Wat Do Epa Check For?

hi everyone

i dont know if this is the right section to post this but yea...

durring the week when i was driving to work in my R32 gts-t i got pulled over from the cops. (i wasnt doin anything bad and my car is completely stock part from the cat back Exhaust.) anyways they were lookin over my car trying to pin sumthing on me. anyways they said my Exhaust is to loud and ill have to goto the EPA to get it tested etc..

my question is if i put my Silencer in the cannon and use low octane fuel (91 RON or lower) will this pass the EPA Emissions tests? also the cop said if i put the Silencer in ill have to get it welded up. or should i just but a Standard 1"inch Muffler just for that day?

I reckon the 91ron or lower is not worth it cause you can cause some damage to your engine plus you will run richer aswell so hence make your chances of them pinning something on you even worse. The silencer would be fine the same cop wont be at the epa station so i believe it would be all good as i know people who have the bolted silencer and never had a prob.

Did the cop say you MUST GO TO EPA, or did he say a "licenced exhaust tester". Because if he is only giving you an EPA for noise then all you have to do is go down to the closest exhaust shop listed on the EPA noise letter and get it noise tested. And if you have to put a silencer in it MUST be welded in to pass, but sometimes if you know the guy some rules are bent :dry: .

IMO it's probably easier to swap to a stock exhaust for the test.

I also don't see how 91RON fuel is going to help with emissions.

chaning fuel does not alter emissions when the ECU is looking for over 100ron anyway

It'll be a test, just going to a licensed tester, not the EPA station itself.

Get it tested, see how loud it is

EPA is fun :(

belive it or not skylines run very low emitions

you'll pass emissions EASY

however noise is your problem...

bolting the silencer into the cannon is not good enough, when i failed noise at epa, i asked them if putting my silencer in there is good enough.. and they said no... only if it is completly welded in there.... and spot welding it a couple of times around the rim isnt good enough either!

you should be right... :)

no way.. skylines are tuned for japanese fuel (like 104oct) so its fine.. emmisions shouldnt be your worry.. your allowed 5% carbon monoxcide or what ever it was.. i had a screwed 02 sensor and still only blew 1.6%

... with sound just make a baffel plate with a few holes in it and jam it between one fo your flanges

they rev skylines upto 4800rpm at epa and it cant exceed 90db

Not a problem. You just go down to a licensed epa exhaust shop. They will do the test. When you pass they give you a certificate, they keep one copy and send it to the epa saying you passed. Thats it.

DO what ash advised me to do. Get a mufler made up that decreases the diameter and just with a normal muffler. Lowered my car from 111DB to 89DB to just pass. And when u get home. Chuck the cannon back on :(

      I made a little more progress last night and added some E85 safe fuel tank baffle foam in behind the stock cam cover baffle plate.  It still feels really wrong shoving foam inside the engine but apparently its fine based on it pretty much being the MINES/Hi-Octane RB26 cam baffle kit and the few posts here I have found of people doing it and the lack of posts saying the foam broke down and ruined the motor... Still plan to check it frequently though lol The last step for this round of oil control modifications I plan to make is to add some -12AN fittings to the cam covers and connect them to some (already existing luckily) -12AN fittings on the sump. Basically a sudo head drain/sump breather/pressure equaliser without having to remove the motor and do the one on the rear of the head. My plan is to add them to either the tops or the sides of the cam covers at the back. unless there is a compelling reason to have them at the front on the sides which i have seen a few times though they were all on RB26 cam covers from memory so that may be due to the stock breathers being on the back and the integral baffle being different ?

      from an old insurance company i was with (Budget Direct) I had someone roll back into me at the lights got them to pull over. Got a picture of thier licence with address, had a dash cam video and, thier phone number. But only had 3rd party on the shitbox i was driving. insurance did nothing, cops wouldn't do anything due to the value of the damage (under $3000) so i just had to suck it up and go to U Pull It.

      Small Update on the Exhaust Situation A 200-cell cat was a bit too expensive for now, so I had the exhaust shop fabricate a new exhaust from the cat to the rear and an exhaust tip. I went this route to avoid cutting into the original exhaust and keep it intact. It’s essentially straight-piped, and the sound is noticeably different. The exhaust tip came with a silencer, so if it gets too loud, I can easily install it to tone things down slightly. Right now, the car bangs and pops like crazy -- which I personally love. In the future, I might add a resonator or a 200-cell cat, as niZmO_Man suggested, but for now, I’m really happy with how it turned out.

      And that's a massive problem, because deadshits will deadshit and give you false details. At least in these days of mobile cameraphones, it is trivial to take photos of any ID they are carrying at the same time as the 300 photo extensive documentation of the state of the vehicles that I recommend even for minor incidents. And you get photos of the person's face, any visible tatoos, etc etc, while you're at it. Then you try to avoid mentioning that you're fully capable of making explosives of various power levels and will wreck their shit if you are forced to hunt them down.
