Driver Training/testing.

Well this morning a tragic incident occurred in the Doveton area where a young person was killed in a car accident after a police pursuit of a speeding driver.

“The pursuit was terminated a short time later as the car travelled along Power Road, but the car struck a power pole at the corner of Power and Kidds roads in Doveton, he said.” “quoted from ninemsn.com.au”

Police have now decided that Driver training and testing is possibly too easy and more intensive testing and training should be required and implemented before drivers are aloud to get their licence...

After the hundreds (slight exaggeration) of threads started on sau saying the only way to reduce problems on our roads is education. And now they are finally looking into it... Might have taken a while to come into effect or be suggested. I hope they follow through and that extra training and testing does keep our roads allot safer..

i agree that education is needed, definitely. but as soon as they bring that in and something still goes wrong they are either going to say its useless or something more needs to be done.

It always takes an accident or a death for something to change for the better. In the governments eyes though it takes an excessive amount of accidents and deaths before they wake up and realise something needs to be done.

I dont know if other people agree with me on this and i havent done it myself yet (but am very keen on doing it) but i think that when they get their P's the government should reward them by paying for them to do a defensive driver course (that so wont happen though).

I also agree with Matt that the tests should be harder and longer. When i got my license in 2003 it was easy as, just drive here there, park, go back to Vic roads and your done. I feel that people on their L's should b put into difficult situations with a licensed instructor and get a feel for what it is like for when they come across it later on down the track when they have their license.

I dont know if anyone feels the same way as i do but thats my 2 cents worth

Its is sad that it is always after the event that measures are taken.

I fully support driver training. Every time I am behind the wheel I am reminded of why. And yes, sometimes it *is* me af fault.

Is there any SAU could help? As in forum posts are hardly a political motivation (if it was a blog, however...).

Perhaps SAU VIC should send in a petition for driver training to a few MP's. I know it sounds mercenary to use this event, but perhaps we can help stop it from happening again.

id be in for that but im in qld

ive already done 2 courses, beginner and advanced, i didnt have to do the intermediate.

i also dun a level one racing course which was alot of fun. totally for the track tho. theres no way you could push a car that hard on standard streets.

anyway, i agree that p platers should be made to do these courses, my skool organised a course for us, that was the beginner course, then i went on my own accord to do the advanced. and the racing level 1, which is just basic racing. anyway i definately agree, made me a much safer driver and i will say has got me outta alot of bad situations on instint and quick reacting that i wouldnt have dun if i was freash to the wheel.

i don't know if you guys don't know this but if you're a hoon, YOU'RE A HOON.

people know how to drive it's not like they get their Ps for driving into a pole. sure they'll do well on this training thingo but let's not forget, if you're a hoon, the second you get on the road....the hooning beggings coz i dunno if its just me but i can't see how this will turn a hoon into a decent driver :

when i went through at skool, i knew half the skool were crazy in their cars, i knew they would be even more crazy once they completed this DD course.

so i waited at the end of the day before i left the skool. and whatta u know, half of em raced outta there like they were peter brock.

You're assuming everyone who has an accident on their P's is a hoon. Most accidents involving P platers are as a result of low driving experience and education - speeding, driving whilst drunk, not paying attention, getting distracted, going too fast for the conditions eg. in the wet.

There are a lot of people out there that aren't hoons who just need more practice. I've done the Advanced and Defensive Driving course with Driver dynamics and it was awesome - learned a lot and IMHO made we a better driver.

i got my license in SA, it's much easier there than here. no manual/auto license either. i was amazed at how easy it was. 5 lessons to complete the log book in an auto and a final test of about 30 mins driving, parking, etc and i had my P's. at least in Vic there's a requirement to log a certain amount of hours first.

Also after completing a (training thingo) Defencive Driving Course if that was to help someone avoid

that pole i think that would have been a good course to take.As for turning a Hoon in to a decent driver.
