Hey all driving on the highway today and my turbs went. Drove it 25km home with no boost and upon quick inspection i had blown the front compressor clean off the shaft.

f**k knows if the exhaust wheel is still on ill pull it off tomorrow morning.

Questions I have is before i buy a new turbo and slap it on why would the other one blow.

It was an r34 neo turbo on my rb20 and was running 11-12 psi.

its been blowing smoke lately. There was a small oil leak from the bottom return line (from turbo to block) but checked bolts etc and all was good.

Seems strange to blow just like that without warning.

Could oil through the intake system cause it to blow or would it be more conceivable that the oil in the intake was caused by this turbos seals?

It is very bemusing to me....

Havent been boosting it much like said before only running 11psi.

The oil is the big worry for me engine has been running good just fair bit of oil in intake etc catch can filled up fully after turbo blew.

Trying to chase up a high flow turbo now.

low oil levels in the motor itself, which would be related to a leak... or someone not filling it up enough etc.

many factors. But its only one possibility.

Best way is to get the turbo out, and send it away for inspection so you know what caused it.

Check oil feed line isnt blocked. have you got the compressor wheel? have seen front nut come off and cause wheel failure.

yeah sounds like a good idea.

No point putting on a more expensive turbo only to kill it too.

Am I the only one thinking a bigger problem may come from this?

If the COMPRESSOR wheel has gone, it is surely going to follow the path of the air.. through the cooler and in to the engine.

Lets say it hit the cooler, and some bits went through it and ended up in your engine..

You’re game driving it around with bits in there..

Mine cartridge failed and the comp wheel ate lots of the front housing out, no harm done to my motor :thumbsup:

But i guess it depends on if it totally fell off, how long it ran for, how muhc of the comp wheel/housing is actually missing

if it snapped the shaft you definately have an oil feed issue.
