How much difference does it really make, has anyone in the same city moved suburbs and had a big jump?

Yep. ;) Promise you that. You can move across the road and it will make a huge difference if it is a dif postcode.

But for a freaking massive difference in premium, but not necassarily risk, you could move from Brisbane CBD with the risk (car) parked on the street to Sydney suburbs or even Canberra suburbs parked in a garage with the premium going up hugely.

The postcode change in premuim is more due to economic conditions and market expectations than actual risk.

Hi all, I'm planning to get a 34gtr next yr and i'm currently doing research for all the expenses that will incur. i've done up an excel sheet for all cost cept for insurance and rego. i'm from singapore, 25 this yr with a clean driving history, however, my license was only converted this year after i got my PR. i have been staying in brisbane for the past 2.5years with postal code 4122, car will be garaged, driven mostly on fri/sat/sun as i'm working during wkdays and dont wanna risk parking outside, working as an engineer. never own a car in australia but driven (friend's). any help will be much appreciated.

Justcars or young and cool your best option..

young and cool joined up with famous so there the same thing now

im having trouble getting in contact with famous car insurance? they havn't responded from the online quote i did so i just did another and ill call them tomorrow and see what the go is

Josh

I went through GIO's new custom car insurance section today and got my policy for $1.7k (R33 GTR, 24 yr old, $32k agreed value). Justcars, in comparison, were $2.2k.

The link to contact them is here: http://www.gio.com.au/gio/promotion/custom...ance_email.html

Highly recommended!

Okay, im looking at an R34 gt-t sedan. I'm 21yrs old. Have never made a claim or anything like that. I live on the Gold Coast. Just car quoted me $2,200!

I did an online quote about 3 months ago and the exact same details got me a quote of $1,600?

Is there anyone else in QLD other than just cars who will cover skylines??

Dont bother with them mate.

I had a policy with FCCI which i wanted to cancel. As per polciy booklet i sent them a signed letter outlining the cancellation. Three weeks pass and i wonder why i havnt heard from them. So i call them up and a message plays informing me Young & Cool has merged with FCCI, ok thats all cool. I explain to the operator about my letter and she says "...oh it probably got lost we moved to NSW from Perth" even though their website at this stage still had their WA postal address and they made no effort to inform policy holders of the change.

So she gives me a number of some guy to call to cancel, i send him the letter again. Two weeks pass i call and he sais he never recieved my email . So i sent it again and then a week later i get a confirmation saying my policy cancelled. Great i think, then i read on - oh if you want the outstanding amount of your premium refunded contact this guy (no numbers or address just a bigpond email address). So I am now in the process of chasing this guy down for my refund!

Seriously the most un-professional business i have ever had to deal with...

Ryno now does classic cars only, not performance jap cars, with the exception of current insuree's

I can confirm this. Ryno are cancelling my policy as of the 17th of Jan for this reason. Oh well, it was good while it lasted.

Thats a shame,

I remember when they first started, they were open to most performance cars and alot of people on different car forums talked them up and it seemed they offered good premiums. A year later, now look - got the business/money and then ran by the looks of it

A lot of these underwritten smaller companies start with low rates making a massive loss, develop a specialist clientel that they are happy with, and then stick with them. It makes business sense.

As some of you know I've had a tough time trying to find insurance after having had my license suspended for speeding and having a small at fault accident. One of the reasons I sold my Skyline was insurance and it's ridiciulous premiums.

The other day I called Famous Insurance and in a matter of minutes got the cheapest quote despite of my bad record. Today I went ahead with the policy and couldn't be happier.

Just to put things in perspective. I've called countless companies and they all either do not insure classic cars or I present too high a risk for them. I'm really sick of dealing with them and answering the same questions over and over again and hearing the same answers. The nearest quote I could find was $1090 with another classic car insurer which required me to get a valuation which costs over $100. Their excess was $500.

Famous on the other hand have offered me a premium of $600 with a basic excess of $200 and have insured me for the purchase amount (not market value like most other insurers wanted to). Following year the premium will drop to under $400 pending my driving record during the year.

Xxxx Xxxx who are meant to be lenient to high risk customers wanted to charge me around $2800 for market value which comes to $5800. Their excess was over $1000. Sure they are lenient but they should advertise the fact that they are also extortional. I had a third party property policy with them until today which cost me $693 with an excess of $1400!

Famous Insurance are an SAU endorsed company who offer our members a 10% discount or alternately will beat most quotes by 10%. Give them a call for a quote. You might be pleasently surprised.

George

Disclaimer: As any intelligent person would know, circumstances detirmine your premiums so what is expensive for me might be cheap in your case. SAU does not guarantee that Famous Insurance will offer you a policy.

  • 3 weeks later...

Just went through a few companies for quotes. Famous was the cheapest by about $350 (plus much cheaper excess!) than anyone else so far. Good to know they are are OK with mods too.

BTW I also asked about any discount for car club members and they said that they dont offer any discounts. Guess they have changed since 2003 when this thread started.

They also charge more for pay by the month.

I ended up getting a quote from Torque for $100 less than Famous' best quote, and they allow pay by the quarter at no extra cost. Plus NCB protection for life, free windscreen, etc.

Note, get a few quotes first then tell Torque your best quote. They should beat it!

anyone inerested in cheap insurance call HIA insurnace on 98087224 contact AVEDIS, mention my name Mirko and youl definatly get cheap insurance.

let me know your success stories, he will insure anycar.

thanks Mirko, talked to Avedis at HIA on Friday, he called me back today with the best quote, so I took it. 34yo, 2000 gtr V-spec 2, $64 000, 60% no claim, rating 1 ,Brisbane, 1 suspension in the last 3 years. $1730 full comp, $640 excess.

Shannons was ok, $1920, $650 excess, they would have been my next choice.

just cars was $1530 with $1900 excess and $2200 excess if stolen, what a shit quote!

famous was $1350 with $750 excess, they want a 3 point immobiliser installed and I dont want to wait around if I do make a claim, so I avoided them.

did you go with HIA simply because they were cheaper, or were the policy benefits as good as Shannons too?

    • Ok glad you clarified on the frenchy’s options , I was worried about if my oem hoses would fit the new compressor or not if I just bought the bracket/compressor kit ,  didn’t realize they also sold a larger full conversion kit. Hmm may just go oem in that case then to make it easy only because I plan to sell this car to upgrade to a 32 GTR or 34 GTT.
    • Right, here's a video of the basic operation at least.  This is what you can expect day to day when you turn the car on and it boots from standby.  The only thing from a media point of view I haven't gotten working is for it to autoplay plexamp when it turns on from standby (it works from cold boot) but that's more of a plexamp problem as it will autoplay other music players.  Also attached is my one stray cable.  It's part of the screen's wiring adapters but there's just nowhere for it to go in my car.  I've just now done a bit of research and found a matching port on a 2010-2014 head unit with BOSE.  Mine has no BOSE so that's that case pretty much closed I think.  Plugging in the Infiniti AC panel basically did nothing for me, so that's a dead end as well.  Next port of call is to mess with this CANBUS module and see what I can find from it.  I found this resource containing the DBC files for a 2010+ G37 : https://github.com/icecube45/Dash_InfinitiG37/blob/master/InfinitiG37.dbc I'll now have something to go from when I try to extract my CANBUS data so I can see if the HVAC Mode, Fan Speed, Temperature, etc. match and also the gear shifter position.  It's a pretty big assumption that it's just mismatched CAN signals but considering all the devices in the CAN network are talking to each other (AC can be fully adjusted just with no info on screen) it might be a safe one.  I will report back WhatsApp Video 2025-02-26 at 12.49.10.mp4
    • Thanks for that Paul.  Do you think if I posted a picture you'd be able to remember where it went?
    • Sorry Duncan, I didn't get a notification for the replies.  Thanks for responding!  It's a full Android device, but does allow you to use CarPlay/AA as well.  This is the one I bought from NaviRS on AliExpress: https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005006368602668.html?spm=a2g0o.order_list.order_list_main.111.59aa1802JDzQ0E - the 2K 8G-256G CAM variant but it seems to have gone up by £170 since I bought it!  My purchase was £307.14.   It's not the fastest thing in the world but performs perfectly adequately.  It stays on standby unless I disconnect the battery and let it power down, then it's just a fairly standard Android bootup time from cold.  The DSP Equaliser is very nice and made the standard stereo system sound pretty decent compared to the stock screen.  Perhaps I can take a video of it when I get a sec. It *allegedly* supports the reverse camera, but I'm yet to get that working.  It has options for reverse cam (a camera unit can be bought separately) or 360 cameras (also bought separately).  To be fair it doesn't seem to detect that the shifter was put into reverse but I'm working on a theory about this as well.  At the moment I'm going without which is a bit annoying considering the car is an absolute canal barge but so far I haven't caused any damage I'll grab a picture of the wire I'm missing later today when I can get outside.  My theory, by the by, is that not only is the head unit different, but the CANBUS network has different signals for the different years.  I think this because I have a spare AC panel from a newer Infiniti G37 (as opposed to my Nissan panel) which wouldn't control anything except the volume when I had it wired up with the stock system.  I'm going to throw it back in and see if the screen will respond to it.  I've just ordered an arduino CANBUS module so I can have a look at the signals going around the car and see if I can spot anything.  I'm thinking if I can work out what it's expecting vs what it's getting I might be able to translate and relay the signal back but so far just a theory anyway. I also found this on my travels, so far the only one that specifically matches my car: https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005002822934280.html?spm=a2g0s.imconversation.0.0.33433e5fgttovi If you look at the picture of the before, it has the card reader slot, and the picture of the head unit is exactly the same as the one pictured in my original post.  I asked if they sell the cables separately but sadly they won't.  I didn't want to just buy this one because it's a super old Android version and only dual core - likely slow as hell.
    • As above, you did refill the coolant and burp the system before running it again didn't you?
