Hi Guys,

Just a question from a dumb blond... Ok what I am trying to do is rase the standard boost on a R33 GTS25T to a standard pressure of 9 psi but also retaing the standard boost controll that has a 2 psi jump to 11 psi.... What I am thinking of doing is to tap the actuator line and fit a boost bleed to give base boost of 9psi and still leave the standard controller in the set up that gives a 2 psi step up over 4.500 rpm...

anyone tryed this? if not do you think it will work ok. you guys been playing with these cars longer than me..Cheers Robyn

main thing here is WHY ?

just remove th std staged boost and run 11psi all the time..

Hi, the idea is two fold 1) less boost for wet roads, reason being my partner is not a experenced driver yet and 2) fuel consumption around town...

Answers to first part of 1 & 2) throttle control.. Just because they are inexperienced doesn't mean they have to put their foot down all the time.. and 2psi isn't going to be too huge.. As for fuel consumption, well.. I wouldn't recommend a turbo and just drive off boost..

Answer for the 2nd part of question 1, you can do it.. I believe some of the guys tried it with the turbotech one, however found that it didn't work as exactly 2 psi and probably spiked a bit..

Personally if you have a stock turbo + stock ecu - run 10psi max.. running 11 will prob cause it to exceed the air flow threshold and Rich & Retard the engine..

Get a bleed valve and just run 9psi..

i agree with the others. mutlistage boost is pointless, just run the safest boost you can on your system. use your pedal to control throttle. boost doesnt make a car use fuel, drive sideways or run into a wall. the driver and thorttle pedal do. just get some practice driving and youll be fine. if you arent cofident with the power, then simply dont floor it.

there is no other simple way to describe it

if you floor it

its going to bring on engine load

which will make more boost

which will make more air

which will make the engine work harder

dont floor it, it wont make boost

Personally I dont think 2 psi is going to make enough difference in either the fuel consumption or the power to worry about it

it will make a difference in power. if you have ever driven a r33 skyline still using the stock solenoid you can feel it when it jumps from 5psi to 7. also i have a dual stage boost controller set to 10 and 12psi and you can feel the difference.

also at WOT 2psi will make a difference to fuel consumption. there is more air going past the afm at the higher boost, so more fuel has to go in to keep the afr's in the same region.

yes I do realise that it will make an actual difference. sorry I forgot to say a noticable difference, or a worth while difference. meaning I doubt you would notice the huge amount of fuel you would be using running 11 psi as apose to the honda jazz like amount of fuel you will use when running 9 psi.

Basically Im with everyone else on here. I dont see why people bother with different boost settings. have your car tuned to a safe / powerful amount of boost and leave it at that. if you dont want to run high boost after that, dont put your foot down! but I for one cant imagine a time when I put my foot to the floor, let the revs go up and NOT want all the power of the engine. And for the fuel consumption, once again goes on the throttle control there, but you own a turbo performance car. It is never going to be good on fuel so when your driving around town, keep the revs down and dont put your foot to the floor. You will notice that the boost doesnt raise up if you keep the revs down, therefore there is your low boost setting!! Simple!!

Hi everyone. thank you for the advice I have built the set up I discribed the result is setting 1 standard boost settings 5/7 psi

2nd setting 8/10psi

3rd setting constant 12.5 psi

ok I can use the right foot to control the boost but this was a bit of a challenge for me, to do something I was told by a guy that couldn't be done... hahahaha

not only that but it looks nice with the little lights working...

so how exactly did you do it?

OK THE SET UP is basicly two systems in one the original boost controler is maintained the earth lead to this controller was cut and a diode placed in line to stop backfeed to the ECU A 2nd earth wire to a switch again with a diode inline to stop backfeed.. I then cut the main line to the wastegate inserted a T joint and ran a line to a electric shut of valve and then to a boost control bleed... so how it works ..nothing turned on standard boost 5/7 psi turn on the earthig switch to standard controler constant 7 psi boost ..Standard control switch off and the secondary controler on adds the standard boost 5/7 plus secondary boost added = 5+5 =10 and 7 +5=12 also with both switches on 7 psi original plus 5 psi secondary constant 12psi

    • A little follow up here on the ceramic coating.  We've had storms galore here and I've done a few ks, enough to gross them up  Consensus is that they didn't get as dirty as usual, the coating definitely repelled a little of the dirt and I think they kinda snowball. They get a little dirty and then they get dirty faster which makes sense. Cleaning them regularly would allow them to protect better.  Cleaning was a breeze. I tried first to just hose them off which, unsurprisingly, did nothing. But, making the wheels wet and then just wiping them over with a used but clean microfibre cloth was all that was required. I didn't need any cleaner at all, just water and a cloth. The wheels look amazing again.
    • Gave her a nice wash today and took extra time to clean off the tree sap and tar and crap. We have a usable garage now so she'll stay cleaner longer. Took a few snaps in some nice light afterwards.   
    • OK, solid mount Z1 diff brace is in, pretty straightforward, it picks up 3 diff hat bolts and ties them to 2 support bolts on the subframe. Pretty sure someone else on here said they had reduced axle tramp with this but mine was already pretty good for smooth wheelspin, and still is....will see you this goes over time and whether I end up with a broken rear diff hat
    • Ah yes, but the part in my hand was actually painted and fitted by me! I knew any front lip was likely to be sacrificial but I've had to fix it twice already... by the time I buy a fibreglass fixing kit, sort out sandpaper blocks, buy some fibreglass filler, body bog, spend the time and effort for a 'Greg' result... a new one being $290 seems like it's the better way to go and spray that with bedliner/raptor coat and we're all pretty again.. Would have preferred it last more than a month though. Them's the breaks I suppose.
    • I find it funny that the USA is finding out all this really really weird stuff, and people from the USA are coming here treating it like gospel, yet, all the info on solving those issues is here on these forums for the last 15 odd years... Also, I know how much heat it takes to ignite the hood lining of an R33 skyline. I worked it out myself... It also took a LOT of time, and heat for it to do it... Big single, and I needed to drive the car, so retarded the timing off to "protect it". Yeah, that was a bad move for cruising on a freeway with only 15 degrees of timing on it. That was a lesson I learned around 2009. So that's over 15 odd years ago. Aligning water and oil, that's identical for any turbo engine, it's not Japanese specific. If a shop doesn't know how to make sure the core is rotated the right way, then they shouldn't be touching any turbo engine. That's not a matter of "We haven't had Skylines for that long here"...
