does anyone have a gates racing belt fitted to there skyline? I have one fitted to my car (did it yesterday). The gates belt is noisey on idle and can be intermitent. Does anyone know wtf is going on? or is it best to stick to nissan genuine parts?

i recently got the gates timing belt fitted. mine was making a grinding noise. freaked me out. but then i took it back and got the idiot who did it to loosen it. he obviously tensioned it too tight. there's no noise now.

but i've heard that the gates can sometimes be noisy. if urs is making a grinding, unhealthy murmur type of sound, get it re tensioned. if its a whistling, then i think that's ok.

yeah mate should sound exactly the same as a normal one. check it is not overtensioned.

what about the nismo belts? with an apexi cam gear? mine whines heaps!

is weird depending on the matieral and also the tension

you can gt some pretty funky sounds from belts, the power

enterprise in kevlar mix and is noisey as hel but still very cool.

All belts will stretch over time, a little tighter should not harm anything.

recently had skyline serviced 100k service, timing belt changed etc

Theres a whistling noise comming from where the timing belt is, only when car is warm or hot, so after a drive ie, is that anything to be worried about ?

Worst case senario:

If it sounds like a metalic whistle (ie:bearings) ask you mechanic if they changed the idler bearings. If not this is a big issue and must be done. If the bearings are worn they will eventally seize, break the belt then bye-bye engine

most people say that a 90 degree (1/4) twist of the belt after tentioning is a good rule of thumb to follow in order to determine correct belt tention. we have pulled this dam thing apart twice now and second time around the whine has decreced but is still intermitent.
