this "Speed, and your as good as dead" crap gives me the shits. It's just the only way they know of lookin like they're doin something to try to prevent road fatalities.. but doind 70k's over the limit, that's just askin for trouble, and making them come down harder on everyone who does a little too much.

Gradenko, i was clearly having a dig at someone because they didnt learn to speed in less policed areas after the first time they were caught. Ive got nothing against speeding as you might claim, just dont speed in stupid places.

As for being convinced by the government, thats just crap. I was convinced from two accidents that driving is not something to be taken lightly. And when i speed i make sure i do it alone and where if i or something goes wrong, im the only person I hurt.

But i suppose gradenko because you hate the goverment so much you speed everywhere just to show you have no respect for their authoritah. Youd condone for instance 70km/h over through a pedestrian precinct because to the best of your knowledge speeding in fact doesnt kill? Yes its all a government conspiracy.

Everyone likes to open it up now and then, just do it out the back of whoop whoop and not on the freeway. While your probly unlikley to hurt anyone on the freeway and its a safe road, in terms of police presence you may as well wind down the window and throw your licence out.

NO_RSPECT,

Yea i did the same thing, and got the same penalty.I was lucky they cut the 6 points and didnt bring me to court. If you have the same insane tendencies as me, then try not to do it on freeway(with bridges),but more in a more longer "lonely country" road, and i stress lonely(at some unspecified exit of some unspecified freeway).(sorry if the things i say offends anyone)

Fair enough... or at least until you go on to say:

The freeway, at the right time of day, is a safe place to speed. We're talking about a multilaned highway built to autobahn like standards - emergency lane, saftey barriers, wire rope, large median, ample lighting and drainage. Road capable of close to twice the speed limit and you call it a stupid place to speed? The back of whoop whoop has unsafe roads and that makes it stupid to speed on.

As for being convinced by the government, thats just crap. I was convinced from two accidents that driving is not something to be taken lightly.

Two accidents before you learnt. Wow. Allow me to make a misinformed and malaligned comment on your driving habits based on incomplete infomation.

I know your not serious (point by exaggeration, always a good debate technique :P ), but I'll take the bait. For the record, I fully support and follow 50km/h limits in built up areas. But as a point of debate, would you be interested to learn that pedestrian death tolls in built areas have remained the same or, in some cases, increased after introducition of 50km/h limits? Turns out that morons which jaywalk will jaywalk no matter what, and whether you're doing 50 or 60, the jaywalker gets brained all the same.

Lets not turning this into another speeding vs the law thread. Get enough of that on aus.cars as it is.

there is no autobahn here. Pedestrians have the right of way. Noone cares if you open up on roads in whoop whoop, because you are only going to kill yourself if something goes wrong.

70kms over the limit in anything other than a short burst is asking for trouble. its not that you cant handle the speed, its just murphys law. Something will ****up bigtime one day.

and personally 50kms is a pain in the arse;P 60 was ok

You might find that many countries know that speeding in itself has barely any influence on crashes! It's all to do with removing low performance drivers and not performance cars - if someone drives out of the limits of themselves and their vehicle, then they will crash of course ... but within the limits of the vehicle is safe enough.

In England on the motorway (comparable to freeway here) they won't get arrested for anything up to 100mph (160kph) since it is regarded as a fast intercity route. The speed limits here are plain ludicrous, for such a small city it takes AGES to get places. Some places I agree with the limits, like stirling hwy and in built up areas, but things like west coast hwy (esp with them thinking of dropping the limit back to 70kph) things are just getting stupid.

The government isn't seeing a change in road deaths because all that they do is alter the speed limit, and don't enforce other areas well enough (eg drink driving), it has virtually dick to do with speed. In England on pretty much the smallest of roads you could do 60mph (100kph) and their deaths were lower than here. I've seen a large number of recent road crashes linked to stolen vehicles and/or substance abuse, whether alcoholic or drugs

If you feel like 60kph is enough red17, then good, you're as safe as you're going to get :P

At 60kph I find it too slow, and my concentration lapses since I'm not going anywhere at 60kph, and I look at other things (eg blondes chicks in scantally clad clothing) - that itself is dangerous since my attention isn't constantly on the road. I obey the speed limits for sure, I like my license, but don't be confused as to put the direct link of crashes to speed.

Although i tend to agree with you mate. i think gradenko has a point in sayin that the freeway is a safer place to speed. due to one reason. it is a road designed to make it accesable for a higher speed. Pedestrains arent allowed on the free way, it is a solid and smooth tarmac road, wide, and well lit. But due to the fact that it is a heavily used road it is policed more closely than a country road.

The speeding on a country road is in fact more dangerous due to the fact that they dont receive regular maitenance, usually have god awful ditches on the side, are made from that crappy stone sh1t, and more often than not have blind corners. Plus dont forget they generally arent wide enough to support two cars. (i am talking real country roads. not major roads that cut thru the country . I.E Armadale)

In saying this i dont condone speeding and am proud to say i havent had a fine since November 2001. But please. just think about it. even though country roads are less policed. they are in no way safer to speed on than the free way.

i dont know where the hell you got that from but its entirely incorrect. get caught for doing 100mph on the M1 and youll lose your license for 6 months and face a tribunal. dont believe me? call my uncle

adam, the posted speed limit is 70mph, but they allow you to go to 100mph

I went by side-laned police checking speeds in their raised bit all the time, and they never ever did anything

It's common knowledge that they let you go doing this since it's regarded as a fast intercity transport (which is what the motorways were designed for).

Has been like this since Home Secretary Jack Straw got pulled over doing 100mph in his Vauxhall Omega, in July 2000 (near Taunton) on the M5, and they changed it; otherwise he was facing 6 points and £2,500 fine

I don't kow when or where you did your speeding, but you mustn't have brought to ttheir attention the point in the motorway (many of my friends before July 2000 said the same, and were let off as a result)

yep, if I'm driving too slowly, it takes aaages to get to a poiont that you can see on the horizon. Since it's on the horizon you can see what else stands in your way, thus your mind wanders to other things to keep it 'entertained' or busy; instead of looking at the same thing for a v long time.

caught after the drags while chasing a blonde in an accent. that has gotta hurt! you obviously had a bit of catching up to do???

anyway, can i suggest an aw11 as your next car? we need the members!

...provided you can handle being beaten by strychnine that is :P

Yes Gradenko, but unlike getting caught for 70 over, my accidents werent MY fault. I was merely expressing the fact that the experience scared the crap out of me and as such I tend to treat driving as a much more serious matter than in my untamed youth.

And i fully agree with you on the 50 zone part, despite the lack of reduced road toll. Pedestrian stupidity will never be eradicated.

Indeed the freeway IS a safe place to speed (however my point was always that the freeway is more policed, not that it was less safe). So are alot of roads out the back of "Whoop whoop". You need to pick and choose obviously but theres alot of roads out there that id rate as being very safe for having a bit of a lark.

Now before someone elses objects to my post and says "The freeway is a safe place to speed" read my post AGAIN, see the bit where i say "...unlikley to hurt anyone on the freeway and its a safe road". I AGREE WITH YOU DAMMIT

And PSIKO, ive looked right through this thread searching for where ive linked speeding to crashes and cant yet find what the heck your on about.
