What about VL turbo's? Are they illegal to drive?

I dare say most coppers don't really take much notice/know. Where I am anyways. There are millions of P platers driving around R33 GTST's. I have seen plenty in Melbourne also. Probably be a bit of bad luck to actually get done for it. If you have any stories, please post them

Work it out your allowed 125kw per tonne of car. and it goes of factory figures.

Weather or not you get done for it...who knows what it depends on.....cops descretion? I have a friend who has been pulled over an uncountable number of times in his TT soarer and has been done for just about everything in the book except driving a high powered vehicle...

and with the new laws coming in soon about p platers spending a total of 4 yrs on p's n making it like NSW, i dont think many cops will let the p platers off with as much stuff as they have done in the past.

From what i have gathered the power to weight ratio will no longer exist for the p platers and will be a strict case or no V8's or turbo's of any state.

I reckon about one in three R33 turbo's I see are on P plates, so obviously the police don't take TOO much notice.

I think they more target black listed cars/the more powerful ones 300Kw HSV's etc. I would have no reservations whatsoever driving a 33GTST or a soarer etc. but I am a little more cautious when I drive my GTR......still as I said before I think it come down to the discretion of the cop on the day.

Im not sure if they would still stand or not. We will have to wait and see what the answer to that will be.

I had 1 yr left when i first got my R33. I only got pulled up once and they never looked under my bonnet, asked me if it was turbo, nothing. But i would say it all depends what you are doing when you get pulled up,what area you are in and i hate to say this but in some cirumstances what sex you are and what the cop is like.

i thought it was 122kw/tonne

man seriously, if you want the car, just get it, i've been pulled over while driving my cousin's old 300+kw@wheels vy hsv and the officer didn't even ask about the car. there are plenty of p-platers who drive r33 gtst's and i know there are a few here aswell. a guy at work has had his r33 gtst since he was 18, he's 22 now and NEVER been hassled about it, although he has been pulled over many times.

I have an r33 gtst and got done for driving a "high powered vehicle" a few weeks back. I was cruising along the freeway when i got pulled over. Been pulled over before but just for a random breath test. Its the TMU you have to look out for. They even looked under the hood. The officer told me that i can still drive my car but run the risk of getting another fine.

What was the fine? and did u lose ne points?

I can deal with a fine every now and then but Points!!...Outrageous!!

that law only affects new p platers, not ones who are already on P's jax.

if you read legislation it IS supposed to incur points and a fine, however every copper knows the offence as a "breach of lisence conditions" whic only falls as a $110 fine and no demerit points....

take a risk... i did and the risk failed on me... however other are luckier

if you speed will you get caught? its the same answer... most of the time, no... but eventually... well i'll let you be the judge of that lol

my rego sticker says my s2 r33 weighs 1600kg right on the mark for a p plater to drive. only found this out as my brother got done in his s1 r33 for power to weight 1450kg. it doesnt apply to me as i'm 25 but have a look around you might get lucky.

finally getting my car back this week after 6 months off the road YAY! :D

    • So the clockspring is responsible for the indicators cancelling on their own? I thought that was the function of that white thing in the center (any idea what it's called?)
    • Can you log IAT? Whilst WTA coolers have their place, doing any sort of sustained run is not one of them There are fixes that slow down the heat soak, like ice boxes, which don't last that long, and interchillers, which are fairly expensive, up grades to the WTA cooling radiator, which may require a bigger pump, and upgrades to the reservoir size,  and upgrades to the cooling fans, but, it all still heat soaks, and takes ages to come down in hot weather  For a turbo, that isn't locked into WTA like my PD blower is, can you not possibly swap to a nice air to air intercooler????, it would be better for sustained runs then, and have alot less things that could go wrong in my opinion
    • So, the other thing I've sorted is a baseline dyno run up at Unigroup's new location. The auto trans was a little unco-operative by both shifting down when the throttle was floored on the dyno (so Mark had to ramp it up more slowly than in a manual) and also by shifting up at 6,000 even in sports mode instead of the indicated redline of 7,000 Still, on a hot day it made 240rwkw at 16psi which seems about right for 300kw (400hp) through an auto at the wheels.  The shape of the curve is not quite right because it was not full throttle to about 4,500 to stop it kicking down, but until I can get a tune on the auto trans control this was the best we could do.....full boost will be well below 5,000 once that is sorted, I'll get some data logs when I can to confirm For comparison, the R32 made 255 at 12psi (at 4,500) on the same dyno with tune, n1 turbos, cam gears, big exhaust but otherwise all standard so the v37 is likely a little better out of the box. One thing that is very clear is that the standard water to air intercoolers are not up to sustained use at full throttle in warm ambient temps. After about 5 runs (so only a few minutes full throttle), it was pulling boost and timing and dropping 10-15% power. Unfortunately I didn't get that printout and the Unigroup guys are away at the moment, will try and get hold of it on their return. So, looks like a healthy engine to start modifying and the only real area of concern is the w2a heat exchangers which the aftermarket has plenty of solutions for
    • I maintain it actually looked really nice in person. So much so that I thought "No, this is illegal" but there it was, clear as day. I think we can easily call the wing and wheels/height to be transformative. Not saying it's better than the GR Whatever, or the 86, or the WRX STI or anything of that sort (the internet says it all bolts up so you can buy best of all worlds?) but it's still at least a thing and not nearly AS bad as people say.
    • That's less offensive than the previous gen.....except for all that ugly black tupperware around the edges. Blerck!
