Tinting Front Windows...

i was going to say the fronts are already somewhat tinted, hence i find it fine in summer

on another note, someones done it here with an S2... looked boring IMO, nothing out of the ordinary anymore and to me stagea is all about being unique

funny this thread popped up, my uncle is a window tinter here in perth and I was having a chat to him about this on the weekend.

he was saying that people (local car manufactures) are kicking up a stink because certain cars coming in from jap are being complied with darker than legal rear windows. they want that to stop (i dont know if or when this will be happening)

he has done a few cars now and has had no dramas matching the windows so if your in perth and want tint shoot me a pm and i'll leave u his contact details

his name is Peter Garden im sure a few wa members might know his name (been doing it for 30 odd years...)

with less than 350 stageas in the country and like a billion commodores, i really dont get it?

grey imports make up about MAYBE 1% of the car market, if that i reckon and most of them have just regular tint/windows. So its maybe 0.01% that have darker than legal tint???

yes more than aware that its the glass.. been around for years and years!

he said it was the window tiniting association that sent him the details about what was goin on, but like i said he couldnt care less... theres enough work out there to start having to worrie about the occasional stagea or evo or v35 that comes in that he might loose a few bucks cos he only has to do 2 windows....

Sounds about right. Can get a falcooon done all 5 windows for $320 here in Perth.

you can have it as dark as you want from the B-pillars back, hey... cos you can fold the seats down, its a cargo area. basically same class as the back of a tradies mitsubishi express van, and limos.

Im getting mine tinted tomorrow, two front sides and the tailgate, all matched to the rear sides. will post photos of before and after.

$110 all round.

Ok just to set a few things straight for StageaGirl and other Perth people, I work with my brother Trent at TKO Tinting in Victoria Park:

- 35% is the darkest tint you can have on all the windows except the front windscreen.

- NO ONE can match the '5 Year Coat' tinted glass from Nissan, Toyota, Mitsubishi etc... you can get close but it won't be exact. Reason being that the tinted glass starts off as a clear, and the straight black tinted particles are added to it during the process. So in effect the tinted glass is Clear + Black (glass). The front windows on the other hand have a green UV reducing finish to them, so adding dark tint on top of it means it's clear/green (glass) + Black (film) = the colours are different.

Also, to match the % of the glass to the rear windows with tint, the film still looks too light in comparison. The tinted glass looks deceptive in that it looks darker than what the digital light meter tells you.

- Jeff Ash from C-Red gets all his imports done through us, and he's given up trying to match the tint to the tinted glass. We've also done Stageas (one just 2 weeks ago) with the same result.

- All 5 windows on a Falcon starts at $245 at TKO...

What are the standard Stagea front/side windows?

Are they the same as the rear/tailgate window?

I found the info on the tinting front to rear very interesting. The tricky question, how close is the front to rear match if you try really hard? Is it daylight (pun intended) difference? Or is it more like, in certain light conditions you can JUST notice it?

I assume the rear/tailgate window isn’t such of a matching problem as it is “around the corner” and you don’t see it with the other windows.

You certainly can mate I just put some numbers into your quote to make it easier to understand, hope you don't mind me editing your post

1) The tinted glass on the Stageas rear/side windows comes up at about 27% on the digital meter. It's too dark for WA and Victoria, not sure about NSW/QLD.

2) The standard (non-tinted glass) front/side windows come up at about 65 - 70%. To match it to the rear windows % wise, you'd need to use a 30 - 35% film, but like I mentioned earlier, the rear tinted glass looks deceptively darker than the front windows when tinted to the same %.

3) The rear tailgate window is tempered glass (same as the front/sides) but I can't measure back windows the meter can't slip over the glass because of the metal around the tailgate. I'm assuming the % is exactly the same.

4) I would say it's more like certain light conditions will make you notice the difference slightly or noticably depending on the person. We have tried to tinit-match Jeff Ash's 2003 V35 350GT coupe, and he's brought it back twice already. He notices it, but then again he is a bit a a picky guy with the J-cars... lol As I said before, because of the different techniques used to make the tinted glass (Nissan calls it '5 year coat' - apparently it holds it's darkness that long before fading starts) theres just no way to match it properly unless a window film manufacturer specifically produces a tint that can cancel out the green UV coating on the front windows.

So it’s 4 years past its use by date. Still looks pretty dark, so I guess it looses its reflectivity (heat and light) but not its colour. Or is the “5 year coat” typical Nissan conservatism and it will last for 25 years?

We tried everything to get the front door windows to look the same, even laying a sheet of 20% film over the front window to cut the extra light coming in from the front... but still you get that green 'tinge' with the front windows.

Yeah the 5 year coat is typical Nissan under statement I'd say, the rate that the tinted glass fades would be extremely slow.

Done. $110 for front two and tailgate. match is the right darkness, but yes the colour is slightly greenish, as opposed to matt black. Charlie and tint-mart does have experience with matching it, also being a spraypainter by trade.

You know how when mixing paint you can cancel out colour tinges? well, by using a slightly coloured tint, you can actually cancel out the green/add to the green (depending on how you look at it) to make it black. same as with painting a car, how a hint of silver in the mix will cancel out gold.

we are going to try it out over a few weeks, see how we go.

Yeah I still rather the VIP look with the front sides clear. And the rear, well I reverse mine a lot, (mainly not to hit the front bar because it is so low), and at night it is hard enough reversing without a reverse light, it would make things even tougher with the dark tint on it.

Although it does look alright, but I prefer the way it is.

actually a major reason for getting it done, or catalyst rather, is i sprinted out the other night, pissing down rain, after stumbling around to find my keys in the dark at 2am, to wind my freaking windows up before the rain destroyed my interior.

It wasnt until id opened the door and turn the key to 'on', that i realised they were already up. Just i couldnt see the bastards.
