I have noticed the same thing. If the boost is low, and there is no risk of detonation, and you only give it occasional brief squirts, it will be a lot more responsive with the turbo outlet going straight into the throttle body.

But if it heat soaks, or you really give it heaps, or you tow trailers up hills, a decent intercooler is an absolute must.

On my old R31, i was always intending on running an STI cooler closed up with some alum plate as the basis for a water to air cooler. Mount it straight off the turbo, straight into the throttle body, very stable inlet temps, very short inlet tract.

Would have to run some shielding beneath the cooler to stop heat soak, but with addition of an ice bucket in the boot, may have made a nice setup. Of course the whole setup would weigh about 3 times a good air to air IC, but i imagine throttle response would be great.
