Hey,

I need help with the installation of an airbag steering wheel into an r33. I originally bought the car without the airbag wheel, and have since bought one and now need it installed. I have only bought the wheel and the airbag part, no covers or bolts. I have had had the mechanic install the wheel, but he was unable to figure out the airbag component, and didnt want to trigger it, just like myself. So i took the wheel to an auto electrician who had a play with it and after finding some instructions, still could not install the airbag or even get the horn to work.

He then said that perhaps the steering wheel is not suited to the car, but i assured him that the n15 sss wheel, s2 200sx, and the s2 180sx wheel were all the same. So he then said that if i could find a wiring diagram then that would assist, also mentioning that the yellow wire is the airbag wire, so dont touch it! He also recommeded that if i could not get that, take it to just jap, who should be able to sort it out.

Now im not real keen on attempting this now that these guys couldn't get it, but im a little lost as what these wires are and what im missing. There is also a socket underneath the wheel which doesn't have a plug. So what is the problem with this wheel? What am i missing and where do these wires go? Also what is the little yellow box on the end of one of the plugs. Another thing is that my car airbag light acts normal, as that it turns on for a few seconds upon ignition and then turns off? Clicky-Clickys attached.

Does anyone have any pics of their wheel without the airbag? If you just took your airbag off, could you post up a pic so i can see where the wires go. or maybe if someone could remove just the bottom cover on the wheel which should expose the wiring. i should be able to see them then.

Dont know where the horn wire goes either?

the wires should connect to the clock spring which is located on top of the indicator switch assy ....if your airbag light comes on when you switch the ignition on the goes off then i am tipping that you have one of those resistor thingys on the clock spring loom to trick the airbag ecu into thinking it has all its componants fitted....

your pics are taking too long to upload as i am on dial up....but the yellow box was on with your old wheel right? If thats the case i would say arsehole the yellow box, connect the two pin wire from the airbag to that one and the clockspring (should be a 4 wire connector)to the other one and you will be in business.....i wouldnt be to worried about it going off .....it needs to detect a shock from the airbag ECU before it goes off....but i usually stand back before switching it on anyway

oh.....and make sure the clock spring is half way in its scope....example....turn its clockwise and dont force it when it wants to stop (as doing this will break the ribbon tape inside)Then turn it anti clockwise counting how many turns it goes around before it wants to stop, then turn it clockwise to the halfway point.

your really game for f*king with SRS systems

i do it for a living and have seen em go off, believe me its not something you want to happen

if i were you i would take it to someone who specialises in SRS and is trained in the field

i cant see the problem.....even if the airbag ecu is faulty the bag wont be deployed.....if the bag is designed for that particular car then as long as all the plugs have a home and you dont go bashing the sensor with a hammer its ok....and if its bolted on "if" it does deploy well big deal....i mean they go off when you have a prag and your face is right next to the steering wheel

when they go off in an accident the seat belt pretensioners hold you back in your seat first then the bag goes off so it doesnt f*k you up.

people have been killed when playing with airbags and coping it in the head

Hey i have to put the Airbag wheel on my car to get it roadworthy, its an R33 Series2 so i can take lots of pictures for you and help you with the wiring to get it working for you, i will also tell you how to reset the airbag computer which has to be done or it wont be working.

All i require in return is a hard copy of the wiring diagrams you you have and any other wiring diagrams you may have. I collect all kinds of wiring diagrams and removal/dissasembly instructions for the R33, so i need a good photocopy of them, or if you dont want them anymore then the originals would be even better. But i will make sure i get everything working for you first.

So if you still havent got it going and you need my help just let me know.

i think we need a steering wheel removal DIY in the tutorials section.. ive been wanting to replace my stock steering wheel for a while now, but ive been freakin out with the whole airbag thing, jst incase it goes off..

a few ppl have suggested to simply disconnect the car battery and drain the power by depressing the brake pedal?

can this be done?

or does the airbag unit have its own power source?

MKDR33, im pretty sure there is about three threads on removing a steering wheel. I just couldnt find any on the installation of one. From what i have read, the airbag would only go off if it had power, not by impact alone. So if you disconnect the power, it will be fine. Im not sure about the theory on draining the power, as i didnt think that it was actually stored anywhere? Most people that removed their airbag wheel usually only complain about the airbag light that stays on. So, if you are going to remove it, be prepared to fix this by the methods in those threads. As mentioned in this one, my air bag light still operates as normal, which could be due to a resistor.

Mick, any pics or help you could offer would be great for me or anyone else that may need this thread. Im pretty sure to reset the computer, it was to turn the ignition on and then hit the drivers door strike button several times. But ylwgtr2 could confirm this, as i remember reading it from another thread that he posted on. The only wiring diagrams that i have are the ones that have been made available on these forums. So if you require a specific one, have a search around, save them, then print it out if you want a hard copy.

Yeah, i have installed and bolted in my airbag. It didnt take off my head when i turned the power back on, so im guessing im on the right track. i got the horn to work as well, which was simple enough.

If you have some questions about the install, post them up. As i said, my mechanic installed the wheel, i just done the airbag.

Its hard to know the problem. Have you checked the fuses? checked the wiring? I found that the connectors on the actual horn had become very loose, so i replaced them. Checked the conection on the steering wheel? Try using a multimeter to find the problem. I take it you have searched?
