Heya Guys,

well i finally gave into the fact that at 281 rwhp i might need a new clutch, my old clutch wasnt doing too bad to tell you the truth but i know that i should go by the stuff that I am told and i feel that prevention is better than cure so instead of waiting for my clutch to die i may aswell do it now!

So last night i picked up SLY with the new clutch

I picked up a 9 puck 2600lbs brass button clutch.

The friction point is abnout an inch off the groud which i soooo am not used too plus the actual friction is only about 1cm's worth i nearly stalled it the 1st time i went into gear.

PSI installed it for me and seems like so far they have done a good job even though i will have to take a bit of time to get used to it, i am pretty crap at the moment in 1st gear trying to get it right... is that normal? or lets face it am i just crap with a new clutch?? but in 2nd gear change up to 5th man that thing changes into gear so friginn nice!!!

Now i have read 100's and 1000's of threads identical about clutch stories but though you guys might wanna know as i think i might be the 1st one here to get PSI performance to do it.

All in all I'd say Brett did a real good job but i am going to have to get used to it i think i am pretty sure he said 2600 lbs so it might last me for sometime... i am glad i got it now and not winter... if any of you guys are thinking about getting it in winter you might want to get it now coz i skidded my tyres accidently about 10 time laastnight if it were raining it would have been about 30!

2600 pound? wow... you must be a glutton for punishment :P The 2400 pound plate is the same... I have to rev the car to around 1500-2000rpm and gently let the clutch out to get it to hookup, anything less and I get shudder and the car jerks along... so either way I look like a knob in peak hour traffic. This makes hill starts and rain a pain in the ass. Though not much you can do, as when you increase power you need a better clutch to handle it and without going to the extremes of a osgiken twin plate clutch (at around 2-3k) there isnt much else.

Well I had to get some other stuff done At PSI aswell, from what i have heard a lot of better clutch work and making comes from the Eastern States and not so much locally. so Brett got the clutch form the eastern states for me.

I know Ross has done some fantastic work but trying to get my car ready for show i have had a few hours off work so I am trying to kill as many birds with one stone as i can if i can get 2 or 3 things done at one place at the same time then it works out well for me.

PLus the prices of the 2 were pretty much the same except with Brett one of my plates got completely cleaned up (flywheel maybe???) and it came from the eastern states.

Have you gotten used to it though? or do you hate driving your car in peak hour traffic?

yeah Kym ive heard that aswell but i can tell you it is quite a bit heavier hydrolic or not it is a bit harder to push in and i don't know how it is going to handle when it is on the freeway but MAN gear changes are unbeleivable, with standard clutch i wuld lose sooo many revs between gear change now because of the grip of the clutch no joke hardly any revs are lost! it is great!!

I will see how i go in the next few weeks and i fi am used to it all by then well then i will completely recoomend you to get one, people have said just give it a little while so yeah i will wait a bit... if not maybe still go to PSI and just get a 2200lbs 9 puck.....

Nah this 2600lbs clutch is brass baby! you had the 2500 lbs ceramic? have you blown it? maybe give this one a try? how mcuh each time for you to replace it macka?

Thought my sig needed a change by the way :-)

I wonder if PVA will like my special of the week??:P

Try driving a twin-plate with rotational idle, you guys have no problems compared to me. Once your used to the clutch it's fine, but I managed to destroy a Nismo 4-puck clutch quite easy, so don't think your immune from breaking clutches now.

good stuff.

The auto clutch unit I have is great and if you get good equipment ,like you obviously have, any back yard hero can install the flywheel & clutch assembly (except for getting the stupid ass gearbox back on). I'm sure PSI have done a great job.

281HP ... with the std turbo still?

Yup 281Hp with standard turbo still... don't know how much longer though, am runnin at 12psi for auto salon.

I would list them all now but i still have a few more things to do, so as soon as i have finished i will give all the info and what made what HP.

All of the stuff i have done to my car as been done from info given to me from skyline forums from all members such as yourselves, this forums have been very invaluable and the info has been much appreciated therefire i intend to give as much info back to you all as soon as it's all finished. unfortunately thought it won't be finished by auto salon but it's getting therre...

yeah i was quite surprised it's still running 281 off standard turbo... not much puff left in it i would say, still have ITC to install aswell... 4 months later and still havin probs installing it :-(

Thnaks for the info steve, are theynice and easy to push in? or does every single clutch upgrade no matter what it is is always ging to be harder to push in than the original standard clutch?

I have a twin-plate and it is very easy to push in, much better than the 4-puck I had in for a while. It depends on how heavily sprung the clutch is, a 2600lb clutch is usually quite heavy.

If you get a twin-plate, then get a sprung rather than solid centre clutch, easier to drive:D

    • I mean the other day I had to walk someone through diagnosing why their timing belt was walking off the cam gears. At least one of the issues was a bent tensioner stud. Local mechanics have found runout on the CAS mechanism causing weird failures. I'm also no saint here I've documented some of the things I've had to learn the hard way. Something I discovered recently is that my CA emissions catalytic converters weren't even welded correctly to align the downpipe to the main cat and they tossed the support bracket that goes from the transfer case to the downpipe to support everything there. I spend a lot of time chasing down these decidedly unsexy problems and the net effect is it feels like I never actually get to the original objective (flex fuel, VCAM, oil control, cooling, etc).
    • At times with how you make everything sound, all I imagine Americans doing when they see a gtr is standing there looking at it and bashing it with a gun like how a caveman would with a club and hoping it fixes itself 
    • I think this is just a product of how the US market works for this stuff. Shops are expensive and there's no real way of knowing what kind of results you're going to get, people don't really have the institutional knowledge. I have heard too much at this point to really put faith in anybody "full service" except maybe DSport and they aren't really a full service kind of shop. If you go to the right place I have no doubt they'll get it right for you. Some locals have set it up right but the cost really is nuts and even now they're still fighting issues. And you know I'm a crazy person who thinks things like twin scroll, relatively short low-mount cast headers, PCV recirc to intake, recirculating BOV, right-sized for ~400 whp, MAF load, validating all of that to a standard comparable to OEM test programs, etc are relevant. For what it's worth, multiple local owners at this point have been stuck in a perpetual cycle of blowing a motor -> getting someone to rebuild it -> some missed detail causes the bearings to wipe and spin just outside of break-in mileage or drop valves or some other catastrophe -> cycle repeats. I usually only find out about this because I'm perpetually helping random friends with diagnosing car troubles, Skyline or otherwise. The single turbo stuff if I'm honest is mostly secondary, it just doesn't seem to achieve the numbers in the ~2000-3000 rpm region that I would expect given the results I've seen here or in Motive's videos. I don't really know what we're missing here in the US to be causing this. Lots of people like to emphasize the necessity of finishing the project first and foremost, but I'm not made of money and I can't afford to be trashing a 15k+ USD engine build with any regularity. Or spending my relatively limited garage time these days unable to triangulate problems because too much was changed all at once. Also, even if it isn't a catastrophic failure I would consider spending the cost of single turbo conversion with nothing to show for it to be pretty bad. 
    • The water pump is know to leak as well. So if the coolant is low checking that first as well as hoses. 
    • Reading your posts Josh, sometimes I feel like I've gone in a time machine back to the 90's when everyone was doe-eyed and figuring things out for the first time.  I've lost track of how many single turbo GTR's I've seen on track that haven't burnt down lol. Everything has been figured out a long time ago. These things are at the point now where its essentially turn-key to go single turbo.
