Are 4wd Manual & Auto Transfer Cases The Same?

Recommended Posts

Hi Guys,

I should probably have asked this before i bought the autobox & transfer case but i was told by a good source that all 4wd transfer case's were the same.

Basically i have an 89 r32 gtr where my transfer case is making a bearing/grinding noise in 4wd mode only. Rwd is fine, 4wd still actually works like normal its just really noisy.

So basically using the info i was told i bought a stagea auto transfer case (gbox came with it) and my mechanic says they are different.

Im not sure in what way, my question is, is it possible to use the auto transfer in my car or am i screwed?

Thanks dudes

Alem

they are different outer casings, as the manual has the shifter coming out of it, and the auto doesnt. plus the stagea auto transfer case internals are not as heavy duty and only have 6 studs pressing the clutches together and gtr is about 8 i think from memory. ive had both apart and side by side as i have a stagea and i ripped the stagea TFC apart to swap over parts into my current gtr transfer case and they are different.

the actual clutch plates and the rest are all the same though, so put the clutch packs from the stagea one into the gtr casing and use the gtr splines, and everything.

the clutch packs are the only thing that wear out so switch em over and u should be right :)

they are $37 each from nissan new, and u need 12 of em if u want it 100% new ;)

the grinding etc sounds like bearings so i'd be replacing them too with brand new ones, dont waste your time with used ones unless u like doing it twice as they are bound to be just as bad

Thanks for the reply bud,

Thats good news that the clutch plates fit, what about bearings etc as like i said there is some sort of a bearing or whirring noise as speed gets faster and only in 4wd mode

Thanks again

[Edit] - Cool just saw your edit about the bearings - Ill try get a price on new bearings etc Thanks :)

all the internal are identical except the 6 studs compared to 8 on the gtr one, so less clamping pressure on stagea unit. im not sure if thats because its from an auto or because its just a better design on the gtr manual TF case.

bearings are all the same as well, but its a pain in the arse replacing stuff in the transfer case and bearings from nissan aint too pricey and u will know they are not the problem if the noise continues after u reinstall it.

u havent pulled the actuator from the rear of the TFC have u in the recent past since the noise started? i found a problem in mine when i removed the actuator from the very rear of the TFC and when u reinstall it, the little peg that presses the clutches on gets jammed to the side abit and makes the 4wd on 100% of the time and it whines and makes loud noises when operating.

Ok cool thanks :)

Hmm interesting, ill have a look at that tomorrow.. Basically the noise just started and eventually got louder and louder and now sounds like a cortina's diff on its last legs haha..

My 4wd torque guage is acting normally not anywhere near 100% on or anything like that but definatley worth a look

    • Heaps of historical info on this, a quick Google gave dates back to 2012, all talk about identification markings, dimples, shapes of mounting surfaces, washers, that are concave or something to match the fasteners mounting surface, which ARP states that if the washer, if it uses a washer in its application, isn't the right way around, it can cause premature failure,  even if it was torqued up correctly with whatever lube is meant to be used There is even talk about getting the bolts Xrayed to check the structure, one was about some builder getting multiple sets of bolts, having them Xrayed, and picking from those results Nowadays identical "looking" fake parts, in identical looking fake packaging are everywhere, with all the markings and stuff, the only way you know they are not legit is Xray or when they fail I assume if you don't want fake parts, and don't have a Xray machine handy, is to get them directly from ARP in the USofA, aftermarket rod and head bolts aren't something to take for granted  Imagine building a big dollar build only to find you lunch it because of an inferior fake fixture let go 😫

    • It's in the bloody domain name twice! Yes...the GTR boxen have, for some reason, been cheaper than the RWD boxen for a long time. 10 years ago the GTST box was available here for <AU$3k. 5 years ago the GTT box was available for ~AU$3300. Both retail through 3rd party. Now the GTT box is >4k locally and only available for less if you're willing to jump through some hoops. Apparently they can be ordered from Nissan dealers for $3-3.5k at trade pricing. A friend of mine has a new GTT box sitting on his showroom floor that I keep wanting to hit him up for but I'd somewhat rather he sold it to someone else at his asking price than to me for a mate's rates discount.
