I have tried quite a few different types of clamps to try to remove the oil filter and been disappointed by all of them and end up using the screwdriver through the side technique.

Most of them use a handle that is in line with the filter and usually gives no room to swing it in the engine bay but this one uses a socket wrench fitting along the axis of the filter and it is no problem for swing as it is well away from the motor and it actually grips it with no problems.

To some on here it will be old hat but I didnt know of this type as others probably dont.

this is brilliant....I have the other crappy type of filter wrench (el-cheapo inline thing)...it's usually fine for the skyline, but it caused over an hour of swearing when working on my parents Mazda B2600 ute, there's absolutely no room around the filter for the tool I have....I eventually loosened it, not not without completely squashing it with g-clamps hoping these would work better! :D

That is a fairly good generic tool.

I use one of these.

It's made by Lisle tools and also available through repco - approx cost $40.00

It is made for a 15 fin, 80mm oil filter. On a RB25DET it is the easiest fit you will ever get.

It fits most filters, repco, valvoline etc, however it will not fit the ryco z145a filter.

oil filter only really needs to be tightened to 16Nm. you can achieve this by hand tightening it, as long as you place a small film of oil on the seal when installing one, it should be reasonably easy to remove by hand.

Mine is stuck on so tight I bent the filter wrench I have, so I'm just going to get my mechanic to do the old screwdriver trick for me. Saves me a little money and when the new filter goes on, I'm making sure its on hand tight (+ 1/4 turn cause I can't get a great grip on it) AT MOST! This means I probably won't even have to use any sort of filter wrench/socket/whatever to remove it next time.

I'd like to slap around the moron who put the filter on before I bought the car.
