What The Hell Is This Noise

Hey there, when i start my car up makes this high pitched noise then is goes away after a few seconds. use to do this when it was just cold now its doing it every start up. i reckon it could be the fan belt since that broke off a while ago from that noise, now with the new fan belt the noise was gone for a few weeks and now its back again, any idea what it is?? i got a R32 GTS-t

Almost 100% that it is belt slip flash. Check that all the belts are set to the correct tension and also check for any leaks around the belts as a bit of water/coolant can also cause the belts to slip.

how do i know the tension

tighten it up till it snaps, then back it off half a turn.

it should be firm, but still have about 1cm movement in total, i think. so if you push on the belt it should move about 5mm.

They have the belt tension details in the cars hand book. I have one but it's for an R33 so not much help to you.

If someone has the specs for R32, please post them up.

belt tensions are usually the same on any car. the only time it may vary is if it is a single belt system like on a commodore.

Also the best time to check the tension is when the engine is cold. When the the belts warm up they constrict a bit and will then fell tighter than they actually are.

im pretty sure most matreials expand with heat. either that or i should've failed material science.

it doesnt matter when you check it, just make sure you've got that 1cm of play.
