General Motors is considering a shareholder proposal to join America's biggest carmaker with Nissan and Renault.

Kirk Kerkorian, General Motors' biggest individual shareholder, has urged the struggling car maker to unite with Carlos Ghosn's Nissan and Renault.

Kerkorian's Tracinda Corporation, the owner of a 9.9 per cent stake in GM, said in a letter to GM chief executive Rick Wagoner that the Japanese and French car companies were receptive to buying a significant minority interest. GM said it would consider the proposal, and Nissan and Renault said they were open to expanding their alliance if GM's board approved.
