Looks like the mutual mastubation by the Australian journos will continue with actual test-drives of the VE to start this week.. i've given up on Drive, Wheels, Motor...

These publications have just been going downhill. Every edition now looks like a Holden sponsored orgy.

i think the journo's are on payroll

i wonder if they'll point out how the Alloytech was released in the VZ (which is just a VY with a new engine) rather than being saved for the VE because they wanted to test the technology to iron out the bugs so the VE wouldnt be a disaster if they got something wrong, it's going to be exported after all :P

Using the (gullible) car buying public of australia as a substitute to correctly testing engines. Drive on Australia.

I think ur missing the point. When he said technology he just meant the new Alloytec engine introduced in the VZ that is now in the VE.

Well the car is a big step over the previous VZ commo, you have to give them that at least. But I agree the amount of suck up trash the mags are all talking about is beyond belief, like Holden have reinvented the wheel or something.

well its a revolution for holden... and thats what everyone buys, so its a big thing for alot of people. not saying its the best car, but it should be pretty damn good to the general public. and why is everyone trash talking em, im not sure, but im guessing they would be a damn nice car to drive...

dont take this the rong way, im not baggin skylines here, but spending alot of time in friends skylines, namely R34 GTt (as opposed to the EA falcons, VN commodores n stuff im ususally in), the 34 is god like, its a really nice car, but then i given a ride in an MDX the other day, and you really begin to see how basic these things (skylines) really are. obviously they have the performance, but thats not what its all about, again for joe public.... and thats what its about for companies like holden, mass sales.

commence flaming!

PS - and its not just holden that builds cars for joe public, but also wheels/motor that review them, for joe public

Har!

I dunno, current conditions I can see this commo going exactly the same way the P76 went. Great V8 engine for the time, pretty good build quality, lots of room... fuel prices that went through the roof. Leyland hit rock bottom, pulled out a backhoe and started digging.

Wheels Magazine if I remember correctly liked the P76 enough too give it car of the year back in 1973 too.

Least Holden got themselves a nice big blimp too advertise it on.

Which can be either indicative of the car itself or its potential too cause something spectacular when it crashes economically...

Just depends on your level of cynicism really :P

Its a good Australian-designed car. Its not Motor, Drive, etc's fault we live in an automotive backwater when it comes to the local industry or that as an Australian publication they have an implicit role in supporting the locals.

Basic? Holden's Alloytech is only just catching up to the RB.

Slap a Holden badge on a bunch of Lada's and I bet motor and drive etc will re-commence the same sort of orgies that have already begun stating how it's a revolutionary vehicle. Point is they always fail to recognise The technology's 10 years old.

I think we need to stop comparing everything to skylines. At the end of the day it doesnt matter if you like holdens or not we should be proud that we have a car that is worthy of exporting overseas. The yanks and English seem to love them and Ihear the HSV's have travelled as far as Japan, so its like the old saying different horses for different courses.

Chris

i think its fine to compare them to skylines ....

i was commodore until the vn where i went back to Vl (nissan) in disgust...

Holden have lost there way ...Ford seem to have taken it :P

I am so disinterested in holden Commodore now that i would'nt even know if their engines have overhead cams YET! haha :)

Keep trying to catch up you Dopey Lion

Oh and remember skylines were kicked out of racing so these car companies could have theie meat heads back winning

I think its funny that everone keeps saying "oh but its a massive leap for holden" When in fact that is the fundimental problem. They've lep't foward to 10 years ago. Any company anywhere else in the world (USA aside)would probably have gone belly up by now due to the primitive nature of these filthy specimens when comparing them to other equivelant vehicles. Vehicle's in other countries have always been years ahead of Holden, it's just that the Australian government prices them out of the same market as the commodore by putting an import/luxury tax on them (BMW for example).

Well done Holden, you've caught up to 1996.

Nice myth going around ey? :P

The real story I believe, correct me if I'm wrong, is that Group A racing was costing too much so they stopped, simple as that! I admit your myth does sound good but... :)

Actually I beleive Holden & Ford Australia put their heads together and wrote a formal letter the to ATC stating that they were unable to produce a competivie 4/6cyl turbo motor and that they were going to seek other forms of motorsport such as NASCAR. In which case they changed the rules in their favour.

Atleast that's what I read in the Sky is the Limit pdf.

If you want a rumour worth spreading start telling people the ATC changed the rules to max 2 valves per cylender and OHC shafts were banned lol.

a few months back holden had to lay off 1/3 of their workers because the BA falcon was kicking holden's butt in sales.

GM in the states has taken legal action to stop from going into receivership. that was part of the reason why they gave oprah a heap of pontiacs to give to the audience, to try to boost sales.

ford has just pulled its finger out, and holden is going down the tube. and holden has made some big mistakes. holden had to do a recall on the vz commodores because they kept throwing harmonic balancers, the stopped making the crewman with the v8 cause they were bending in the middle.

ford has just brought out the turbo terrietry (spelling), which i reakon would be good fun to burn off lancers at the lights. (spend a little bit of money on a flashtune ecu and an exhaust and you've got over 300kw at the fly)

    • It might be fine. I was just saying that I wouldn't trust it without testing it.
    • Traction wasn't bad, l couldn't give it everything off the line but was able to go WOT about half a second after rolling - good for NZ drag strips.   Like one run I did a 1.96 60ft and pretty sure I was on for a 12.4 but lifted early as I was on a 12.5 dial in, and still won haha
    • Nice one! I was going to take mine down to SMSP drags one Weds night. I'd love to compare it with my GTR which did a 12.3. The bum-dyno in the 335i says its quicker.   How was the traction @Lithium?
    • AFAIK I've seen other people recommend using the back of the balance tube as well. Andre Simon from HPA at least. I can't imagine it being that far off from ideal even if it was only used to drive a boost gauge from the factory.
    • Hi All, New member here, I've joined to help my son with an issue that is truly doing our heads in. I'll start with a bit of an overview. Chris carried out some modifications to the engine to try and extract just a little extra power out of the motor and make it a bit more efficient. Previous to this work, the car already had an upgraded exhaust, increased boost up to 14psi, modified standard turbo to metal impellers and slightly oversized, upgraded fuel pump, been dyno-tuned at JEM, and some other bits n bobs like coil packs etc. Before the current mods it was making 236rwkw at 14psi but after the new mods it now makes 209rwkw at 14psi. The work he carried out is as follows, timing belt service, water pump replacement, return to sump radium catch can, had oem head rebuilt and machined 0.2mm, fitted Athena cut ring head gasket 1.2mm thick, arp 2000 head studs, added rear prp head drain, added an external wastegate 40mm turbosmart welded off the stock manifold and plumbed back into a 3in dump. The car has been on the dyno and apparently the ignition is working, fuel flow and fuel pressure is fine, injectors are fine, spark plugs are working fine, Maf is working, O2 sensor is working, TPs sensor is working, VCT is working, CAS is working, boost leak test showed no boost leaks, compression test first crank cold 135psi and got to 150psi across all cylinders once cranking, timing is confirmed at tdc with a dial gauge and the cam dots line up, no blockages in intercoolerm throttle body or pre-turbo intake, no blockages in exhaust, cat conveter or down pipe, turbo looks fine and spins and wastegate looks fine and is new. Soz for all the detail but after all this, it has been in 3 times for dyno and each time comes back stating it's not going to make power. After the first (or second, can't remember now) trip to dyno we did find the timing out by one tooth and this improved things, but it is still well down. Does anyone have any ideas?  Any replies much appreciated as we're just not sure of which direction to take this. Regards Rob (Chris's Dad).
