.8 - 14.5 volts at approx 2000rpm, if it reaches 15 volts or higher it is being overcharged, less than 13.0 volts poss crook alternator or possibly voltage drop between the alternator and battery(bad wiring). Take your car to an Auto Electrician and ask them to load test your battery.

The other possibility is that something is draining your battery when the car and all accesories are tuned off, eg boot light staying on, glovebox light staying on, relay drawing power etc.

Dont just go and by a battery add hoc, it may be a waste of money.

anyone know what the settings are on multimeters to check the AMPs drain on a battery while the cars are off..

trying to remember but cant, also the points on the battery and earth to check this would be helpful too.

Don't buy anything until you are certain what the problem is. There are a various tests you can do to see if the alternator is failing or not. Just do a few google searches. You're mainly interested in the impedence/resistance between a few particular points.

Also: The battery will show whatever voltage what battery is supposed to output unless you put a load on it. A multimeter won't do much in determining that, unless it has a dummy load also.

Set the multimeter to amps dc, start at around a 10 amp range, disconnect the neg battery terminal and put one lead of meter to neg batt terminal and the other to the battery lead(the one you disconnected). With doors closed everything off you should have less than .2 of an amp drain. DO NOT try and start the vehicle or turn on any high load items whilst doing this test.

well i noticed my racv battery had a 2 yr warranty.. so i got em to come round and replace it for free :) they did some tests and rekon its def the battery... (allthough when my engine blew up they rekon it was just out of petrol :P)

anyways ive got another concern though. How much cranking power thingy (or woteva its called) should a battery for a skyline have ??

I noticed mine is only 370 which doesnt realy sound like a lot.. ??

I dont have have a big audio setup or anything though... pretty much just the head unit.

370 should be ok. Little on the low side. I think the one I replaced was 270cca..so I think you have bigger than the stock one..

If youre not runing a big system I reckon it should be ok for a couple of years or so. Just dont leave your lights on or parkers for too long with the engine off.

exactly what i was after :(

mine will be a huge drain though :)

550cca battery and too low to crank the engine after 2 days

    • Maf is a question mark but TPS  I have set at 0.47, the fact that I’m getting proper voltage range out of it with the key on leads me to believe it’s functioning properly. I’m getting proper voltages on basically everything. I still need to look up voltage ranges for z32 maf and test that 
    • Honestly no not at all, but it’s a very basic tune, it’s stock injectors q45 tps and z32 maf. Other than that it’s a completely stock base map. The file is from nistune and from my understanding if it was tune related I would be able to unplug maf and tps and it would still start even if it was a really shitty start. I have tried starting it with coolant temp, maf, and tps unplugged none of those 3 togethor or individually changes anything

    • What does it look like with highway driving? And yes, I had a similar thought as Duncan. It looks quite similar in my Stagea and I have made myself accept it as normal. Might have to look into it some day   Highway gets as low as 10l/100km on my end so I'm not as worried about it being a mechanical issue. More likely just the tune on the haltech.
    • While I was waiting for the new parts to come in for the charge pipe and radiator I decided to do some turbo modification. The drive pressure (exhaust backpressure) was a lot higher that I thought it should be. For 32lbs of boost drive was 55lbs. The turbine housing is a 1.10AR and my turbo builder has suggested to go to a 1.25AR. To test if a larger AR would do anything to reduce drive pressure AND not spend any money I decided to hog out the divider in my current housing. I removed it from the inlet and the whole way through the housing.  After reassembly and testing it doesn't look like this modification did anything for reducing drive pressure or requiring more fuel (making more power). Oh well, it was worth a shot. We'll get some data at the track if it makes it past the 60ft. I also machined a $7 shift knob off Amazon to fit my Stillway shifter since I didn't like the Stillway shift knob. Next on the list was the radiator replacement and fabrication of a new intercooler tube that had no silicon coupler. No pictures of this - I was short on time each night after work to get this done and didn't stop to take pictures.  Next was to get the clutch disks out and replaced. Previously when installing the dogbox I had ordered a set of the same sintered iron disks I had been running because I switched to the 26-spline input shaft. I thought it was odd that they didn't have any markings or brand name on them like all my old disks had but installed them anyway. At the track I could not get the clutch to lock up using my normal strategies. After two track nights I reached out to the clutch manufacturer and ask their thoughts. They said they had to switch the material out because they were having trouble getting the original material and that this new material would not take to being slipped very well.  So out with the first set of 26-spline disks and in with the correct material 26-spline disks. While I had the trans out I added an inspection/service hole. I've wanted one of these for a while. Now I can have a look at things and change the front cover shimming when needed (clutch wear). I hustled and got the clutch change done in a few hours on a Saturday. Hopped in the car and drove home. On the way home I did a 1-3 pull. When shifting from 2nd to 3rd the core plug in the back of the cylinder head popped out and dumped all the coolant. Thankfully I was only 30 seconds from home and coasted it there. Datalog showed nothing unusual and 2.5psi of coolant pressure. That plug has been in there since 1992 but I guess it worked its way out. Pulled the trans AGAIN and replaced the plug, JB welded it in, and made a brace. Also deleted the head drain I had added in during the bearing issue fiasco.  I am currently changing my boost control plumbing to make it cleaner. After that is done I'll make another attempt at getting past the 60.
