Rim Width Question For The Gurus

Recommended Posts

Can anyone tell me how is the width of a rim is measured/determined.

Is it measured from the total width of the rim from both outer edges of the lip (inner and outer edges), or is it measured from inside the lip?

Reason I ask is, I have just had delivery of a replacement front Super Advan 17x8J +35. This is the exact same spec (well meant to be) as the one its replacing but when I look at the profile of the spokes, it doesn't appear to be the same. The spokes don't come out as far.

When I got the ruler out it appears to be almost a 9inch rim when measured from outer edges but has 17x8 stamped on the inside. Could it be a blunder on the manufactuers behalf?

I'm sure there wasn't 2 variations in spoke design for this wheel but I'm no expert on this.

Hope this makes sense and sorry for the naivety on my behalf.

cheers

the width is most likely the same...u probably got the wrong offset wheel. The offset of a wheel determines how curved in the spokes are for the same wheel. Another factor is the disk of the wheel, whether its low caliper or high disk clearance wheels also determine how the spokes are curved. Hope that makes sense. two identical width wheels of the same model may look different depending on the offsets.

Yeah I understand everything you're saying and this is I'm confused coz everything is identical.

The offset, rim width and size are all identical to the rim I'm replacing, its just the spokes dont come out as much as the ones I already have on the front of the car. Maybe there was 2 different face designs I dunno.

I got the rim from Yahoo actions Japan off a wheel dealer and everything he advertised matches what is on the rim so I now have frown written all my face...just cannot understand whats wrong.

if it is exactly the same model, width and offset, then more than likely its the disk thats different. Chk on the insides of the spoke or on the sticker...it should have O, A or B something like tht...A is for high caliper clearance, O is low....jap wheels are a mystery sometimes...

Crikey its more complex by the minute. Heres some pics I just took with all the info.

1st pics says 96/12

2nd says 17x8J / 35 / L

3rd says SA3R 17-1

Other than these details I'm bamboozled.

    • Hi all,   I have been a member here for years and am back to owning an R35.  It's my car and thought members of the community might enjoy sharing my journey.  I am definitely here to join the conversation.  If sharing this content isn't appropriate or it belongs somewhere else, I am happy to have it deleted or moved...
    • Data looks rock solid? I'm assuming you jabbed the throttle twice OR once? the TPS voltage moves up and down twice, however you've mentioned you did it once.
    • Having not watched the videos, I'm unsure, but this may be better suited to the importing thread?
    • Update on this situation: (Forgot to put in my previous post that I bought another brand new pressure gauge and fuel shows the same 50psi) I've deleted all the aftermarket immobilizers and turbo timer shyt and placed all factory wiring back to normal. The problem is still the same and nothing changed, but atleast it's a bit more tidier under the steering wheel. I've also siphoned out all the old fuel and then poured new batch of BP98 fuel (about 15L) into the tank. Nothing changed. Still the same idle. I also changed out the MAP vac line with a new one and, still the same.  So 2 days ago, I thought fk it. I'll just change out the fuel rail and injectors with another set that I know worked well in my brother's R34 a while back. That other fuel rail has the exact same Xspurt 640cc as what I have right now. So I changed it out to that other fuel rail and injectors (new O-rings) and injector harness. Put everything back together, started the engine, 464906286_1624569924763105_5179888796065901094_n.mp4   and yeah... still the same 50psi and idle problem. 🫠 I can also hear each of injector's solenoids running when I put a screw driver to it and have the other end to my ear. I might get a noid light just to confirm pulsasion but yeah, very strange that both fuel rails and injectors put out 50psi.  31-10-2024.csv I've attached it here. I started recording, then started the engine and let it idle with no throttle, then at the end I applied a little throttle and then stopped recording.    So, now idk. I'm going to see if swapping out the brand new R35 coils to my old splits fires will change anything. 🤷‍♂️
    • Hey mate, nice work on the car. Just a quick note, people generally don't like it when you use the forums to dump and run to advertise your YouTube content. If you're gonna stick around and join in the conversation then great, but if not this might not be the best place for you.
