:) WHY?

An aftermarket ecu does wonders to a std engine and turbo set-up.

My personal order:

- exhaust

- fmic

- boost increase

- ecu

- fuel pump, injectors, afm, turbo (most expensive step)

- if making over 220rwkw, replace std airbox with a CAI system

- cams (optional)

- head porting (optional)

- rebuild bottom end (once excessive blow-by occurs)

The above is just power progression list. Before the turbo make sure you upgrade clutch, BRAKES (good pads, slotted rotors, TOP SHELF FLUID!), suspension (not just coil overs), wheels and tyres. These will make your car drive faster and safer, and allow you to have a whole lot more fun in a controlled manner. Big power without these mods will NOT give you a fast car, unless you only want to drive in a straight line :)

Just my 2c

You cannot remap R34 ECUs. So just save and get a power-FC.

Only R32 GTSt ecu's can be remapped.

Um I think they can given that Dr. Drift said he could. There are also options like the biki rom that allows u to remap via USB and the software (cheaper than power FC) and the Grid daughter boards.

But yes, I think Power FC is the safest option in that its commonly tuned.

my 2 cents follows.

any ecu is remappable, well almost any. it just comes down to how much its going to cost. dr drift could remap your microwave if you like. r32 is easy remap. r33 is expensive remap. r34 is easy (apparently) remap. by expensive its that the cpu is a burn once and the board doesnt support a reburnable chip so you have to make the ecu boot from some other cpu on an expansion board (im pretty sure thats right) and then burn once a map.

in the case of the r33 its just easier and cheaper to get a powerfc. a remap for an r33 gtst could end up costing you 1200 odd easily. so its not worth it.

it doesnt matter what ecu you have, if you have motec, autronic, apexi, stocker, hell a nintendo gameboy. sure each has their own quirks and bugs and featureset but they all achieve the same goal. it really comes down to how well its tuned. if you were to compare a pfc tuned by XYZ workshop for $500 then compare it to an r32 remap by dr drift. if the remap has more load points adjusted (tuned) then it will be better, perform better and be a better car to drive. it all comes down to the tune. its fine to have XYZ ecu but if its not tuned accordingly then its pointless

- Full knock sensor feedback

- Rapid and accurate closed loop feedback control (good mileage)

- Virtually Undetectable

- Less Expensive than PFC

- Proven to Pass EPA Test (vic) even with bigger turbo's and injectors etc

- Can be returned to standard in under 5 mins

Questions then:

1) how does the tune cope with changing weather conditions, ie. if tuned in winter, is a retuned needed for summer? Or are conditions irrelevant?

2) If we need to return it to standard, does that involve a remap by you or is this something we can easily do?

3) Why does your tune pass EPA and a PFC tune not if they were to produce the same power on the same car?

I would like to put forward an alternative view;

1. Retains Full Diagnostics through Consult Interface

But I find the Commander display a better diagnostic tool, with multiple views. Plus I don’t have to buy a Consult reader and/or display

2. Retains Full Datalogging through Consult Interface

So does PFC with Datalogit

3. Full knock sensor feedback

Commander shows knock levels on the display in real time, plus it has adjustable dash light flash warning levels

4. Rapid and accurate closed loop feedback control (good mileage)

So does the PFC

5. Virtually Undetectable

I guess if someone wants to go to the trouble of pulling the kick panel off and seeing a PFC they will just as likely spend 2 minutes more and check for the chipped ECU

6. Less Expensive than PFC

Only the first time it needs tuning, every time thereafter the PFC is cheaper. Plus you have a choice of tuners with a PFC.

7. Proven to Pass EPA Test (vic) even with bigger turbo's and injectors etc

I have had 4 cars pass NSW EPA with PFC’s, it’s all in the tuning, not the hardware.

8. Can be returned to standard in under 5 mins

Swapping from PFC to standard ECU takes about the same. Plus you can sell the PFC for almost what you paid for it, try that with a chip. PFC’s are THE most popular ECU for Skylines, there is always a market for them.

If I had an R34GTT auto the good Dr would be getting a call, but for a manual, a PFC is my choice.

1 - Same as a Power FC (but better), the way a hotwire AFM works is an output based on air temp x air flow = air mass (hence the correct name Mass Air Flow Meter)

2 - To return to standard just move one small jumper connection inside ECU, to remove board is a bit harder.

3 - EPA (vic) does closed loop testing through the factory consult port, which still works with remap but not with power fc or any other aftermarket ecu.

where can i get my r34 gtt ecu remapped lol?im here in sydney

Sydneykid - some valid points, apart from the tuning costs, I charge the same regardless of ecu. You also mentioned not having to buy a consult reader (AUD$130) but then mention you need a Dataloggit (AUD$465), which even then cannot do some functions such as power balance testing (dropping out one cylinder at a time), simulate water temp corrections, selectable AAC position, all of which are useless as far as a driving point of view goes, but with some of these cars getting past 15 years old now it makes diagnostics and testing so much easier. We are also now selling real time tuning packages to several workshops, all over the country, which chould be up on line in a matter of months...

I guess the other thing is, it is a pain to get the car retuned if there are more mods done to the car, we'd have to wait for you to come to Sydney again.

Quite frankly, if it did need a retune, I would only want you to work on it as opposed to some other workshop who is still green to the idea of ECu tuning. Whereas there are a few reputable workshops who Id trust and go to in order to get a PFC retuned.

A little off topic here sorry but have you got any further in regards to remapping a R33 Sam? In you opinion will it ever be a cost effective option? or are we better off with the PFC
