hey guys is the spigot bearing and thrust bearing the same thing or not? my knowledge is that the thrust bearing is the one the clutch fork presses onto and therefore presses the clutch fingers in, and where exactly is the spigot bush/bearing located? is it in the crank or the flywheel? i got the JUN crank and i didnt put one in if its supposed to be in the rear of the crank :thumbsup:

just wondering cause my box is noisy on idle with the clutch not pressed and when loading it up hills it makes a terrible whirring/grinding noise at lowish rpm which is annoying and doesnt seem right.

any ideas guys?

No their not. The clutch throw-out bearing (which is a thrust bearing) is on the clutch fork as you say. The spigot bearing supports the end of the gearbox input shaft and is pressed into the back end of the crank.

the spigot bush fits over your finger.

But a few people get them mixed up. Unfortunately its one of those things that only really makes sense when you pull the car apart and see how it all fits together.

my crank is a jun aftermarket one and brand new so it didnt come with one installed and i didnt even remember about it before i installed the box and since the new rebuild its been noisy as hell and grinding abit soo it looks like its a box out again for the 2nd time in 2 weeks (snapped the pivot ball in half last week from my heavy twin plate clutch)

these spigot bushes are cheap as arn't they?

i can get the box out in under an hour these days ive had sooo much practice ;) and thats without a hoist and just in my 2 car garage with a jack and spanners.

Hi the spigot bush (its just a plain brass one) the guy at the nissan parts dept told me is a normal part number and is off a pulsar. but its an awefull tight fit and if you dont watch it it goes right in too far (which means in my case you have to go and buy another and fit it in as well cos you wont get it out once its gone right in) they are only about $20. but without it you will kill the fromt bearings on the gearbox as it supports the whole spigot which goes from the gearbox through the clutch and into the flywheel.(did all this when converting to manual from auto :thumbsup:

Please update us with how it goes Cruiseliner.. i'm definately interested to see what it could be.. do you think you forgot to put it in when you put the gearbox back in??

i did forget it for sure, as the crank is brand new and i didnt even realise i needed one as i was told from a previous workshop that i dont use anymore due to them being totally useless in every aspect and they told me to remove my auto spigot bush from my stagea rb25 auto engine when i installed it into my vl calais with a manual box but they didnt say i needed a manual one in its place so i assumed manuals just didnt use one at all. luckily the 26 had one in b4 the engine build cause i had a stock crank but since the change to the jun one i didnt even think about it and thought my box was on the way out until i read a post about someone elses box doing the same thing and mine shudders alot at low rpm (around 2k rpm and under in 2nd gear and 3rd especially because i been loading it up hills to run it in and its dreadful when it does it :O

ive just finished pulling everything off the box ready to slide it out tommorow arvo after work and should be done by the next day for sure if i can get the spigot from nissan tommorow after work.

glad i dont have to pay a mechanic to do it as it would be expensive in labour.

only took me just under an hour to pull everything off besides actually sliding the box off the back of the engine and thats with a mate hanging around slowing me down so it wasnt a bad effort in the end hehe :O

thanks again everyone for the input, now how do i make sure the input shaft bearing, etc is fine before i put it all back in and find its still shuddering? ive done 1000km with it not installed which is a worry, though all done under 4k rpm, but alot of loading it up hills etc in 5th, but i made sure it never shuddered when doin it so hopefully its all ok :/

it's attrocious if a workshop doesn't know what one is and why it's needed! The spigot bush basically holds the gearbox shaft in there snuggly and makes sure the input shaft rotates smoothly around its axis. From my understanding it stops an offcenter wobble or vibration as the input shaft spins.

A box may still whine with the spigot bush installed correct in there, as the input shaft bearing (inside the box) can still be stuffed in the box itself.

while you are at it I would buy one of the bearings pictured above (the one on the right). They are from Unique Autosports. give john a call and get them to post you one.

i pulled box out and guess what... f**kin spigot bush is already in (must have come with the crank) :D

nuthin like wasting hours pulling box in and out for no bloody reason.

box is back in now so i dont think that bearing is an option at the moment, but im sure it will be out soon enough knowing my luck hehe

So it sounds like it could be the input shaft bearing maybe?

possibly, though i gotta remember its only revvin to 4k rpm runnin like 10:1 afr's and only has 130rwhp which is wayyy low for a 1700kg car trying to pull around under 2000rpm so maybe thats the main issue as it would have almost 0 torque as it is. so im gonna wait till its tuned properly and see how it is and then pull it out if continues to annoy the shits out of me :D

Ive just pulled my gearbox out and im replacing the Spigot anyways. $19 from nissan. I didnt get the roller bearing looking one as posted above - but I dont think its gunna matter a hell of a lot.

When I got my S13 converted to manual by a reputable workshop I had endless problems with the gearbox not going into gear and making terrible grinding noises they insisted it was nothing to do with them and was from the way I drove,

well when the motor blew and it was taken out for the new one to go in it was discovered they never even put the spigot bush on the gearbox, so from that the gearbox is dead now too.... so yeah you definately need one :(

yeah that bearing replacing the normal bush. much better option I'd say. certainly less wear.

i found my vibration issue anyway :D bloody diff mounting bolts were bottoming out before the diff was tight against the body making it loose as hell and i installed some more rubbers and its beautiful now so i took the damn box out for nuthin :)

also sorted my clutch issues as per the other thread so it was a rather productive weekend all round in the end :D

I noticed today that my spigot is infact in 2 pieces inside my crank - thanks to a very loose input shaft. The bearing that was originally inside my input shaft was clapped out bigtime, so a new beefier and longer bearing has been put in and all should be sweet. I just purchased the standard bushing from nissan but now im seriously contemplating getting a similar bearing to that of the one inside the input shaft as pictured above. Pity I just spent $20 on the standard bushing!

    • 2 does "sort of" applies, maybe......but looking at what parts would be needed for the swap to get engineered, registered, and insured, and basically that's everything under the car, the modifications the make it legal would be problematic and horrendously expensive, all for a street car that just cruises around and hits a few twisty roads on the weekends Also, from looking at the NSW rules and Regs, with all modifications that is required just to make the car safe and not twist itself to pieces, and then actually get registered for street use, may still be impossible nowadays As for 1, when you add in a fresh engine, fresh transmission, rear cradle and diff, tailshaft, suspension, brakes, cooling, and all the other fabrication required, your probably looking at up to $100k to do it right, all for a 20 year old MX5 that is over engineered and you would never be able to actually use the power it has on the street, much like your beastie, which I love, but you actually track that thing and can use all of its powers in anger, in a safe environment  Hell, the old Bogan Cruise Ship had more power than I could use on the street, and in hindsight, I went a bit silly on that thing, it didn't really need the 500hp it had for what I actually used the car for, it was fun, but basically unusable on the street if you value your licence  As for cams, yeah, I'll probably book it in for them to get installed and tuned soonish, like next month after MX5 Mania are back at work....... and yes, I've already sent a email to bin the turbo quote and quote instead to install cams and a new Fluidampr balancer that will suit the 2.5 better than the OEM 2.0 balancer that is swapped over for the 2.5 install, as the balancer needs to get pulled to time the cams it's a while your in there sort of thing I did think a bit about flex fuel for a laugh, but being na, and no where really around locally anymore to get E85, I've binned that idea, so no sweet sweet corn smells are set for the car I wish E85 was more of a standard fuel, it's better for the environment, better for tuning, plus that sweet sweet smell we all love As for fitting in the family, that's not needed, as everyone in the family already owns a car that can seat 5 humans comfortably enough, the MX5 is "my toy" As for buying a car that is already built, nah, I would rather pick and choose my parts, I enjoy the process, and in the big picture, the additional cost is well worth the enjoyment, and the occasional frustration, I get out of doing it, albeit with other people spinning the spanners, and me, just paying the invoice 🤣
    • Excuse me, but 2) does apply 1) Would also apply if you consider how much is spent in the alternatives. Also there's the option of 3), buy one pre-built that you can put your family in (it's me, it's my car)   That said, I went on a ~500km drive the other day. I didn't use anything more adventurous than 3rd/4th gear at about ~3000RPM and 50% throttle and I was going as fast as anyone has any sense doing on a public road, with enough grip to the point where I didn't want to go any faster. I was obviously under the limit of the current car etc etc. MX5 with 2.5 N/A to achieve the same speed would be more fun for any road scenario. Maybe consider cams. I wouldn't boost it. The use case is just not there and it won't actually make the car more enjoyable unless you really do plan on wringing gears from 1st to 3rd (at least) at 100% WOT on a public road to 150+kmh.

Lived in a country where you could actually do this and drive it legally on the road Sadly, neither applies to me As for the turbo, I am having second thoughts, mainly for engineering/registration legality reasons and insurance  Not saying I've finished doing stupid things that I probably should do to the MX5, but boost, and V8 engine swaps isn't on the cards Strange, but true
