Guys and Gals,

Just a friendly reminder to be careful when driving around at night. Black ice is starting to show its ugly face again, so be prepared for anything. I found out the hard way last night what it can do to your car.....

I was driving home at about 1.30am, not going hard or fast, turning right from Ashlely Dr onto Sternberg Cres when my car suddenly lost all traction and kicked sideways. being totally un-prepared, i over corrected a little and was sliding towards a 90 degree kerb, with no control WHATSOEVER! All i could do was straighten my wheels and hit the kerb front on. Anyone who knows this area will know that this area has many trees lining the road. I then had to swerve to avoid the trees, but i just clipped one, damaging my drivers door, Qtr panel and side skirt. some how i managed to not damage my suspension (upon 1st inspection, but im sure chris at inline will find something :D ). i count myself as very lucky, as it could've been alot worse. as you can imagine, i pretty annoyed ;) i'll post up some pics of the damage soon.

So just keep it the back of your mind and be careful :O

i hit some the other morning too actually. my rear end got a bit loose, but luckily i get drive in my front wheels too and i managed to get it corrected and kept on going. very scary feeling losing control when you haven't been driving fast at all

Geez, that's nasty. It must have frozen over just after I pasted last night. I reckon you were goin quick tho :), just from what i've seen and the road is 4 lanes across with an island!

Anyways, bad luck dude, Chris always finds something.

I've seen a car cross two lanes at 15 km'h unhindered to rest up a gutter:black ice/any ice is next to impossible to have any sort of control on. To say Frink was going too fast isn't factual, provable,or even likely. I've seen the guy drive in different situation, and he's one of very few people that 'can steer a car',IMHO,with his brain actually connected to his feet. If he says he wasn't going fast,or 'pushing on',I'll believe him. It'd be a fool to post here saying one thing if there was a chance a witness could prove otherwise. You'd be suprised how far insurance companies, police, private investigators and people with their nose out of joint will go to find out more about us lot...

So,heed Frink's warning, and ease up a bit! I don't think anyone was flaming him intently for crashing and the reasons he came unstuck, but we should all tread lightly these days, yes?

that sucks dude. I have heard you are one of the other "trained" drivers around town so i wont hold an accident like this against you. Havent had much experience with "black ice" myself. Anyone got the goss on it? Where it forms, under what conditions etc?

It forms when dew on the road turns to a thin layer of ice. It sux hardcore and as said, once you are on it you have no chance of controlling the car, it just slides wherever it wants until it hits something and comes to a stop, or you come off the ice. Its also next to impossible to see as its a very thin layer, often following the contours of the rocks in the road, which makes it hard to spot because its not flat and slick/reflective.

I was driving to Jindabyne a few years back and a birgde past Cooma airport was completely covered in black ice. We were doing about 50km/h (in a rated 100km/h zone) and as soon as you got on the bridge it was game over, no control what so ever, you jusrt hoped you could slide to the other side without hitting anything. Luckily I didnt as I was in the GTR, still a shit scary experience though.

Sux to hear about the car man :(

thanks for the support guys. (blushes..)

that piece of road is wide, but slopes down towards the left in a big way, and i was over to the left side of the road.

if i was pushing through there, i wouldn't be so 'upset' cause it would've been my own fault, but i was just cruising, minding my own business when i lost control and so close to home too (i live the next street up). not happy....

ah well, sh1t happens....

Some take pics someone...

I've had plenty of issues with black ice over the years (I lived in the high country for some time). There is just nothing you can do once you've hit it, even if you are Ayrton Senna.

I've lost a car myself on the ice, I wasn't pushing on, I was being *very conservative*, car came unstuck at 20kays in a straight line (in a 50-60 zone) no matter what I did it juwst started spinning, and hit a gutter (prolly at 10 kays). Its truly like have a bunch of ballbearings thrown under your wheels.

I'm just glad to hear Frink is fine. These things can turn out much worse.

It used to always form on parts of my driveway in the morning when i was a kid. the number of times i fell on my ass, it wasn't funny!

Sucks to hear it though man. The only time i lost control of my car was under similar circumstances, not doing anything stupid. lucky i only went up a gutter though, but i know how you feel. if you were doing something stupid you only have yourself to blame, but since you weren't it makes it harder to accept. Good luck with the car.

Epic 6+ year Thread Bump !!!

Just this morning at 6:50am, -5 degrees after late rain yesterday.

Doing 100km/h on the Barton, slight right hand curve, slightly downhill, in the right lane. (less prior traffic).

UNDERSTEER !!!

Happened twice. It's a weird feeling doing 100ks and suddenly the car unexpectedly twitches.

Luckily it was over quickly. Could've been alot worse.

JUST BE CAREFUL OUT THERE KIDS !!!
