The people I know who do that sort of thing prefer the lightest possible components for best power to weight ratio . An all aluminium (block and head) engine would be probably better and a transverse one with acceptable production diff and gearbox ratios helps keep the costs down . Getting short enough drive shafts for the desired track width can be a problem at times so using small car bits is important .

I have seen them built around a 1 litre 3 cyl Charade engine , 1600 stretched Suzuki Cultis engine and a Honda 1600 SOHC with CVT box . I would look into the all aluminium Diahatsu HD series 1600 16V engine (Aplause , De Tomasso G203 Charade) because its reasonably lightweight and has some interesting ratios able to be bitzered together . Rospen Motorsport (Ross Macenzie) knows these thing inside out from rallying them so for performance its reasonably cheap .

On the dirt turbo torque is difficult to use because of traction issues - in Khana Cross anyway so I'm told .

the power to weight ratio is excelent..i can pick the entire engine with turbo manifold and turbo...sure it kill your back at 2am when there is no one to help you....its not that heavy....has alloy gearbox no 4wd trans axle...goes well 8 pound boost...i am looking for a 2 ltr nissan motor or similar ca18 or sr20deta close friend raced these buggies had CAMS registration and all so his inmput was help full

most have trouble with cv joint failure...only had one subru cv fail...the full on big hp buggys rebuild porche cvs to suit the drive train...got pictures...

My son has a ca18det complete with wiring harness and ecu sitting here collecting dust had 115XXX something on the clock when i Pulled it out has the sr20det turbo on it did an sr20det transplant on it think he was looking at 1k for everything
