ok so ive been told that my bottom end is gone.

heres the details:

a) the car is still exactly the same as when i bought it (driveability and power wise)

b) the oil pressure seems to start at 0 but as soon as i hit boost, it lifts up to 1.8 and stays there.

c) the oil pressure does not drop below 1.8 unless i turn the car off.

d) nothing else has changed

e) there is a knocking sound when between 2000 - 3000 revs.

f) when an oil pressure test was done by cypher, it read a constant 0

what do you guys think...

a) should i just drive it till it dies

b) is there nothing wrong with it besides the gauge

c) should i buy a new engine straight away

i have an exam tomoro morning so yeh kinda wana know tonite

thanks, steve :D

If i were you i would be speaking to a mechanic. If you bottom end is dead then either borrow a car or buy a shitter untill you get your motor rebuilt or a engine change over.. Thats was i would do...

I own two cars for this reason

save for a rebuild or a new motor.

if you keep driving it, it'll eventually eat away at your crank till you have to get a new one, then you'll have to get that one machined bla bla bla.

dont drive it around till it dies... because when it does you'll be left without a leg to stand on.

rb20's come cheap these days.. ive seen one for around $1500 for a long motor (get a short motor if you can). + labour and you'll have your car within a weeks time depending on your mechanic.

if you get the long motor, you could always try sell your rb20 head for a few hundred.

Had EXACTLY this problem - drove it around for 6 mths as it came and went and still made good power, BUT, it cost me as posts above say.

Big ends 3&5 (i think had burnt to a crisp -totaly stuffed and crank scoured also so RODS & CRANK needed to be replaced.

Worse it was a AWD ( GTS4) RB20DET so harder to find.

Blind_Elk came to the rescue with his orig RB20DET as he put a Stagea RB25 AWD in his GTS4.

Turbine, Glenn, pulled the crank and rods from his motor and fitted to mine as my block and pistons were much better and less rego hassels.

Will be putting the rebuilt motor back in this weekend with luck :D

    • And....if that could be true for all R34 GTTs, then it might be good. But in reality it is not really any better than my standard instruction to "go out and have a look at it yourself, and wave a tape measure around" etc etc, because as soon as you have any adjustable arms, or coilovers with smaller diameter springs, or tyres that have any bulge that goes out further than the rim, etc etc, then the simple version of the information is still potentially misleading. Plus, nothing in this is static. Everything is moving. At the rear the wheels swing inward at the top as they go up, so the clearances on the inside change as the suspension is compressed. At the front it's even worse. And then you have the difference in absolute wheel position in the arch can move around more, or less, depending on how compliant the bushes are. If, like me, you have sphericals on the front caster rods (and on the FUCAs also, but these are probably less dominant when it comes to wheel position), then your wheel will swing forward/backward under loads, as well as up/down, as well as steering angle. You end up having the simple numbers with 17 caveats/footnotes for each.

    • Actually PowerFC is probably the easiest to get basic data from, it comes with a hand controller and display so you don't need to remember to pack a laptop every time you drive. It also has a PC based viewing/logging option if required. Nissan used consult on these because back in the mid 80s, ODB was just a glint in a standard's body's eyes.  They switched to OBD shape around 2000 (my 2001 Cima had OBD shaped but not OBD compliant port) With the standard ECU there is a cable and software available to give basic data too, I think it is called Nissan Data Scan or s
