Hey guys.

Just wondering if anyone is running either of these garrett turbos on there gtrs?

How do they perform ?

Does the larger GT2860R- 7s have issues with shuffle down low and how responsive are they? e.g when do they start pulling from and when do they get onto full boost ,say 1.4 - 1.6 bar.

Here is where im at,I have an engine thats built for a solid 700hp with fueling to match,running power fc as my computor.

My goal is high 300kws or even low 400kws at the hubs (hub dyno) would these turbos do this?Iv read that the GT2860R - 5s are good for 360hp apeice with almost factory response in spool rate and the GT2860R- 7s are rated to 400hp each , now thats on paper but what are you guys getting with these tubbies? A single is not an option for me at this stage and I want to keep with bolt on low mounts.

Any help will be greatly apreciated

The 707160-5 in a pair combination is good for 700hp at all fours as proven to me on a dyno. Brisbane tuning and turbo centre.

The -7 will come one boost slightly earlier and sharper. The -5 has a smooth deceptive power curve.

The -7 is basically just the N1 whereas the -5 is an upgrade to that turbo. People who I have sold these -5's to have been wrapped in their performance. Most of whom had come from such turbos as the -7 already.

would love to know what else is done to this car....because that figure sounds a bit too high for those turbos. they're only rated at 350hp so how you can get 700awhp out of them would make for an interesting read.

Garrett publish the compressor & turbine maps for these things (as with most of their product). Have a look at www.turbobygarrett.com under the part numbers. You can quite reasonably relate airflow to engine hp. This is actually what people are dong when the quote a 350hp turbo or whatever. Anyway, have a look.

I'm guessing these -5s are on RB26, 700 @ all 4 WOW; what are the specs??? I thought somewhere around the mid to low 500s at the wheels was about it.

I have -5s on my 89 R and they are great, they really start pulling hard at around 4K. I'm making 412rwhp on an internally standard combo...an excellent purchase

And as Steve _gts4 has rightfully pointed out the -5 is in fact the bigger of the two

I got my info from here http://www.turbos.co.nz/garretttake2.html but it seems they have the write up on each one round the wrong way

    • You ask for things. You specifically state you want responsiveness. A link was provided for a far superior, more responsive option. Find a MX5 workshop that will install it for you. Maybe MX5 Mania will throw on the Fab9 kit. It seems they want to charge almost 14K installed for their kit, so if they charge you $6K to install the FAB9 kit then you'll be ahead? Though really, the 2.5 with a 2860 running low boost will more or less feel as good as anything else. It's a lot of displacement and a small turbo. Think of a more modern RB26 with one stock turbo :p TBH, truth be told I've been driving my own car, and use about 50% throttle at most for 99.9% of the time. Mr Bogan is likely similar so this is all going to be semantics for the use case he actually has. (He'll be happy with anything relative to now) However, the EFR is hands down far superior in this use case. You really, really, really, really do notice it over the Garrett or equivalent.

    • Gents, it will be getting the MX5 Mania kit and the 2.5 will be staying where it is My query was about the 0.64 or the 0.86, whilst the 0.64 might spool a bit faster, would the 0.86 be better IRT EGT and mechanical sympathy, with only a small difference in spool And as I assume I won't need alot of boost to get to 200kw, probably around 10 psi, and with max rpm at 6500, would high EGT even really be a issue with a 0.64 I'm heading into MX5 Mania at the end of Jan to discuss the install, so any info is welcome prior to that Basically have a chat and book a time so they can throw on the turbo kit, and fit a oil cooler with a thermostat, drive in drive out of course  In other news: just finished cleaning the car inside and out, it's now all ready to get covered in bugs and dirt driving to Goulburn tomorrow to lunch,  and go for a stroll along woolondilly River with the daughter and her boy, and of course, visit my grandcats and my new grandpuppy 
    • Sounds like it has an actual problem with mode select doors, or something.
    • Hope your all having a mean Xmas! If anyone happens to know any trick to using the insanely complex climate control system, I cannot get it to not be on dual zone no matter how many times I deselect it (will say it's not but both vents blow different temps). Also one side is always hot, one always cold 🤷
