well, the standard gtr rear diff is a 2 way mechanical so no parts needed for that

However....they are pretty loose from the factory, you can get them shimmed up tighter by any diff specialist so that you get that nice clunking sound.

ok you are off the mark a little with the questions. the GTR LSD is a 2 way mechanical LSD already.

shimming the diff puts some preload on things and has the diff acting earlier/harder (ie less torque required to make it lock up).

i'm not sure what's in a 34GTT but i would guess probably a crappy viscous LSD. in that case bin it.

minor thread hijack alert

What about the gts4... since its mostly gtr gear, does that include a mechanical diff (its a different ratio to both the gtr and the gtst), or a viscous?

I have read both... And with my vast amount of drift experience, I can say.... I dunno. I think its viscous - 90% sure.

oh - and you can't shim a viscous diff (right?).

You can shim up viscous diff centres. Its just very difficult to get the right amount of pressure on the viscous hub thingy.

I machined another factory shim and found it to be too tight, completely turned it into a locked diff.

What you need to do is keep surface grinding the tickness down(or machine another shim) till you get some slippage on the sungears.

You can buy the shims from Nissan for under $20, a stock viscous diff has one, two will make it fairly tight but nice to drive. The part number is 38424-40F60 I think.
